Merry Xmas,
don't you think it's better not to let in DUC's "ProTools

I find DUC and other lists becoming more and more aggressive....

Not on a Mac. They're working on CoreAudio (OS X) drivers for it, but
no Mac ASIO driver. There's a Windows ASIO driver, but that's only to
use it as a sound card - the control surface is only for Pro Tools LE.

Hi -
I'm going to try something I haven't done, and hope I won't run into
problems.
I've scored a short film and have agreed to mix music dialog and sfx in my
writing room. I've decided to do it in Logic, as I am getting rusty with
ProTools. So I have he following concerns:
* importing OMF-the audio for the project will come to me as an OMF from
Finall Cut. I did a small test, and it seems to work fine in a small test.
* Surround mixing-just set up a 5.1 environment in my writing room, and hope
that this will not make for problems. I will work only with audio files, not
MIDI, or soft synths in this final assembly and mix file.
* QT Video - I've put my digitized video on both fast SCSI and fast FW
drives. They seem about the same to me on my system. the problem that comes
up is this-after a while the video starts to slow down to just a few frames
per second. I am careful not to overlap the movie indow over any scrolling
windows, and still it slows down. One thought is this - if I work entirely
in TDM it will not tax the CPU and slow down the video. Yes?
Any experiences, good or bad, are appreciated.

Last time I worked on a surround mix in Logic I had problems with bus
sends mysteriously changing from post fader to pre fader. Once the bus
send was "tweaked" it would revert back to post fader operation.
Very
disconcerting as I could not predict when this would happen. I haven't
tried a surround mix for a few months now so maybe this situation has
improved in Logic. I believe I noticed this when 5.1 and 5.2 were
around.

Jeff, do yourself a favour and get a second (older) Mac and put Virtual
VTR in it. It works like a charm. Say goodbye to all PCI bus problems
and drift and low rez images. And now that Logic sends out continuous
MMC it's even better.

I'm working with tdm, logic and quicktime movies on top of logic;
everything is working great, and timing is perfect.
Slowing down happens when usign DTdm tracks with esb, but the timing is
still good, with some lost frames.
I'm running movie from the same Hd where i keep audio tracks (
internal Ide 80mb,7200 rpm).
My advice is to compress movie using sorenson video( best quality with
small data rate), and not to use mpeg 1 video, that can cause freeze
audio.

Take a look at Logics Audio Hardware prefs. Under DAE, You might have 64
tracks mode enabled. Logic does that for You, when You start with a new
prefs file.
Good luck,

Hello
I have ES2 running through DTDM / ESB, and since doing the
v5.5 update it seems to take ages for the preset list to appear
having clicked on the little down arrow. I dont think it did this in
v5.3.
This is a bit of a pain - anyone got a work around? I dont think
you can assign a key command to previous/next preset either...
Thanks
Matt
Two things.
1) If I do not select sample accurate automation preference in Logic
I get up to one second delay between what I draw in the arrange and
what I'm actually hearing coming off my PTHD. Unless I'm doing
something wrong here, how can this even be an OPTION?
2) When a selection loops back to the start, the automation data
wont chase unless I place an automation node at the start of the loop
selection. Basically the automation does not chase on loop only on
normal play. I feel like I'm back in the old ADAT days here. What am
I doing wrong?
The midi automation in 4.0 never had these sync and chase issues that
I'm having now. And it is kind of scary to think I'm sitting on about
30 000 EURO of basic soft and Hardware and have the feeling that I
really cant trust all this stuff to do EXACTLY what I ask it to......
Any help much appreciated
Peter
Hi all
Folks using Logic with the PTHD extension: have any of the faults
that were initially reported been sorted out?
What's the verdict at this stage, does HD work well with Logic? as
well as Mix does?

Yep.

VST support was/is there in the OS 9 version of Logic, yes. That works.
It is a misunderstanding however to assume that because it works in OS 9
that it automatically works in the OS X version of Logic and that
somehow they could've included its support without any work.
Simply put - both would have required development.
Now as to why they would drop VST support......this has been mentioned
numerous times before - the documentation for *host* developers (as
distinct from plugin developers) was never complete and Emagic
apparently had to figure many things out by experimentation. Steinberg
as a competitor would always want VST to work better in Steinberg
products than anyone elses whereas Apple wants AU to work just as good
in any application. Also developers on this list have stated that things
will be better with AU...
> will it ever work,
with VST - I doubt it.
> are there any work arounds??
Using AU.
Actually I'd imagine that because of the way that OS X works and thus
Logic, that any app that could act as a midi port to Logic (i.e., so you
can send from logic midi messages and receive messages back) that an
external app that supports VSTi could do the trick...

Consult your manuals regarding OMF import and export.
It's a long story that depends on a few factors at the Logic end and
the ProTools end of things.

Hello everybody :) I know that I am on the TDM list (I use a TDM rig

here,thank you very much
I usually use my PB G4 800 (OS 9.2.2) with the Emagic EMI 2/6 with no
problems.Actually,i am far away from home and i need to finish my
edits with Logic Audio in MAC AV mode before going back to studio and
finish the record:But as soon as I press play the computer freeze
(with only audio files, even with one audio file !)
I tried trashing the preferences, changing the memory settings...
with no results !
Did anybody experienced the same problem here ?
Can you enlighten me,the stress is growing !
Thank you very much !

Hey Folks, Merry Christmas.
So I have PTHDIII. WHen I first installed the hardware worked fine until I
started getting "TDM Ribbon not connected" Messages. These
persisted
regardless of reinstalling the hardware. Interestingly, if I ran digitest
the
whole system would boot fine even though a card would fail. So, eventually,
after exhausting every possibility Digi took the card back and replaced it.
It worked for a few months and now is doing exactly the same thing
again!-When rebooting I HAVE to run digitest or the software thinks a cable
is faulty. Any ideas? Peace and thanks......Lon
i was with a music editor friend talking about hard drives. my removable
SCSI drives (Glyph) are misbehaving, and I was thinking of getting off of
SCSI alltogether and going with FireWire instead. he still uses SCSI for
online drives and a FireWire drive for back ups. He bought this cool
enclousure from Granite Digital - a removable FireWire drive bay that you
can buy any IDE drive, pop it into the removable 'pod' and use it with an
Oxford 911 chipset, etc.
So we ran the ATTO disk benchmark on his intermal Mac drive, SCSI drive,
and the removable FireWire drive. Well, the internal Mac drive was the
fastest by far - not a big surprise. But the Slowest was the SCSI drive,
about 10% slower than the FireWire drive. This WAS a surprise, as he claims
to have played ProTools sessions on the SCSI that wouldn't play on the FW
without slow disk DAE errors.
i'm probably a bit less demanding than him sa far as tracks and drives go
- he'll play back dozens of tracks at 96K. what is the conventional wisdom
here?

I'm using internal ATA drives on my DP mirrored door Mac (which has
three ATA busses, one for removables, an ATA 100 bus and an ATA 66
bus). You can put four HD's in these machines, and I added three 120
GB WD1200JB's (jumbo 8 MB cache). They work very well. I'm also
Granite Digital enclosures with WD800JB's, and they also work very
well. The PT HD cards are enormously improved in PCI bus handling,
and I never get any of the -6042 error problems I used to get with my
old Mix system when mixing data from different busses. So far, I have
yet to really torture test this system. At this point, I can't
imagine any need for SCSI with the type of work I do.
Keep in mind that the next generation of Macs will probably have the
1394b 800 mbps Firewire, using drives with the Oxford 922 bridge.
As far as slow performance with Firewire goes, you might run into
some issues with drives that are really loaded up with data.
Personally, even though I've got big drives, I spread my sessions out
between different drives and don't leave insane amounts of data from
completed projects on my drives, so they're never that full. I've got
close to a Terrabyte of storage on line (drives are so damned cheap
these days), and that's a LOT of storage. I can't remember my
calculations exactly, but I figured it out once that an 80 GB drive
running in a 48k 24 bit system could store the equivalent of about 28
reels of 24 track 2 inch tape running at 30 ips. That's a LOT, and I
don't think most of us are that prolific.
In my book, once you've filled your Mac up with ATA drives, high
quality Granite Digital enclosures with Western Digital drives (with
the JB, jumbo cache suffix) are the ticket. BTW, www.newegg.com
always seems to have great prices on WD drives.
