For budget high-performance stuff, I think the default purchase is usually an AMD XP+ series processor, unless you have a specific reason to spend more on an intel. Intel spend a lot on advertising and charge premium prices, AMD are more keenly priced. I know that some "graphics" people used to specifically ask for Pentium if they were worried that their favourite software might be pentium-optimised and not have the same level of AMD support, but I think things might have move don a bit since then. Certainly, logic is supposed to include code optimised for both. As for chip-sets, dunno. I did once try to find out what was recommended, but after listing all the chipsets that some person or other had advised against for music, I found that /everything/ seemed to be ruled out! It /is/ very important to make sure that you have the latest motherboard and chipset drivers. Sometimes I think it's its perhaps better to get a board that has been out for a few months, than get the very latest board red-hot off the production line, and find that it's got some unresolved teething problems with its drivers that won't be fixed until the first software or firmware update six months away. BTW, if anyone out there is feeling exceptionally brave, there's a new Shuttle barebones system ("SN85G4")that takes the new 64-bit AMD chip, hypertransport-thingy, serial ATA ... spec sounds a bit like a mini-G5. http://www.shuttle.com/hq/product/barebone/specs_b.asp?B_id% [Erk]
