Have you tried the Griffen Technology OSX g4port Serial MIDI Driver?
From the Griffen website...
'gPort Serial MIDI Driver
Software for enabling compatibility with legacy serial
devices and the gPort, g4Port. Requires OS X version
10.2.3 and includes the gPort driver plus an application
used to select the port for use with Core MIDI.'

I have not tried it, but there is an OSX driver for his setup.
Probably can't edit programs, use SMPTE, etc. though, but I'm not sure.
