As a Mac user, I don't agree that this is good news for Mac users, for several reasons. I was thinking about upgrading from my G4/400 to a dual G4, but I wanted to stay with OS 9.x because I have a pair of StudI/O cards that won't be supported under OSX, and my 9.x system is very stable. Do you think Apple will support Logic under 9.x? Hah! They're going to pull the plug on that as soon as they can. and just as they have done with the Windows users, they'll do it with virtually no notice. What's next? Killing VST support for plugins on the Mac? That would mean I couldn't run Waves or my UAD card. I am giving a very serious re-think as to what I'm going to do. Right now I have to say a new Pentium with a pair of RME interfaces and Cubase SX (along with a cross-grade of Waves, and of course my UAD will run with PC as is) is looking pretty good. I am really glad I didn't upgrade to 5.x. I can't imagine how all the Windows guys who upgraded to 5.x feel right now. If my reaction is typical of even half of the current Logic Mac users, I think Apple/Emagic have made a horrible mistake. My personal belief is that Emagic won't lose just 35% of their business--I think they will lose a significant percentage of the Mac folks, too. Someone compared this to Gibson acquiring Opcode--not quite sure it's that bad, but it's bad enough to probably turn this (formerly) loyal Logic user over to Steinberg. Very bad for PC users - I hope that there will be some program in place to make it easy to stay with the program. Have to say it is good news for Mac users - hopefully this means an OSX version will come along real soon now. It also means no more "waiting for Apple" for new features etc. This is good. <snip>
