It depends on what you describe as "time stamping", but the big
difference
between SDII and AIF/WAV is that AIF/WAV just contain audiodata with a
header indicating frequency etc, and that an SDII file includes
information about the segments the file consists of, and where in the song
these segments are used if they are.
Suppose you record a whole vocal track in one sequencer app, then cut it
into pieces (intro, chorus, some verses), and delete the silent bits
between them. When you export this recording as an AIF file to another
app, you'll just have the one big recording you started with. Export it as
an SDII, and it will be exported including all cut&delete information.
I really wish Cubase Audio on the Atari supported this format, it was a
nasty job re-cutting and repositioning all my recordings when I had to
transfer them to Logic on my Mac after my Falcon died. :/ So yes, there is
a compelling reason to use SDII. ;)
