Subject: [L-TDM] Scanning EXS instruments
Message #23801
Starting up Logic 7.1 takes ages. I have a very large EXS library (200GB) stored on a secondary internal drive. Is there any way at all to speed this up. It takes about 10 mins and does it upon every startup. Surely this is not right ... Ainslie

Subject: [L-TDM] Vienna instruments window triggers ESB distortion in Logic Pro 7.2.1 TDM
Message #23803
Anyone with the new Vienna Instruments plug-in? Can you reproduce this bug? 1. Set up 2 screen sets in Logic, one with an Arrange window open, one with an Environment window open and an instrument object, with the instrument object on a track in the arrange window so it can be played. 2. Go to the instrument window and instantiate Vienna instrument. The plug-in window appears with an "Show Window" button. All other plug-ins show the plugin interface where the button is. Anyway.... 3. Click the button to open the Interface window, and load a preset. Sound is fine so far, but the Logic instrument window title bar becomes greyed out, play/stop key doesn't work, screenset keys don't work. No other au instruments have these problems. 4. Without closing the interface window, click on the Logic environment window to bring it to the front. Play/stop and screenset keys now work. Switch to the Arrange window. 5. Switch back to the Environment window. The interface window has vanished, but the plug-in window with the "Show Window" button is still there. Up to this point everything still plays fine. 6. Click the button to open the Interface window. Now there is horrible distortion on the Vienna instrument, and all other instruments on the ESB busses. Workaround: De-instanciate Vienna instrument. Save song. Quit Logic. Activity monitor shows vsldaemon (Not Responding), Synsopos, VSL-Server still running. Log out Mac OSX user, log back in, open the Song. Re-instantiate Vienna instrument and re-load preset. Be careful to ALWAYS CLOSE THE Vienna Instrument interface window before switching to another screenset . N.B. closing the V.I. interface window does not bring the other windows to the front, so you still need to click on either the environment window or the plug-in window to get the keys working so you can switch screensets or use the Play/Stop key. I think the bug has something to do with re-opening the interface window which should already be visible but has vanished when switching screensets. If Logic is playing when opening the V.I. interface window for the second time, usually the ESB distortion is triggered. But occasionally I get a Direct TDM error: System Overload (-10011) and then the sound plays fine. Logic Pro 7.2.1 Mac OSX 10.4.6 Vienna Instrument installer: OSX-1.06-ppc.pkg Do you know where to post bug reports to Vienna Instruments, other than the V.I. user forum? Roy Nicolson UPROAR MUSIC

Hi, I don't have the new VSL Plugs, but the ProEdition for EXS. That works really fine. For Bug Reports just send an email to the support. They are fast with answering mails and I they have guys there, who work also with Logic. Should be the best to give them a hint. Regards and success! Think of these as dedicated "auxes" that are hardwired with the physical inputs as sources. 2nd, to create a 3rd aux you need to have already created 2 auxes. In other words, a 3rd aux won't be an option until you need it. In even other words, Logic won't allow you to create aux 3 unless aux 1 and 2 have been created. f-erenc szabo, smarty pants Z+E+R+O+B+E+A+T "NOW POWERED BY THE MIRACLE OF THE TRANSISTOR!" <http://home.goodmedia.com/~zerobeat>

ok,but i have 2 aux's already.lol and it still won't let me create a 3rd one. so when you you say input objects,do you mean audio tracks or audio instrument tracks? i tried it with audio tracks, assigning channel 5-6 which is where i have my motif patched. it doesn't seem to work. it's frustrating cause i'm pretty keen when it comes to signal flow and the way things are chained. i appreciate your reply. thanks.

ok,so i just read the manual about input objects, fine, that's what i need. how come it doesn't tell you how to create them? this manual is so good at explaining what things are but sucks at telling you how to go about things. when i go to "create" it automatically creates whatever kind of track i have highlighted. when i go to "create multiple" it doesn't even give me an input object option. this is crazy.lol

Can no one help this guy? Welcome to the wonderful world of the environment. Ok go to your environment window (cmd>8) There is a pull down menu on the left hand side which will give you the choice of "instruments, audio instruments, Audio, etc" Depending on whether you are uning protools hardware or not you may have separate environment levels for DAE and native audio "objects". If you don't already you can create a separate environment level for DAE and native audio by choosing create in the pull down menu I juast mentioned. Name the new level if you don't have one something like Audio DAE (assuming you use protools). Then in that level from the "new" submenu in the environment window select "audio object" which will create a small icon of an orange and black waveform in the environment window with "audio object" beneath it. Double click this little thingamajiggy and it will expand into a channel strip. Now on the left side of the environment window, having selected this mysterious audio object you will see a properties window. "Device" should read DAE for a protools input or Coreaudio or "dtdm" for a native input, and under "channel " select either input or stereo input and choose the channel numbers corresponding to your interface channels used by your external devices, or submixer etc. it is a much more elegant solution than just creating an aux input in protools don't you think?:) anyway once you define all of these aspects of your template, you can save them as "autoload" to the logic application folder (check the manual on this because I have never gotten around to doing it myself) good luck! matt

Subject: [L-TDM] Intel MacBook as Node?
Message #23812
I just picked up a MacBook Black intel, pretty sweet, I have always wanted to try out this node thing but my main system is the G5, My question is this, can I use my MacBook as a node to squeeze some more juice out of my system. Node says only G5 can slave but seems like the Intel machines would be next. Logic sees my macbook as a node, and I send instruments to the node (Sculpture etc...) but it doesnt seem to send. Any thoughts? Alex G5 HD2 Accel , 828MKii dual 2, tiger 10.4.6.

thank you very much matt,i really appreciate that. what would be your best suggestion on making the outboard sounds stronger? they seem week coming in. i've been sequencing using my mpc and pro tools for so many years,it's a crazy change of direction with me purchasing logic. also,i noticed when i have logic set up as reading my tdm system,i'm not able to use the logic sound modules. is this the case or is there a certain way i'm suppose to have the session set up to be able to use my tdm plug ins and the logic sound modules?

Message #23814
Mark, you said you installed Waves Tune Lite as part of your WUP. I have the WUP with my bundle, and I've tried installing Tune Lite by installing the Vocal Bundle and authorizing Lite to my iLok. The iLok part went fine, but the Vocal plugs fail and crash my AU validation on startup. There is some cryptic stuff on the Waves site FAQ about moving plugs from bundles where you only have authorization for one of the plugs, but in the case of Tune, I only see Tune 1.1 in my Plugs folder, not a Tune Lite... Did you have trouble installing yours? It's driving me nuts. The Waves site (and updating and installation processes) really suck...

Hmmm...I'm running a mix setup on a 133 dual G4 (Logic7.1.1), and thought it would be cool to grab an Intel powerbook I could use as a node to my G4. Does anyone know if it will be possible to get this to work? For the time being, I still prefer to stay with the G4 dual running Logic as my master because of the Mix system I'm running, but would want to take advantage of the intel dual powerbook as a node if it's possible. Thanks for any info about this! Subject: [L-TDM] OMF transfer from Tools to Logic 7.1.1
Message #23821
--uFFl1HkSzP4PtpDK5EIEIF8A0tsFxeXMu5GG6aj Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hi everyone. I've been on this group for a while, but never asked a question. Apologies if this topic has been covered, as I've heard it's a known problem. I've posted OMF files to a band member on the other side of the world. We recorded to Tools HD 192 at 96K. Converted down to 48K so that he could use files on his laptop interface - I created OMFs, converting new audio in the process. This makes the process quite easy. But now Logic on the laptop won't import the OMFs. Here's my specs: Dual 2Ghz PowerPC G5 OS 10.4.6 Tools 6.9.3 HD 192 Here's his specs: Powerbook G4 OS X 10.4.? Motu 8in 8out Logic 7.1.1 Apparently 7.1.1 doesn't do it at all, for any setup. Any known solutions? Is 7.1.2 out soon?? Thanks, Richard Pike --uFFl1HkSzP4PtpDK5EIEIF8A0tsFxeXMu5GG6aj Content-Type: text/html; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd">; <html> <head> </head> <body style="background-color: #ffffff;"> <!--~-|**|PrettyHtmlStartT|**|-~--> <div id="ygrp-mlmsg"> <div id="ygrp-msg" style="width: 530px; padding: 0 20px 0 0; float:left; position:relative; z-index:1; "> <!--~-|**|PrettyHtmlEndT|**|-~--> <div id="ygrp-text"> <p>Hi everyone. Subject: Re: Re [L-TDM] Intel MacBook as Node?
Message #23822
This is a reply to #23820.
Hi Andy, I imagine it's really gonna differ from user to user. In my situation, I have a dual 133 G4 with 3 mix farms. Being OS9 bootable enables me to access files going all the way back to projects done in StudioVision on my old ProTools nubus system. Doesn't happen often, but I am currently doing live performance stems on 12 songs I produced for an artist back in 1999, and it's very cool to be able to have access to those OS9 infested TDM files as they were and bounce and import them into my current autoload. Currently, in spite of the older G4 dual-processor i use, I am able to run dtdm and core audio (motu 828) simultaneously. This old G4 is baffeling me with the high amount of native plugs it's able to run, and this is even while throwing some HTDM plugs and Live 5 at it. I'm sure I end up freezing a few more tracks than i'd need to on a G5, but on most projects I'm only freezing the more powerful instruments tracks, which I'd likely do even with the fastest current Mac. I picked up an Adat bridge on Ebay for a price so low i feel guilty about it. Yeah, the tdm stuff doesn't compensate for delays, but I'm so used to using negative delay on audio regions I don't even think about it. (That goes for TDM track automation folders as well when the automation gets behind the non compensated TDM track waveforms. I just discovered that one last week after putting a hi latency htdm plug on a master out; the negative delay parameter of the automation folder put the automation view over the waveform of those tracks back in line). I run virtually crash free 10 hours a day average, and it's a system I would have given my best friend's nuts for over most of the past 15 years. And for about the 4th time with digi hardware systems, I can't run the current Mac OS. (Can't take it no mo'). So far, the added features of logic 7.2 over 7.1.1 aren't making me lose any sleep, but I'm sure the next versions will have features that I want. So I'm thinking that maybe it's for the best I won't be using the Macbook I ordered today as a node. By hooking it up to one of my monitors via a switch box, I can be running the powerbook to run Live 5 into my G4, and use it for additional processor intensive software instruments. I will likely grab an Mbox with adat digital so I can at least have a version of Protools that's current, but that's meaning less and less to me nowadays. The reason I look at the Macbook as a transitional tool for Logic mixTDM system users is partly the way Logic already integrates native with TDM. In effect, the signal is flowing from the native mixer into the TDM mixer even on a one computer system. When Logic 8 implements "must have" features, I'll likely let the Macbook (which will power my cinema display) be where I run logic from and send out via Adat digital into the TDM system on the G4. It's not as elegant as having it all in one box, but the move will only require moving a few Adat cables and I'll be able to keep using my digi interfaces and plugs like I am now. When I got going with all this, I spent $3200 on a used MacCX and $1800 on a 600 meg drive that could barely run 2 tracks without crashing. And now look what you get for a little over a grand. Factor in inflation to really put the cost in perspective. I have gotten huge mileage out of this 733 single processor G4 with a dual 133 G4 upgrade that lets me run my current workstation without feeling left out of anything, but I know that's coming to an end soon. Actually, I could spend the rest of my life on this system and not have nearly enough time to really master all of what's on it, but new things are coming that won't run on it. So I'm hoping that this little Macbook will be the thing that can hold me over until computer power doubles again from here. I only hope that when i get that dream desktop computer "all-in-one" audio system a few years from now that it will mean as much to me as this current system that I built up the hard way, and can still run Galaxy, SoundDiver, SVP and sequences i created on that old MacCX as well as almost anything current (as far as Panther will allow). Subject: [L-TDM] Re: OMF transfer from Tools to Logic 7.1.1
Message #23823
This is a reply to #23821.
Welcome to the wonderful world of OMF. I've been dealing with this for a while now, trying to get answers from all kinds of places on my OMF export/import problems, but nobody seemes to know anything about it. Or don't want to know... No answers from neither Apple nor Digidesign. Anyway, I've been doing this mostly in the other direction, from Logic to ProTools. But I've tested it the other way around and I got it to work, the only problem is that I can't recall which setting I used..... For one thing, OMF doesn't support files bigger than 2 Gb, seems to be a limit there. If your song is bigger than that, you'll have to create multiple OMF's, each one less than 2 Gb. Also, when exporting from Logic, you have to include the audio in the OMF, otherwise it won't open in PT. That doesn't apply when doing it the other way, but I guess in your case you'd want to include the audio for obvious reasons. Which in any case shouldn't be any problem for Logic to import, but I can't swear on that... I'm afraid that this isn't much of an answer to your problem, but there are a number of options in the export dialog, you'll have to experiment with different settings to find out which one will work for you in order to be able to open it in Logic. A wild guess is that maybe the SR-conversion could cause problems, try to do the conversion first, then export, maybe it'll help. Also try the option "Link to source media" instead of "Copy...." If that works better, you have to send a set of copied original files together with the OMF file. I wish that there could be some documentation about this somewhere, but I guess for now we're on our own. Good luck Alar --- In logic-tdm@yahoogroups.com, PLASMA sonic productions <studiob@...> wrote: > > Hi everyone. Subject: [L-TDM] Re: was PT7 LP 7.2 Auto-Tune crash now Waves
Message #23824
> Did you have trouble installing yours? It's driving me nuts. The > Waves site (and updating and installation processes) really suck... Trying to keep stuff up to date and working with my Waves stuff has become stupidly difficult. When they add on a plugin to a bundle to keep you doing the WUP you end up with about four or five different waveshells installed. I recently updated to get Doubler with my platinum bundle and had about a two hour ordeal trying to get all the other plugins to be seen and work correctly. On another system I have that is native, I went through the same thing doing the Tune Lite upgrade. I finally posted to tech support and to their credit, a techie called from Tel Aviv and talked me through it, but it was still trial and error. I followed his instructions, something would work and something wouldn't. He have me installed another thing, etc... This went on for about fifteen minutes before all was working, so even tech support has some difficulty comprehending it all. Not to just bash at Waves, cause I think some of their plugins are just so great. Tune Lite just works way better for me than AutoTune. But I remember buying into Waves stuff in 1995 and thinking what a great company. I wish I still felt that way about it. -mark Mark Henderson mark@dirtydogproductions.net 952.210.4801
