Well, if you are interested in rackmounted firewire audio, there's
already the PreSonus FIREstation, so perhaps the top end of the
market is already being worked on.
I do think there's a real gap lower down for non-rack audio
interfaces, though ...
I agree that USB sucks for this sort of thing ... and if you want to
have stereo in and stereo out and one basic effects loop the existing
emagic 2/6 and 6/2M interfaces can't do it (you'd want a 4/4!), so
there's definitely a gap in the range IMO.
I suppose they /could/ produce a 4/4M, but if they were producing a
new model, IMO, yeah, they should go ahead and do it properly and
make it firewire. Perhaps even a firewire 2/2M
(Edirol already do small 2/2 interfaces, but only USB).

If they /did/ do a simple cheapish 2/2M with firewire interface, I
wonder if it would be possible to allow it to be plugged straight
into an iPod to allow the iPod to be used as a portable recorder?
Now THERE's an interesting thought ...
