What you should do is turn the controllers from the O8 into so-called Fader Events -- these are the events Logic uses for automation. This involves some environment trickery -- not too complicated, but still... At my website, in the Logic section, you find a download called 'autodemo.zip' which demonstrates in 4 tutorial songs how to set up your gear so you can use an external faderbox to record track based automation.
