They _do_ look differently -- at least over here they do. Aliases
have their name in italic typeface, whereas regular sequences use
regular typeface.

SMPTE Lock. It's in one of the menus of the Arrange window (the
rightmost one, I think). Just select a sequence, and pick "SMPTE
Lock". I don't remember the default keycommand offhand, but just
open the Key Commands window, and type 'smpte' in the 'Find' box to
show the commands (lock/unlock) and their keyboard shortcuts.
