I don't think Firewire target mode will work, but you can either use
Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware) or (if you have panther on nyour G4)
the panther disk utility restore function to clone your G4 drive to a
firewire drive, then "restore"| it onto your G5. I've done it from
G4
powerbook to a G5 and all authorisations worked saving me hours of
authorisation fun.
I have heard that there can be problems with CCC so check that you can
boot from from the firewire clone before getting rid of the G4. See my
thread on Apple discussions about this, there were some very helpful
