great question - I was JUST about to ask it myself. today I had my first
session run exclusively in Logic. while there were some minor quirks due to
my still learning how Logic does things, overall I'd say the session was
surprisingly productive. not one crash or weird error on Logic's part (can't
say the same for when I use DP).
The session involved tracking bass, vocals and some additional synth parts
over a stereo AIFF file I received (which contained the drums and other
synth parts). While I knew the tempo of the song I still had to go into the
audio file and strip silence and then try to line up the beats to the grid.
I was very disappointed by Logic's grid - not only does the grid not seem
able to display increments less than a bar, but an even bigger bummer is
that the grid does not appear above the audio region you're trying to line
up. so I tried using markers -- same issue.
is there a way to change this behavior so that the grid and markers appear
in front of the regions?
my first half-hour of the session was extremely tense due to a bizarre
setting in my Autoload that I never knew existed. I kept trying to import
the stereo AIFF file into my arrangement but no matter how many times I
imported the 5 minute file it always wound up stopping at bar 14. when I
tried to scroll my arrange window horizontally it would also stop at bar 14
and bars 15 and on were sort of greyed out. I made sure that cycle wasn't
set and kept scratching my head.
finally looking through various books I discovered that Logic lets you set
the length of the song. well, for some reason mine was set to 14 bars. so,
even though I tried to import/paste info that was longer than 14 bars ( a
lot longer) Logic wouldn't play nice. It would have been nice for Logic to
realize that the song end needed to be extended due to the length of the
audio file I was importing. or at the very least a warning saying "the
length of the audio file you are importing exceeds the set song length.
click cancel to change the song length or click OK and audio beyond the song
end will be discarded" (or something to that effect). would have saved
a
newbie like me from a lot of confusion!

brian
