I've been reading with appreciation the views on this subject; the
FAQ is a sweet resource, I've gone to it many times myself for
answers to questions both simple and complex.
First and foremost, this forum is (to me) more than just a group of
people with answers, it's a community. When new people come here
knocking on the door for the first time, the timbre of the response
says a lot about how that community interfaces with the larger world.
In my humble opinion, redirecting them to the FAQ is akin to handing
a person a pamphlet, telling them to read it before coming back, and
shutting the door. Yes, it's effective on a lot of levels, and
gives them a resource, yet it lacks a welcoming feel. And, if you
haven't noticed, I'm all about the vibe... I like to enjoy life and
be light as much as possible.
On a practical level, the existence of FAQ's will never prevent
people from asking the questions answered therein, and reality seems
to bear this out time and again. Being a practical guy, I endeavor to
accept reality, it's easier on my stomach. In that spirit, my
preference is to answer their question, AND refer them to the FAQ for
further reading. That way their initial experience with us is
immediately helpful, inviting, and (hopefully) sets them up in a way
that empowers them to dig deeper and learn more on their own time.
Thanks for listening,
