It's not great for recording into like a conventional DAW but, I bought Ableton Live for this exact reason. It can be made to behave just as a tape machine would in this regard. Live 4 may be better as an all around DAW. We'll soon see. It's due out this month. ...oh yeah. Live is an insanely great composing tool. Well worth the money even without it's vari-speed capability.
