I'm not too terribly familiar with RME gear (aside from the overall great reputation of RME stuff), but perhaps there's either a software control or hardware switch for +4dBu / -10dBv? You may have it set to Mic in, instead of line-level, which is what it should be coming in as (if your pre-amp is outputting at line). I'm some cards (and I believe on the RME), you'll find this setting either in software, on JUMPERED on the PCI card itself (a hassle to fix, I'm sure, but a fix that you'd only have to apply once) Hope that helps==) Ds.
