Like new?... does that mean that all the knobs is working without any
noise??.. Any wear on the graphics?... Has it been to any service lately?...
Does it need to be calibrated?... Has it seen much use?...
Hm... I don´t like ebay...
Modularmoog.
German Emagic support told me:
> A) Will ESB work with the HD extension?
Yes it does.
> B) Will it be limited to 44.1/48k?
I didn't ask this because I'm personally not interested
in 96k or higher.
> C) will it be compatible with the new 48 bit TDM mixer?
Yes it will.
Besides this, here's another good news for Mix-users:
since Logic 5.1.3 the TDM Dithered Mixer 24 BIT 5.1.1
is working with Logic! :-)

Stephan,
I put this under a new heading, as I think it's important info for a lot of
TDM users. Thanks for the tip, and the other info.

That´s indeed good news.
I´ve been using the DAG mixer for some months now.
I´ll try the dithered Digi mixer and I´m curious how they
differ...

According to Emagic, The 48 bit HD mixer runs on 5.1.3 with the HD
extension. The HD extension runs all the way to 192, and ESB SHOULD run all
the way to 192K since the native engine is prepared to handle sample rates
that high. I'm one of those people making the upgrade to HD before the
30th, and I'm confident that all will be well with the HD extension.

Thanks Kenn (and Stefan). I think we're in good shape.

Hi
I'm looking for a studio in Leeds (UK) where I can record vocals. I need a
good vocal booth and a good channel strip. That's it. I'm bringing my
ProTools and a Powrbook. 6 - 9 days in mid August. Anybody? (sorry about
the OT)
Please answer me privately henrik@...
Thanks Henrik
Any tips on how to get soft synths (eg Absynth) to run IN TIME
using Direct connect in Logic?
For some reason when I do this I always have to shift the midi
track back 15-20 ms
Thanks

I'm using the dag mixer and its great! I have a friend using protools
without logic, and he has problems with sends bleading and busses
cross talking. But I do not encounter this in logic. The dag mixer
does use more dsp, though so does the dithered mixer.

Hi Gang
Has anyone any knowlege of which is the most stable version of Logic
currently working with Surround Dolby 5.1 (before version LAPM 5 came
along) using a G4 and Firewire etc?
Also has anyone any experience of actually using our illustrious system
in a surround context yet? (Particularly in movie land.) As yet I have no
experience of 5.1 with TDM/Logic software (having in a previous
reincarnation done Dolby 4.1 with traditional multi track tape and desk)
and am perilously near bringing back some orchestral sessions to my
studio which I will be then mixing with samplecell stuff using Logic with
TDM . I know many folk like to use ProTools for this but I will be
using Logic at the front end.
Is the Dolby TDM plug-in absolutely vital or unecessary because Dolby 5.1
works with discreet channels?
Any handy hints very greatfully received!
Many many thanks in anticipation
Richard
I´ve never had crosstalk and bleeding with any mixer plugin.
Are you sure the problems weren´t in the analog domain?

Two issues that I know of:
1. There is no elegant way to play back a multi (more than stereo) track
file inside Logic, unlike ProTools. That may be moot if you are using Logic
only with mono and stereo sources to create a 5.1 mix. Your 4.1 source will
have to be treated as 2 stereo (LR and LsRs) and one mono (LFE) source. You
would have to do this in ProTools as well if you wanted to to redirection
(like pull some of the LR into the centre channel).
2. There is a bug when one assigns an aux instrument to a 5.1 output. Bus
sends will change to prefader sender unexpectedly. I have noticed this
behaviour in 4.8 to 5.0. I haven't tried this out in 5.1.3 yet. Anyone else
care to pipe in?

If you need to deliver discrete then you don't need a plugin. Are you
referring to an AC3 or DTS encoding? Then those are audiosuite
(non-realtime) anyway.

Yes, same here - DAG mixer, no such problems. Those don't sound
like 'digital' problems fwiw.

Dear gang
Whilst you guys are out there running at the front, I'm staying back with
my 9600/300 for a mo whilst doing a project using Logic Audio 4.8.1
(which I use as opposed to using Protools because lots of midi stuff and
have never really spent any time with Protools software up front) Still
using PT24 mix plus, DAE 5.0. 2 X samplecell cards/ Ixmicro dual
monitor card & 888/24. Still with OS 8.6, I'm trying to get a Dolby 5.1
system as painlessly as possible.
Has anyone out there used the TDM Dolby matrix simulator with Logic
..... if so how do you insert it in the master outputs? Although many
cinemas are coming around to 5.1 very quickly, the dolby consultants
still like the music checked on a 4.1 simulator because half the planet
still watches with that format!
I need a firewire drive with more space and quicker xfer because
recording 24bit and so am taking out my old Adaptec UW accelerator and
replacing with Firewire/USB Pci card. Any suggestions/issues as to which
card?
Best wishes
Richard

Good news, I guess, but isn't all that's required here an authorization
code??

I would assume that it's another extension that needs to be placed in
the Logic folder, plus the authorization code. One would think that
in this day and age, this could be sold over the internet, and we
could all have it now.
Then again, maybe it sounds better if it comes in a box.

From the Emagic announcement:

Thinking more about the logistics of this...
If the package shows up for me during the first week of July, my
local trash haulers can cart the box and packing off to the recycling
plant on Monday, July 8 (Monday is my trash pick-up day).
If, however, it shows up during the second week of July, my trash guy
(who has been eagerly anticipating this box) won't get his hands on
it until July 15.
I guess I'll just have to tell him to be patient.
Don't they have any kind of conservation movement in Germany? To get
these packages to the US, I imagine they're packed in large boxes.
Then, when they reach the distributors in various countries, they're
packed up in smaller boxes and sent to dealers. If the dealers are
mail order houses, they then repackage the software and send it to
individual purchasers. All this waste of packaging and transportation
for something that could be sent securely and they don't even hav
over the internet in a few seconds. Lots of companies are doing this,
and they don't have the security of the XSKey.
What a colossal waste of time and resources.

Well, I know I'll take heat for this but...
I've used Logic since 2.x and love it. I am however angry to find out the HD
extension is $500. This seems a ridiculous amount to pay for the priviledge
of being able to use Emagics program that I allready own with my hardware.
I'm not aware of such a tax on any other hardware suppported by the program
including PT24. I'm sorry to see that Emagic's attitude is that if someone
can afford PTHD they should be willing to pay whatever for this extension.
I was going to NYC to buy a Logic Control and a Unitor 8 tomarrow. After
learning the price of the upgrade I've decided to learn protools instead. If
I can't stand it , at some point I'll fork over the dough for the HD
extension but for now, after many years, Emagic has lost me as a customer.
Yes I know there is a cost to software design but, frankly, I think this
price is obscene.-Lonny S. Jarrett

But as far as Logic goes, LAMP with the HD extension is the high-end
of the high-end. At 44.1/48k, that's 128 HD tracks plus whatever you
get from the native side. It's an awful lot of performance.
I guess I'm an old timer. I remember my Synclavier days when a simple
software update would cost $1k to $2k (and 10 MB hard drives cost
$10,000).
Try to think of that $500 compared to other things. You can blow that
much on sample CDs in not much time at all. I'm getting ready to set
up a GigaStudio or two, and that's $699 list for the software per
machine. Isn't the Waves Platinum Bundle about $3k now? What about
the cost of the HD EXT software compared to Sony Oxford? There are
plenty of PT plug-ins that are in the $500 or above range.
Personally, when I think of the depth, importance and centrality of
the software I use, there's nothing more important than Logic. No
other full-featured MIDI sequencer package has supported TDM hardware
as well as Logic (DP's support has always been iffy, SVP is defunct,
and Cubase support died at birth). Without Logic, we'd be dead in the
water.
Digidesign is making a handsome (and I think deserved) profit on HD
systems. Emagic is putting in a lot of work to support it, and they
should get some reward for it.
Of all the companies I'd like to see remain healthy, Emagic is at the
top of the list. Dang it, I don't want to go through another fiasco
like the one I went through when Gibson bought Opcode and ran it into
the ground. I want to spend more of my life making music, and less of
my life coming up to speed with deep software that comes with huge
manuals.
BTW, Logic support IS graduated into a number of distinct categories,
and for quite some time, you do pay for support of higher end
hardware. To use Logic with non-HD PT, for example, you need to use
the Platinum version. Below that, you've got the Gold, Silver and Tin
versions.
Perhaps Emagic's miscalculation here is that they should have
introduced a totally new version with extra features and assigned a
new metal name to it, rather than making the new product seem to be a
blatant tax on HD users. What metal would that be? Titanium? Uranium?
Plutonium?
I wish you luck with PT, Lonny. I've got my HD system sitting here in
boxes, and I had a bit of a break in my schedule. Anxious to get the
new equipment running, I was contemplating switching over and
toughing it out in PT until the HD EXT arrived, and tried doing a
typical session in PT to see how I'd get by. PT is a great
streamlined application that's easy to learn and absolutely perfect
for some people/applications, but for the way I compose and use a
sequencer, it would be a GIGANTIC step backwards. If it was the only
application left on earth, I'd use it, but with Logic available,
there's no contest (especially with the automation in version 5).
BTW, considering the enormous improvements made in version 5, versus
4.x, I thought $149 for that upgrade was extremely reasonable.
I sleep better knowing that Emagic is probably doing OK financially
(and not inexorably slipping into bankruptcy like Opcode was). Those
were not happy times for me.
We need Emagic to keep going. That means their customer base is going
to look like a pyramid. The biggest bunch of people need to get in at
the bottom at a very cost-effective price. The higher up the pyramid
you go, the more features you get and the more hardware you need
supported, the more you pay.
All that being said, if Emagic sold us the HD EXT without all the
boxes, shipping and handling, I'll bet they could knock a few bucks
off the price. ;-)
Lee Blaske
Lonny,
I tend to agree. I will pay, because I really have no choice.(pt is not even
an option to me)
I've been with this program since the creator/notator days and find myself
on
the fence.
here's some of my thoughts
the price of the extension is about 2/3's the price of the entire program.
did they spend 2/3's the amont of time developing the extension as it took
to
develope the program?
I think the pricing for the extension should be more in line with the price
difference between Logic plat. and the next level down. ...and most
importantly.
....IF IM GOING TO SPEND $500 CAN THERE PLEASE BE NO WORK AROUNDS!!!!!
CAN I PLEASE HAVE ALL THE PLUGS BEHAVE EXACTLY LIKE THEY DO IN PROTOOLS
WITH ALL THEIR FEATURES USABLE
