Subject: Logic Hard Crashing/Freezing. Help Needed Please.
Message #165853
Hello all. First I would like to apologize in advance for the long question. I simply want to be as thorough as possible in describing the situation I am having so as to help you help me try to figure out what the heck is happening/going on w/my system. I have a G4 running Logic 6.4.2 on OS 10.3.3. I am getting some SERIOUS hard crashes while doing relatively little in the app. Being a brand spanking new Logic user, I am presently going through the "Logic 6 Apple Pro Training Series" tutorial book by Martin Sitter and Robert Brock. I have the sequence loaded in from the CD which came with the manual. It is a simple sequence which has four audio objects and three midi objects with no DSPs activated. Sometimes the computer freezes while still allowing mouse movement - but nothing else. I have to, of course, shut off the computer and restart. More often than not, however, it simply HARD freezes and the entire computer is at a stand still. At times I have gotten the "restart your computer" message (the one that comes on in multiple languages). At times not. Sometimes these freezes occur when the app is attempting to run through what I imagine is this insanely easy and non-CPU intensive sequence . . . and sometimes the app freezes the entire computer without my doing anything at all - just while I'm sitting there reading the manual . . . the app just freezes up. I also have Final Cut Pro HD installed in my system. I have a tech support associate that described what is happening as a possible/likely "kernel panic" and mentioned that there may be some conflict between Logic and FCP. He suggested setting up two individual users for each app. Before I do that, however, I really am interested in seeing what could possibly be going wrong besides that, and if there is another alternative. I mean, Apple DID just buy Logic, and FCP IS there dang flagship . . . and now Logic is there music flagship. FCP and Logic should be at least SOMEWHAT compatible with one another, no? I certainly don't get these frequent hard freezes in FCP, so if it is indeed an FCP/Logic conflict, it seems Logic is conflicting with FCP, and not the other way around. I guess I don't really want to presently go through all the trouble of unintalling and reinstalling my apps and putting them in seperate users only to find out that Logic is still hard crashing because it wasn't an app conflict afterall and the real problem lies in some other area that I should have looked into before going through all the multiple user group headache in the first place. Please let me know if anyone requires further information. I guess this might do for the moment (I hope). I would appreciate any help that could be offered, as I am working on the post production of a feature length film for which both FCP AND Logic are absolutely vital. Thank you very much, and again, sorry for such a long question. Javier Calderon
