In short.....NO! I recently did a test with Logic Pro and Cubase SX to
see what gives with audio data transfer in different audio
applications. While Logic is stellar at dual processor CPU usage,(much
better than Cubase) it is terrible at audio transfer from disk. Since
your track count is heavily dependent on the ability of an application
to transfer data from disk, Logic fails to deliver the track counts it
should in OS X.
I thought the audio transfer rate thing was an OS X core audio
problem, but in fact, it's a Logic problem. Cubase SX has much better
transfer rates than Logic. Cubase SX was showing practically zero on
it's VST Disk Performance meter with 36 tracks of 48khz audio being
streamed. Logic was at about 30% on it's meter!!
If you think about it, everything else audio and video transfers great
on a G5. The only thing that gives you the "Disk Too Slow" warning
is
Logic. This is a major "pet peeve" of mine about Logic.
If transfers were being completed as they should, the G5 would be
capable of 128 tracks of audio at 48khz, and at around 64 tracks at
96khz. Right now, you'll be lucky to get 12 to 16 tracks of 96khz
sample rate audio to stream from your HD before Logic gives you the
"Disk Too Slow/System Overload" message.
No amount of disk "Raid" or 10,000rpm SCSI or SATA disks, or FW800
drives are going to help your track count. There's a problem with Logic.
