I have plunged again into the manual (yes, I am one who reads the
entire manual when I first get a program, and I had read it) and am
particularly paying attention to Key Commands.
One question and one observation:
Q: Some of the Key Commands appear unusable in the default
configuration. For example, "Clear Overload flag in Audio Channel
Display" has a U-umlaute, which is hard to figure out how to access.
(Does it mean "Opt-U", perchance?) And "Snip" has a
less-than sign,
which is -- on my keyboard -- Shift-, (Shift-comma) which already has
an assignment. Similarly ` (backquote) is not listed anywhere, but
seems to be a shortcut for Deselect All.
Any comments?
Observation: Less-experienced users, such as me, complain that we want
zoom to always zoom to the SPL, not to the left-most selected object,
if one is selected. More-experienced users don't seem to see this as an
issue. And I may have just found out why: they don't use it. At least
that's my guess. It's the kind of zooming that converts from other
programs use. But in fact, I've discovered the Key Commands that make
this kind of zooming useless: Z and Shift-Z.
Select the object (or objects) you want to zoom in to and press
"Z".
(I've remapped it so that it only does a horizontal zoom instead of the
default horizontal and vertical.) Once you're done, Shift-Z zooms you
back out to where you were. Sort-of like the magnify tool, except
faster, and WAY faster than the idea of moving the SPL and then zooming
several telescope clicks in.
So in some sense, the "visual cognates" (as it were) like the
telescope
buttons will fool you because they are either unused by advanced users
or they have different uses from what they appear, but in specific
cases act similarly to their equivalents in other programs. Sort of
like French-English cognates, which will lead to unexpected problems,
as opposed to German- or Russian-English cognates which are reasonable
guides.
Make any sense?
