When I buy a piece of gear, I try to take these kinda things into account.
For example when I bought a MOTU midi interface a little over a year ago,
having USB was a big requirement, even though my computer at the time
didn't have USB. But my thought was that serial would only be around for so
long before being replced by USB and having the USB on an interface would
ensured a longer lifespan. I am sure though that someone will make some
kind of USB to serial adaptor or something like that. Also, keep in mind
that you wont have to replace your stuff for some time. YOu have a good
year at least before anything starts getting outdated.
