Subject: [LUG] [GEN] MIDI input to plug-in instruments bypassing the sequencer
Message #131698
Using Logic Gold 5.3 under OS 9 on the Mac, I am having a problem routing MIDI note information directly from a physical input (AMT8 USB, built-in MIDI drivers only) to the EXS24 plug-in, running as an ASIO Audio Instrument object (Delta TDIF). The intended function is to use the EXS24 as a dedicated drum sampler INDEPENDENT of the sequencer, i.e., without requiring that the channel strip for the EXS24 be selected in the Arrange window. Is this possible with plug-in instruments? I have carefully verified the MIDI channels of the input controller and the plug-in instrument object itself; the Monitor objects show that MIDI note information is reaching the plugin from the physical input AND from a set of fader objects (buttons with feedback, set to pass Note Ons) that feed the plugin. I've created a special fader object (Channel Switcher) which switches between destinations (feedback note-on buttons routed to an external MIDI module), or a duplicate set routed to the EXS24). When selecting the Channel Switcher object in the Arrange window, I can play the external MIDI module from the controller without any difficulty, as well as playing the note-on buttons on screen; setting the switch to the EXS24 position generates no sound, even from the note-on buttons behind it, which are cabled directly to the object. I've even tried routing MIDI from a dummy object OUT of the interface and back into a dedicated physical input connected DIRECTLY to the EXS24, with no success. Is this a fundamental limitation of the way plug-in instruments respond to MIDI in Logic? Are the plug-in instruments exclusively under the control of the sequencer? David Dever
