Your warning is in place Lee,
I´ve never really felt the need for EPIC, I just thought I´d try
it
out. Don´t see how it could hurt at this stage...

I think so Jamey.
On Waves 5 you have to get the AU Waveshell 5.01 which is a significant
improvement stabilitywise over 5.0. On the TDM side WS 5.0 works like a
charm, I don´t believe there are any updates beyond that (I´m
obviously
just talking Logic here, I really don´t know my way around PT).
And yes, it is truly amazing that you don´t get working versions of
plugins that you spent a fortune buying.
This policy truly sets Waves aside from just about everyone else.
All the best

I'm creating an audio project in the fashion of "old school, theater of
the mind radio" with
6-7 different voices in multiple environments e.g. rooms (big and small),
outdoors, near
and far conversational perspectives. The duration is about 30-40 minutes.
I'm trying to find the best way to keep my logic session organized and in
particular,
reverbs.
What I'm finding is that I can create a sonic texture for a particular scene
using a couple of
different verbs. For example, the characters may be speaking in a room, all
in different
positions and as such require a couple of different verbs with different
settings. The
problem (or potential problem) is that in order to create the scene
properly, I'm doing a
fair amount of tweaking on the reverbs and the number of verb styles starts
to grow semi
exponentially as the scenes/multiple voices start to add up.
With 7-10 different scenes all requiring different reverb arrangements, I am
faced with the
possibility of:
a) racking up a bunch of sends and a large handful of verb channels
alongside a bunch
of automation.
b) Mixing in sections, bouncing, then moving on. This method along with
saving would
allow me to re use the same verb channels and lighten the automation load
but would
make revises and recall more difficult.
It seems there are other permutations of these models so I was curious what
your
thoughts on the best way to go about this.
I like the idea of having everything in one session with instantaneous and
total recallability
but it seems like a trade off between this and the inherit sluggish and some
times glitchy
nature of a heavily loaded session.
I'm running logic 7.1, on a dual 2.5G5 with protocols HD3 and an RME
fireface for
coreaudio.
Your thoughts, strategies would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the input. I may just have to hold my breath and get my

You might benefit from using early reflections only for the multitudes of
tracks and mixing them all with a more generic tail. For example, if you
tweak the early reflections right and eliminate the verb tails from your
algorithms, you'll be able to define the size, type and position of the
sound but not have the CPU overhead of having to process the tails. Once you
have your positional information dialed in, then you can send each track to
a few busses which have more generic tails, automate the size and decay and
then mix those tails with the early reflection tracks to create a larger
reverb sound but with a large selection of positioned sounds.
I do this all of the time in larger mixes and not only is it a more
efficient use of system resources, but the results are often more realistic
and dynamic than multiple reverb busses. I learned this trick a long time
ago in making sounds for games where the use of in-game reverbs made the
sound horrible due to the inability to create good reverbs from low resource
DSP. I would burn in the early reflections into the sound samples and use
the less than ideal system verbs for just the tails. It worked well in some
cases, works much better now that we have more resources for DSP and the
ability to position stereo samples.
Give it a shot!

Hi Erik,
Thanks for your interest, but I loaded a few old sessions this morning &
it's happening with them too, so hopefully it's not my autoload
pd
Had the same problems. Tried everything.
Finaly upgrading from 10.3 to Tiger was the solution for me.
Goodluck.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I had the same problem with 7.1 (on Tiger)
Almost made the switch to PtoTools (after 10 years Logic),
but now I don't have to take that step back.
It's a shame you can't contact apple for problems like this.
BTW. You don't have to arm the tracks, just selecting one of the 32 set will
do.
Same counts for track 65-96 etc.
Hope with next update TDM DSP usage is available again.
You realy made my day!!!
If you feel so inclined, try this:
Pan an audio TDM track hard left or right. Send it via a stereo bus
to a stereo aux. On that stereo aux instantiate a Reverb plug. In my
case Revibe. Make sure it is 100% wet.
Turn up the send from the audio track.........................listen
as it pans to center.............WTF!!!
Now try it without a plug at all. Listen as it pans to
centre..................WTF!!!
I was wondering why I was hearing phase when sending. It's driving me
nuts.
Please tell me it doesn't happen on your TDM rig.
I think I'll go to bed now.
Phil Buckle.
Tiger update has seemed to fix it- for me also, but I am still
installing software.
Whether it was HD corruption or a bug in 10.3.x I dont know

For mono TDM tracks, choose "Post Pan" in the sends menu, that
should fix
it. "Post" on stereo tracks is after panning.

The Waves plugins work flawlessly here all of them (Platinum), both
native and TDM. I use them extensively.

I have (2) Digi 888/24's and want to have 16 channels of I/O with
Logic Pro 7.0.1.
Since Core Audio will only support 8 channels, is there a way to have
Core Audio control
the first 888 and Direct TDM (DAE) control the second?
I keep getting a "hardware in use" error when launching with Core
Audio and DAE as
drivers.
I'll continue to search this group and others, but if anyone can help
out . . . .

Not using your digi hardware via coreaudio. Your I/O boxes are attached to
your protools
cards so essentially, they are going to be hijacked by the digidesign
coreaudio driver if the
coreaudio driver is selected. Under this config, you will only have access
to 8 outs. If you
want to use 16outs, select just the DAE/TDM drivers and NOT the coreaudio
driver. Your
DTDM tracks will feed the into ESB busses which give you the first eight
outs on the DTDM
side of things. DAE tracks can utilize the other eight outs.

Thanx so much for the help sonecabravo . . . .
Your suggestion was helpful in getting the Logic software instruments to
playback thru
TDM.
But . . . I have yet to get my second 888/24 to work in OSX (10.3.9) . . .
even in Pro Tools!
Digidesign says:
"Digidesign CoreAudio Driver will provide up to 16 channels of I/Owith
Pro Tools|24MIX."
But then they say:
"For Pro Tools TDM systems with more than one card and multiple I/O's,
only the primary
I/O connected to the first core card can be used with CoreAudio."
Gimme a break! Which is it?
Can I use my second 888/24 in OSX or not?
My rig:
G4/800/1GB RAM
Digi Mix Plus 24 (2 cards)
(2) Digi 888/24
Yamah 02R w/ (2) 8-channel AES cards to the 888's
Pro Tools 6.4.1
Logic 7.0.1
DAE 6.4.1
CoreAudio driver 6.5.2 (also tried 6.4.1)
Guess I'll be staying in OS 9 after all . . . . just wish I could Logic 7
there.
ANY HELP APPRECIATED!

Unless you add a native audio interface, you should not use Core Audio with
TDM.
Turn off the Core Audio driver and use DAE to drive your 888¹s and DTDM
through ESB for your native stuff.
Also, 7.1 is way more stable than 7.0.1, adds features and fixes bugs, so
you should buy that very inexpensive upgrade.
Also, run the Pro Application Updater 3, a free download from Apple that
fixes more bugs. If you search this archive, the link is listed in a recent
message.

well, if you're having problems with even protools, I would say you should
trash your digi
prefs and get your interfaces set up and working properly through protools.
You will have
no problem setting up 2 interfaces here.
Just so you understand the relationship (sorry if I sound like a
kindergarten teacher),
coreaudio is only used when 3rd party apps want to use digi hardware and
don't have a
direct DAE/TDM driver e.g ableton live, reason, finder, etc
The reason for your original conflict "digi hardware is already in
use" came from the
coreaudio drivers in logic trying to access digi hardware at the same time
as the DAE/TDM
drivers in logic trying to access the hardware.
Protools doesn't use the coreaudio system to talk to digi hardware, it has a
direct driver
link that bypasses coreaudio all together. Logic gives you the option of
either/or. If you
access digi hardware from logic using coreaudio, you are going to be
restricted to the 8
outs (essentially you are just using the digi i/o as a breakout box). If
you access the digi
hardware from within logic using the DAE/TDM drivers, you are hitting it
directly and
bypassing coreaudio thus allowing you full access to all of the digi
hardware (pci cards,
888, and digi routing prefs.
So, without making things too complicated, get your 2 interfaces running in
protools (start
over by trashing your digi prefs and going through the i/o setup process
again).
Once you've done this, stay away from the coreaudio driver in logic, just
use the DAE/TDM
drivers and you should be able to route any DAE track in a logic session to
any of the 16
outputs. Remember that your DTDM tracks must be routed through ESB busses
and you
are limited to 8. this is why I usually use the first 8 outputs for ESB and
route other misc
DAE tracks throught the remaining 8 outs.
You can access your digi hardware setup menu from within logic by opening
Audio-Audio
window-options- digidesign.
Good luck!
Hi All,
has anyone else had the TDM DSP Usage Greyed out under 10.4.2/Logic 7.1?
TDM Setup Indicator is selected under Audio Drivers.
What is going on?
JR
Yes, old bug in the Logic-Tiger combo.
Maybe Apple will fix it with the next update,
which will arrive any year now.
