How about this for a workaround - hold down the record button and toggle
'auto input monitoring"...

It's so strange to forget about these odd things. From years of running a
native rig and having this whole thing be so intuitive that I never had to
think about it, then moving to a TDM system and all of a sudden going, huh?
and never bothering to pick up a manual to figure what those monitoring
options really meant. I just got into the habit of actually going into
record to set up an input level and not bothering to work out the smart way
of doing it.

I guess tape is truly dead. My old Otari had input monitor settings per
track! You could punch in/out band members (remember those?) one instrument
at a time on the fly. Of course, you had to be careful not to screw it up!
Input monitoring is something those old ADAT folks can tell you about too,
if any are still alive.

I don't think I can live with this limitation. Why can't Emagic make a
program that knows when I want to hear my guitar instead of what's on
"tape"?

That´s the standard behaviour I know (like on ProTools, Adats, tape

Thanks for all the responses. There has to be a setting that takes care of
this so
that Auto input monitoring does not have to be toggled.
Do you guys use logic as the front end or do you sequence in logic and do
all audio
in PT and not have to worry about this?
I do Rap music and have to edit out explicit words is in song. I found that
doing
this in PT was actually more work that in logic, PLEASE correct me if I am
not doing
something right but here is how it works in Logic for me and PT:
Logic:
Open wave, find word by clicking up top without having to select a
"tool" click on
the area, hit reverse and done!
PT:
Wave form is already there, choose scrubber find word, loose my place while
going up
to get selector tool, highlight an area by guessing where I was, go back and
get
scrubber to verify, go back and get selector and mark area. Choose capture
region(in
logic you just hit reverse and keep moving and you are offered the choice to
back
up) and then hit reverse. Now you have to go the audio are on the right and
pull
this audio back into the waveform area (hoping that you put it exactly where
it
goes) and there you are!
PLEASE tell me what I am doing or not doing to make this easier. I am new to
PT
(5.1.3 is the version I have) and bought it thinking that I was supposed to
be so
great. I am sure that it is and that I am just missing something that you
guy
already know to make this quicker.
Please help me as I did not see anything in my 4.2 Mix Plus manual that
touched on
this(original system was 4.2 with upgrade to 5.1.3)
Also, how do you get the allocator program. I did not find it on my 5.1 or
5.1.3 CD?
Thanks
Bobby
Thanks for all the responses. Peter yours was the first that I saw, so your
message
did get through and I surely appreciate it. However, there has to be a
setting that

as this
does not have to be done in native. Maybe it is just one of those things if
logic
offers TDM or DAE as an engine it shoud be a "free flowing" as
ASIO.

Allocator is now a part of the PT application. Ols Allocator App should work
with logic.
Pete
Bobby,
I don´t think I understand what you mean (can you explain how the
monitoring
works with ASIO? Don´t you hear the track vs. the input when playing
there?).
IMO Auto Input Monitoring works as it should, and to me it´s no hassle
to
toggle it when I need to.
BTW: What do you mean with "reverse"? Delete?

I think I remember Cubase 4 having a "tape monitor" mode, and you
could click on/off each channel. I looked around for that in Logic
when I first got my TDM system up and running. I've now settled for
turning Auto Input Monitoring off, and record-enabling each channel I
need to hear.
By the way, that's a real drag when you want to enable many channels.
Is there a shortcut? It'd be REAL handy if channels saved their rec
states in Autoload.

I grabbed the old Allocator plug from Digi's site, and installed it
in the DAE folder. But everywhere I try to instantiate it inside
Logic, it's grayed out. How does one actually use it? :)

You don´t need to put it in the DAE folder. It´s an application
you start by

This isn't a plugin, it's a stand-alone application that
tells you how much DSP horsepower is being used up
on the TDM cards. It doesn't need to be installed anywhere
particular.
The Allocator has been discontinued by Digidesign. Instead,
it is built inside PT software since PT5. Luckily, that old
stand-alone application still works with Logic and DAE 5.x.
It probably will NOT work with the new PT HD hardware,
but what the hell do I know?

That's why! LOL..
I knew what it was, just not how to use it. Running it now. It
actually shows available RAM and disk space too. Pretty cool. Funny
thing was, it actually showed up in the DAE plug-ins menus. :)
Thanks!

Dear all,
I have recently installed the ESB using LAP 4.7.2 and Mixplus
hardware but now im stuck !!! The TDM environment side was setup
for me when I got the gear but now Im really in trouble!!
1) How do you setup native tracks , say 24.
2) And virtual instruments ??
3) Also I only appear to have 4 aux channels, is that right ??
I know I have to setup some stuff in the environment but I would
greatly appreciate some help, or if someone could direct me to a
website for this info.
Many thanks in advance.

Hi Mary. I am talking about using Logic, for all this. I don't
think ESX-24 TDM functions in PT currently (I could be wrong).

yes, and of course you'll have to use Logic's audio side also if you
want to access ESX-24
Good luck!

Copy or create a bunch of new objects (faders), and change the device
for those objects to DTDM in the parameter box to the left. There you
can also assign each object as an audio track, bus, aux, audio
instrument, whatever. In my environment I have a native mixer set up
underneath my TDM mixer.

See above.

The number of available auxes increases dynamically as you assign
more.

In your native mixer you will have eight possible outputs for each
object. In your TDM mixer, you can use aux channels as ESB inputs;
just instanciate mono or stereo ESB plugins on the first insert, and
in the plugin window assign which of the DTDM channels to receive
from.

I've just installed esb tdm; installation was succesfull, but the item esb
is visable (grey) but unselectable in my plug-inlist. DTDM and DAE are
selected in my hardware setup. I can select DTDM in an audio object, but
when I change a DAE audio object into a DTDM object, nothing happens (no
sound, no audio is coming in...)
When I put off DAE and DTDM and I switch on I/O I can select VST plug-ins
and I can hear a sound.
Does anybody knows what I have to do? I have re-installed esb tdm, without
succes.
There is also another problem: when I put on DTDM, my audio volumesettings
aren't correct anymore; I hear the audio volumechanges on other places than
I've drawned them. Without DTDM everything works fine.
My configuration: LAP 4.8.1, protools cube en g4/733 os 9.2 - 384 mb, 2x 18
giga externe harddisks, unitor 8 en amt 8
Thanks for helping me!

Wim,
I'm thinking you have it instanced on a track. This doesn't work. You need
to put it on an aux (or a bus).
