- ok, so I gave ProTools 7.3 a serious chance thinking the latest features
would make it
possbile for me not to feel too restricted and bored with working entirely
in PT. I Use NI
Akustik Piano, BFD drums (andy johns expansion pack is the bomb),
Spectrasonics etc etc a
lot...rarely more than stereo recording on top of that. But I have to say I
think the RTAS
performance on my system (dual 2.5 G5, 4bg, HD3) sucks A LOT compared to
what Logic
gives me with ESB (which is annoying too I have to say). Do any of you who
have switched to
PT found that RTAS is just not very effecient on CPU as well ? I hate when
the playback takes
a couple of seconds to start and that moving a loop makes the audio stop.
There are many
great things in ProTools but I cannot sit and wait 4 minutes for it to
bounce an RTAS
instrument in realtime every time I'm out of CPU power and then thing makes
clicks and
pops....grrrrr !!!
Logic TDM is still better for me...I'd pay serious money for a Logic that is
rewire slave
compatible with ProTools...
Thanks to everyone for keeping this list alive....
Peter
How have you set your processor performance / playback engine in PT?

Yea, i find I can only get about 30% or less of the power under RTAS
as I can with core audio or ESB with my dual 2.7 gig G5...I NEVER
pushed the limits of the native engine while using Logic and I'm
bumping into quite a bit with PT. PT7 was supposed to bring more
efficient RTAS but i can't say i've seen it. Maybe digi's own AIR
inst are the only plugs to take advantage of it. i definitely
couldn't get the job done without my Gigastudios. I'm considering
some sort of advanced patchbay system so I can easily go between an
HD2 protools rig and a native setup with a 2408mkiii in the same
computer. besides the RTAS limitations PT7.3.1 is a killer update
though.

Agreed about the performance, but at least they sound awesome... OTOH, ESB
(though it worked absolutely fine under OS 9) is simply unusable under X and
it will always be, even if they fix it, and the one and only reason why I
for one will ***never*** use it is its crappy, and I mean it, crappy sound.
Same can be said about offline bouncing. To me if I need some ESB tracks in
my session, there's no other way then rebooting to 9 and working there...
Unfortunately no longer an option for those of you using newer machines
:-( . This is the only reason why I don't see Logic TDM as my way for future
upgrades and am still trying to decide whether I should move to PT or go
native with Logic...

Andy

Hello,
i am sure many of you are familiar with the I/O setup (input/outputs
assignments/labels) in
ProTools (PT). I am also sure that many of you are aware of the fact that
those assignments in
logic are not per song as they are in PT. I find PT's per song approach
really useful, mainly
because i am working in several projects at the same time, conmuting between
a MacBook
and a Logic TDM station with a G5. I am trying to come up with a fast way to
change that part
of the Audio Configuration (the lables). Anyone has a suggestion, maybe with
applescript or
something like that involved. I am posting this also in the Logic TDM list,
i think this info is
useful in both lists.
warm regards from Mexico
Vico
Have you constructed your auto load song? That is the best way to make your
most frequent template. You can also like PT make template sessions and
mark them as ³stationary² pad in the info pane of the session.
Click on the
session once and type cmd>I.
--
- thanks for the response to all...I don't think I hear any sound
differerence in RTAS over using ESB in Logic..when I bounce - even
offline in Logic my tracks sound the same in PT and logic with NI
synths for instance. Anybody else second the opinion that RTAS sounds
better than CoreAudio/ESB ?? I only really get into ESB problems when
the CPU gets overloaded...then I have to restart and it sucks but
other than that it works fine here. My main problem with Logic TDM is
the lack of delay compensation on the TDM side. The midi is still way
better and I actually like the environment idea in Logic...it crashes
when I have too many audio edits and move loops around on the fly but
PT has weird crashes as well....I just haven't found the workarounds
to those yet...btw my hardware settings in PT are usually 512 and
level 2...that's ok until I load Akustik piano and BFD...then I get
clicks and pops left and right and I wanna throw out my PT rig :-)
Best Regards
Peter
> Anybody else second the opinion that RTAS sounds
> better than CoreAudio/ESB ??
I guess I need to clarify my point here: it's not RTAS VS ESB, but PT
driver/mixer VS Digi CoreAudio Driver/ESB... I meant with PT/RTAS you don't
use the Digi CoreAudio driver, therefore the sound is noticeably better.
Real TDM tracks sound fine in Logic, though honestly I still hear the
difference between my mixes done in Logic and PT...
Best,
Andy
So...has anyone actually tried it and can confirm that auto input
monitoring can now be either 'on' or 'off'? Which version of LOGIC?
Thanks

I've re-installed today PT7.3, PT7.3.1cs1 and a complete de-and re-
install of logic 7.2 (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?
artnum04018) + updates 7.2.1 and 7.2.3 and it finally works.
Thanks everybody for your help!

Hi there...does anyone have a great experience with running these two on
separate machines
and sync'ing over ethernet/network-midi ? I can get it to work ok but the
timing is not
consistent...it basically doesn't lock into the same place every time it
catches on (using logic
as master) - is there a tweak to any of the settings I need to be aware of ?
or should I go old
school and hook up two midi interfaces and a good old midi cable between
them ?
Thanks for any help :-)
Peter
You should have both systems synched to the same clock. This might
help keep a more consistent lock, and will definitely prevent any drift.

Hey there!
I am a Logic Pro 7 user on a 1.8 Ghz imac G5. I run lots of tracks so need
extra processing capability. Could someone describe to me the possibilities
of hooking my setup with a TDM? device to acquire more processing? I really
know nothing much at this point in time. What would be the hassles,
expense, successes, general overview of how it's done? Thanks!
I'm thinking of stopping with the combination DAE+DTDM and switch to
DAE+Core audio+Motu 828 MKII.
My questions:
- Does core audio with 828 MKII sounds better than DTDM with 192?
- Is DAE+Core audio more stable than DAE+DTDM?
- Is it sufficient that I install the Motu Core Audio driver and
connect the 828 MKII with firewire to my mac?
- What about clock with the combination 828MKII , 192, 2x96i, 1x96?
I heard about connecting the 192 and the 828MKII with lightpipe.
My questions:
- How do I have to do make this connection? One way lightpipe?
- Do I keep with a lightpipe-connection at my 192 all analog 8 in-and
16 outputs for DAE?
- Do I have to change settings in the hardware setup settings of my 192?
- Can I use lightpipe at 96khz?
- What are the advantages of a lightpipe-connection in stead of
connecting the 828MKII just with firewire?
Any help is appreciated!

Sorry to bump this all over again, but how do you turn off the PM?
If I uncheck "load database at startup" it still crashes on
search....
couldn't find any other PM prefs
anyone help please?

Hey Wim
I can¹t speak for the 192 questions as I am a hpold out mix TDM user
but to
connect the 828 mkII you need to both connect the firewire and lightpipe
connections. And lightpipe connections both ways will allow you to bus TDM
instruments to native tracks (eg spacedesigner). When you hook up the 828
via lightpipe set the clock source on the motu firewire console to adat
optical so it will clock off your 192 (or whatever you 192 is synched to).
Using Coreaudio with TDM/HD is better sounding and most importantly more
stable. The 828 mkII as well as the rme fireface have onboard mixing
capabilities so I use it to also submix hardware synths and samplers on my
system. Be aware that if you are not already a protools or logic owner
there may be some version tracking required to get compatible programs and
no TDM support for intel MACs as of yet.

Hey Guys,
Selling my RME DIGI9636 PCI card. I'm posting it here, because I used
to use it to pipe 8 channels out of Logic and into the TDM hardware
side, bypassing ESB. Just plug the lightpipe cables out of the the
card and into the 192 or 96 i/o. Worked great. Asking $300, includes
a couple lightpipe cables, you pay shipping.
Also, have a Lucid GENx6 wordclock with the rack shelf and extra
dummy faceplate. $275.
Thanks,
brian

I am a ProTools user, so I don't have experience in using the nodes
feature, but it seems like a good solution for you over investing in a
ProTools setup. Not to mention, as of now the Logic and TDM operation
seems not to function as well as expected.
Using the nodes feature, you buy another gigabit mac and connect it
and logic uses the computer as additional processing power. Maybe
others who have used it can give you their experiences.

Here an interesting question:
I have a Mix ++ system, PT 6.4, Logic 7.1.1, OS 10.3.9 running on a G4
1.25
All is well with my system for the most part - as you all know, this is
the last version that worked before Logic TDM systems became really
buggy. You also would know that I can't move in any direction (upgrades
to the OS or Protools) without having to move to a different computer,
or HD (a huge expense for me), only to inherit bugs that i don't have
now. If it wasn't for the bugginess of the HD move I might do it, but
why bother when it wouldn't run as well as what i have now?
One way around this might be to buy an MBox 2 and Protools 7.3 and put
that on a separate computer (perhaps another used g4) and run that in
sync and route the audio back into my mix plus. This would allow me to
buy plugs like drum rehab, and in other cases, RTAS versions of things
that are always cheaper than TDM anyway. If I network the 2 computers i
could likely load and echange files between the computers fairly easily
and treat the Mbox system as a place to treat and edit tracks and then
bring the treated files back into Logic/TDM
1. Does this idea seem reasonable?
2. Would running them in synch be relatively painless?
Thanks for your ideas
Greg

Hmmm... Not to me... Those MBox converters are unusable to my ears...
Also, how do you plan to clock the whole system (slave MBox to S/PDIF
or what)? Another thought... PT LE with RTAS in general has never
been as efficient as, say, Logic in native mode, so you shouldn't
count on it too much if you want to make large sessions with lots of
VIs or heavy plugs... To me it's either going native with the
Symphony or Ensemble or switching to PT software...
Just MMHO though...

Hey greg
Are you talking about using it as an effects processor? If that¹s the
case
you could get a digi 001 or 002 and connect via lightpipe into an adat
bridge (good chance you already have one) and get 8 channels of send/return.
A good transition strategy you might consider thpugh is getting a good G5
(PCIE) and run Logic on it (or Performer) and synch it to your TDM Rig. It
won¹t solve your plug in issues but it will smooth your transition to a
HD
rig.

Thanks
essentially it would be a place to process certain plugins (like drum
rehab) that i can't get for PT 6.4, and would allow me to buy and use
rtas plugs, which are cheaper than TDM. i would still work mainly in my
Logic 7/TDM environment on my existing computer, but would bring tracks
over into the PTLE system to process and add certain rtaz effects, and
then bring those tracks back into my main logic setup. I wouldn't
really be running too many tracks in sync very often.
Does the Digi002 sound better than the Mbox?
thanks again

001 won't be of much help as the last 001 compatible version of PT is
6.4, so you won't be able to run newer plug-ins with it...
