So you actually runs logic 6.3.2 on Panther using which DAE?
Don't you have problems with distortion on the ESB channels?

It is possible, and it does work, provided you prepare in advance.
Multiple drives or
partitions is by far the way to go.
The usual caveats about plug-in authorizations, etc., under OS X
apply. Read the FAQs
for more info.
I use two separate partitions for OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) and OS X 10.3
(Panther), inasmuch
as Mix Plus systems are not yet supported with Panther. A separate
internal drive is
used for streaming Giga (and other in-house) samples into EXS24 TDM.
In my two or three days' experience with 6.3.2 and Panther, though,
it seems to work
alright, with the odd result that Logic crashes upon Quit (not a big
deal, IMHO, as I've
got a longer attention span these days).

There is most definitely a TDM version. As I said, I can get it working
in Logic and ProTools under OS 9, and in ProTools under OS X, but not
Logic under OS X.

Hi Dave -
What do you mean by EXS24 TDM? I thought EXS24 only works on Audio
Instrument channels and uses ESB to get to the TDM channels. Am I missing
something - is there an EXS that inserts right into a TDM channel?
Thanks,

Yes!
You can instanciate EXS24 on a AUX channel in the TDM mixer.

Hi,
If u have ESB and EXS24 you can open EXS on a TDM Aux Channel, without
having to detour thru a DTDM Track.

Where DTDM won´t work when you don´t have ESB. ;-)

The advantage to the TDM EXS24s is that they're in addition to the 64
regular ones, so you have more inputs into the TDM mixer.

I managed to get rid of it by removing the Host TDM extension. It
wasn't properly authorized and it was giving me a "critical error"
on
startup. Anyway, I decided I wasn't going to need it, got rid of it and
all of the sudden my pointer worked again.

Hello all,
Has anyone managed to get rid of the 'unexpectedly chrashed' message
Logic gives when quitting in 6.3.2, OSX 10.3.1, PT 6.2.2, G5 d2g?
Any suggestions would be good... have already rebuilt autoload,
dumped prefs / repaired privs etc.
Hi everybody
At the moment I'm working on a QS 867 w Mix3 and OS9 (and Logic). I was
about to upgrade to PTHD, but now I find myself in a situation where I
wish to become a lot more flexible, I´m probably gonna need two setups
and ultimately I wanna be able to work only on a laptop which I can
jack out at one place and bring to the other without having to convert
sessions between native and TDM. I'm thinking of replacing my PT system
with one of these DSP equipped, 0% processorload soundcards, and also a
UAD-1 and a TC Powercore FW (so I can use some of my favourite plugs)
combined with an as powerfull powerbook there is, and a G5.
issues:
-CPU load: At the moment I'm allready working a lot with instruments in
Direct TDM, using the brilliant "freeze" function and I suppose
there
wouldn't be much difference in a native setup, except much more power
with a G5.
-Track counts: from what I've heard I should be able to run about a 100
tracks, BUT: does the new RME DSP cards or Metric-Halo DSP interfaces
really don't use any CPU power at all? Any other recommendations?
-Plug-ins: I know I won't be able to use Virus and a couple of other
plugs, but I can live with that. What about the UAD-1 and TC Powercore
FW, do they work well? I know they got some latency, but that doesn't
seem like a big problem to me, since I'm used to compensating for that
in ProTools anyway.
-Sound quality: Some people say ProTools sounds better, but
theoretically, shouldn't it be the same really? I mean it's all
digital... and most of the plugs are the same. Can anybody spread a
little light here please? If PT sounds better, I would like to know
why, and if there is a working method in a native setup that would
optimize the sound quality, like doing small mixdowns with less CPU
load rather than adding all the signals at once in a big mix.
Feel: does the computer become really sluggish when you do your last
vocal takes way past family dinner time?
Stability: Will it run for days without inexplicable crashes?
So what do you guys think, anybody tried a switch like this yet? happy?
Well, suppose I shouldn't ask on the TDM list :-), but there is no
exTDM list (yet).
What I feel are the Main advantages with a native setup are:
-quicker startups and switches between sessions
-only one Core Audio mixer so I can keep the plugin format, tracks etc.
when I bring up sessions in my Powerbook.
-mix and match stereo formats and bit depths
-economy
-bright future
All the best / Henrik
Still in OSX I'm experiencing the problem with EXS-24 I've been ranting
about before in OS9. It doesn't load files if you put over a certain
amount of files in the Sampler Instruments folder. Some people have
been suggesting this is a Mac OS limitation, any light on this, anybody?
Thanks / Henrik
I heard a rumor that Space Designer would be around the $1600 here in

Well the biggest problem I've found going Native is that you can't use
ProTools software in a lot of scenarios.......ie Powercore and Metric Halo
are 2 I
know of......On a 1.6 G5 CPU resources get used up really quickly-especially
with a few soft synths and the wonderful SpaceDesigner.Freeze is cool -but
it
takes time and cuts down on the "flow"And latency is still an
issue. The setting
of 128 for the Logic buffer that i need to be happy in terms of latency is
way smaller than the large number that TC works recomends on their website
for
optomizing their card -2 thousand something as i recall.
I guess you can use the smaller number when you record and switch to the
higher one when you mix, but I haven't got that far yet.ie. I'm waiting for
the
PowerCore to be delivered as we speak. That said-If you don't push it too far
Logic Native is quite remarkable and certainly points the way for the
future.

Hi -
Has anyone received the error message from Logic "Too many controls
need to
be updated"?
I was mixing down a simple session tonite with a few audio tracks using
simple automation of volume only - but the session was long, around 60
minutes. At 50 minutes into the mix Logic stopped and gave an error box
with the above message and no other details. The preallocation length of
the record file was set to 68 minutes. The resulting sound file was OK up
to around 30 minutes, then had random silent segments of a minute or two
each, until the point where it stopped completely.
System: OS X 10.2.6, Logic 6.3.1, Pro Tools 6.1, PowerMac G4 Dual 1G, !G
RAM
Any ideas of what this problem is?
Thanks,
David
I believe it's $495.00 in catalogue

I acted on the advice of Peter at "PS.Musik" and I think I've
gotten to
the bottom of my slow Logic problems in OSX.
It's the autoload that I've been using for years
This autoload also came across from OS9. So I made a new one and that
problem of the jerky editing disappeared straight away.
So it's worth noting that the Autoload can get corrupted.
Thanks for the tip Peter.

ProTools LE and ProTools TDM software can only be used with
Digidesign hardware.
Digidesign made very sure that PT LE couldn't use any 3rd
party DSP assistance or audio i/o because that would take
sales away from their high end TDM rigs.

Yes, it's an OS X limitation. I don't know whether Emagic is
addressing it, but you'll see third-party solutions shortly.

If FXpansion releases the VST-->RTAS adaptor this will change.
They say they have tested the Powercore and UAD-1 converted RTAS plugs
in PT 6 with success.

I don't have any ideas based on experience of any similar problem, but
the circumstances would lead me to look at an overloaded memory system.
How long had it been since the computer was restarted before the
session ? Had you been running ProTools at the same time as Logic since
the last restart ?
In OS X Virtual memory is an integral part of the memory management
system. VM works on a system of Swap Files. During any up-time period,
if the memory system has a lot of demands placed upon it, the number
of swap files can grow, from bits of what is being stored in RAM being
'paged out' to VM.
If you start getting to many page-outs, and too many swap files,
performance can suffer to the point where memory-intensive tasks can
start to fail. Especially if they are prioritized to run in real time,
as is the case with a lot of DAW operations.
Normally this is not a situation you would encounter very often on a
system such as yours, but I have observed that running two DAWs
together, at the same time, can grow the number of swap files fairly
quick. [I'm talking hours and days, not minutes, so I'm not suggesting
not to do it, just be aware of the consequences and act accordingly]
Anyway, swap files don't go away when you shut down the apps. they
persist till you reboot the computer.
If my guess is right, or in any case, I can recommend a handy utility
called MemoryStick, which you can find on versiontracker or macupdate.
It's worth getting for the memory management tutorial in it's help
file, alone. MemoryStick will give you an indicator on your desktop, so
that when the memory system is getting overloaded, you can pick an
opportune time to restart the computer.
I hope this helps,
Dave Eager
