So is this something that there's an easy way to do? Or should I just be
using
something like Steinberg's Virtual Guitarist? I have never used anything
like
that, and
don't really know whether it would address this issue. That is, in VG, do I
simply enter
a stacked chord and when it gets played by the VG instrument it sounds like
a
guitar
strum?

If you do not play guitar, you are not selling your professional custom
standard midi files and are just looking to use VG for various strumming
patterns
in yours' and other clients studio projects Virtual Guitarist 1 and 2
(electric
guitars only) are must haves. This, as a user of VG, I consider a fact of
life.
VG does not work like the midi strumming patterns you have described. VG is
programmed similar to the Digitech Vocalist background tracks you see in
some
custom cover sequences from professional midi file companies. Your midi
programmed quantized chords trigger VG's REX file samples of real session
players
strumming various patterns (accessed thru program changes within your
sequence),
pretty easy stuff, really. Very realistic to my ears. The REX file structure
allows for any and all (even realtime) tempo changes without any noticable
degradation of sound quality. This is the cool part. Control Changes #s are
used
to control different variations within the program.
As good as my guitar strumming midi programming has become, I only use that
technique in my professional custom midi files (out of necessity). VG is how
I
do 75% of all studio stuff, except for the live guitar players I always use
when solos are involved (VG does not do solos).
I do feel this was one of my best VI investments. It is really good for
mapping out inexpensive but quality sounding demos.
I run it as a native VSTi in Logic or with "Audio Ease's" VST
Wrapper in
Digital Performer.
Hope this helps.
