The fan/harddrive noise is a hardware thing (and to a degree the firmware - often in PC's you have some control over the fan speed). If the G5 is liquid cooled then it should be a lot quieter, and there have been improvements in fan noise over the years - my new G4 is somewhat quieter than my old one.
