Marketing preferences affect extra spam emails that are sent to you. I think what you are talking about is the ad you get between clicking on the message and seeing the message. This only happens when you read online, and is part of how Yahoo! makes money, so there is no way it can be turned off. If you have the list forwarded to another email address, the ads go away.
