WELCOME TO THE LOGIC USERS GROUP (LUG)!
On this list, you'll find a community of users who share all the information
you ever wanted to know about Emagic Logic Audio. Members share tips, help
each other use the software, and talk about any other Logic-related issues.
This is a users group, not an official list. Emagic employees may answer
your questions, but they're not obliged to. Because the LUG consists of over
9500 posters from around the world, using every conceivable combination of
hardware and versions of Logic, we keep this list constantly monitored in
order to maintain a consistent flow of information and sense of community.
We've tried to make this document brief and helpful. Please save it for
future reference, and consult it whenever appropriate. This document was
last updated May 16th, 2002.
Before we get started, please take a look a few key sections of the Logic
Users Group web page which are often overlooked:
A) Messages: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/logic-users/messages Here you
will find a searchable archive of previous messages. Note that because we
have well over 120000 messages now, the Yahoo servers only search about 500
messages at a time. After you search once, if you don't find any results,
click "Next" down at the bottom to search the next 5000 messages.
This way you can search through our entire archive if necessary.
B) Bookmarks: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/logic-users/links Here you can
find a large number of useful links to other web pages that have to deal
with Logic or music-making in some way.
C) Polls: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/logic-users/polls - here you will
find a list of different polls you can vote on. Because we have such a large
number of people on this list it is very easy to collect useful information
using these polls. Feel free to create a poll yourself if you think of a
good idea!
D) Files: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/logic-users/files - here you can
find many useful files other members have uploaded, including presets for
various Emagic plugins and instruments, among other things. Note that we
only have about 20 megabytes of storage space (so please don't upload
anything huge), and all files uploaded need to be completely legal.
1. OFFICIAL LANGUAGE
The LUG has posters from every background and nationality, and is very proud
of that! However, in order to facilitate communication between everyone, all
communication on this list will be conducted in English.
2. SUBJECT LINES:
The first thing that is important is to use descriptive subject lines. The
subject line should be related to the body of your mail.
You then need to add one of these four abbreviations:
[APPLE] : Messages that deal with Apple buying Emagic
[GEN] : General = both platforms = Mac + PC
[LAM] : Logic Audio Mac = platform specific
[LAW] : Logic Audio Windows = platform specific
[LC] : Logic Control (both Windows and Mac platforms)
[OT] : Off Topic (more info on this further on in this mail)
Most mails will be [GEN] as most topics discussed affect both platforms
(Logic is for 99% identical on both platforms). Why do we need to use these
abbreviations? Well, since this list has a lot of traffic, people want to
sort/filter emails by platform (or filter OT mails e.g.). You can set up
your email program to sort/filter on subject lines. The abbreviations will
be a great help for you in doing this. Want to know how to set up your email
program to sort/filter emails? This information will soon be provided at
http://www.belway.com/lug
If you do not include one of the abbreviations above in your subject line,
your email will be returned to you for correction.
3. QUOTE CORRECTLY
Many people are subscribed to the digest version of the list (more info
below), so it is important that you quote correctly when replying to the
list. Here's what you do:
+ Trim your messages: only quote those parts of an email that you are
addressing (but be sure to leave in the part you are responding to!)
+ Please use the following rule when quoting: do not quote more than 10
lines without addressing the text.
+ In your quotes, always cut off footers (footers = info how to unsubscribe
etc, it gets added automatically to each mail anyway).
+ Try to make sure the original and CORRECT poster is given attribution for
the portion you quote.
+ Reply below the original text.
Want to learn how to quote correctly? This information will soon be provided
at http://www.belway.com/lug
4. OFF TOPIC (= OT) MAILS
You can ask OT questions or make OT statements on the list. However, replies
to OT mails should be done privately, or to our dedicated OT list, where you
can freely discuss any OT subjects. Moderators will usually allow the OT
messages to appear on the list, so that people know it is being asked, but
all subsequent responses not sent privately or to the OT list will be
redirected.
Here's how to get to the OT list:
To subscribe: logic-ot-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
To unsubscribe: logic-ot-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com
To post: logic-ot@yahoogroups.com
Manage your subscription: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/logic-ot/join
5. GENERAL NETIQUETTE
Please treat people the way you want to be treated yourself. Personal
attacks, name-calling, flame wars, etc will not be tolerated. In order to
avoid rejected posts and ultimately being banned from the LUG, please think
before you post, and always be respectful even when you vehemently disagree
with a post/thread.
6. MODERATION
To keep a list of this size focused and efficient it is necessary to keep
the list moderated. This means that you may notice a small delay before one
of the co-moderators approves your post; please don't get alarmed and
repost. You'll know if your post is rejected, it'll be sent back to you.
Otherwise, assume that this is just normal operating procedure.
Reasons for rejecting posts:
- Offensive language: emails that have a high likelihood of causing offence
will be returned. We'll do our best to suggest some less offensive wording.
Please keep in mind that we have subscribers from all backgrounds, cultures
and languages. Therefore, what may not sound offensive to you, might sound
offensive to others. In an international list of this size, always err on
the side of caution and be extra-sensitive to the feelings of others.
- Personal attacks will be rejected and will get you banned instantly.
- Political mails are filtered out.
- It's OK to have a negative opinion about something. It's OK to express
that opinion on the list. Please use your best judgment however, because
continuous venting with no constructive information or details is not
acceptable.
- While we all enjoy a good natured jab at other people's systems every now
and again, with a list this size, such posts become fully fledged
"platform wars" in no time. Logic is almost 100% cross-platform.
So is this list. Therefore, we can't allow platform wars. If you're not
interested in reading mails that handle "the other" platform, then
you can filter them out using the subject line abbreviations.
- Mails related to cracked software, how to get it, or defending its use.
This will get you banned immediately. Piracy or its defense is unacceptable
to the LUG.
- Topics that have been "beaten to death" we sometimes filter out,
especially when it's just come up. You can find these discussions in the
archives: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/logic-users/messages -- remember,
the archives are your friend!
7. DEVELOPER CONTRIBUTIONS
Developers and other representatives from audio and music related companies
are welcome contributors to the LUG! We expect list members to respect them
as they would any other poster, even if a list member is having a problem
with one of their company's products.
8. RETAILER CONTRIBUTIONS
Retailers and employees of music related retail firms are also welcome
contributors to the LUG. On-topic informative contributions, even if
sales-related, are welcome, however simply using the LUG for advertising
will be moderated. Collecting email addresses from LUG contributors is
unacceptable and will result in your immediate removal from the list.
9. GENERAL TIPS:
In your post, include the following to maximize the chance on success to
receive a reply:
+ The Logic version number (e.g. Logic 4.8.1, Logic 5.0...)
+ Logic Silver/Gold/Platinum/ or any other version
+ System information: the hardware and software you're using
Before asking a question, it's good to:
+ Read the Logic Manual
+ Read any other documentation (update info files, read list of key
commands...)
+ Check Emagic's webpage: http://www.emagic.de
+ Check Emagic's infoweb:
http://www.emagic.de/english/support/infoweb/index.html
+ Check the archives of this list:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/logic-users/messages
+ Want an environment? Check: http://www.swiftkick.com/lugec.html
+ Visit the LUG Homepage at http://www.belway.com/lug
Attachments are automatically removed from all emails to protect subscribers
from viruses and other problems. Instead, feel free to use the 20Mb free web
space of this list: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/logic-users/files/
10. HOW TO HANDLE THE HIGH TRAFFIC?
Manage your account. You can choose to receive individual emails or digests
(25 emails bundled in one mail) or you may prefer to read this list on the
web only. Change this setting at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/logic-users/join
Setting your account to "web only" is also useful when going on
vacation or holiday.
You may also wish to sort your emails. Several email programs are able to
sort emails by date/subject/thread/sender/... You can also filter emails. If
you don't want to read emails related to the other platform, you can set up
a filter in your email program to filter it out for you. More info on how to
set up email sorting and filtering, can soon be found at
http://www.belway.com/lug
11. FEEDBACK TO EMAGIC
The official address for support from Emagic is support@...
The official address for info from and suggestions to Emagic is info@...
However, some Emagic employees and several beta testers are subscribed to
the list. If you write a highly interesting mail with good ideas or
suggestions, then there's a chance someone might pick it up. No guarantees
though.
