I also had this problem, it occurred on one of the two PowerBooks we own.
Why
did you buy a new battery????? Apple is aware of the problem and had a
replacement out to me within 48 hrs, at no cost to me. In the meantime your
PowerBook is still useable, it just needs to remain plugged in to an
electric outlet.
