Digidesign is not going to sit back and watch MOTU, Metric Halo, Crest, TC Electronics, etc. steal the show. With Digi's current convertor technology growing a bit stale, I'm expecting to see better convertors, 96 khz, FireWire and a big advance in DSP bang-for-the-buck to keep them ahead of the pack. Don't expect to get much warning of a big change in the Digidesign product line-up. They're known for extremely tight security (frankly, I don't know how they do it). Also, in the case of Digidesign, hardware is usually available quite soon after the announcement. This makes sense, because a lengthy lead time would kill sales. >Anyhow, the system seems rock solid on a new G4 complete with a Fuse >video capture card: no PCI errors, DAE errors or crashes, running all >day with full count track, automation, dual monitor card and video playing. PT, being less graphic intensive, is easier on a G4 than running Logic. I'd be interested to hear how your system performs with an intensive Logic session (with video, lots of track edits, and lots of windows open). How is the display using the ProMax cards? Do redraws seem really fast? I've been curious as to why Digidesign seems so reluctant to approve it. Lee Blaske

Heard of the Dazzle Hollywood box (for video capture?) It's supposed to run through firewire. Someone selling PT systems told me about it. $300 & no PCI slot, but 1x rendering (2 hrs for a 1 hr video). Anyone try this? Er, don't you mean 0.5x rendering (if it takes double the amount of time of the length of the video)? Anyway, I can't see that being used in a pro context for long stuff (30 second commercials - no problem). Can you imagine if a studio needed to literally double its allotted time for transfering stuff from videotape to QuickTime? f-erenc szabo, smarty pants Z+E+R+O+B+E+A+T "NOW POWERED BY THE MIRACLE OF THE TRANSISTOR!"

Subject: Urgent
Message #6130
VERY URGENT The Brazilian congress is now voting on a project that will reduce the Amazon forest to 50% of its size. It will take 1 MINUTE to read this, but PLEASE put your names on the list and forward this on. The area to be deforested is 4 times the size of Portugal and would be mainly used for agriculture and pastures for livestock. All the wood is to be sold to international markets in the form of wood chips, by large multinational companies. The truth is that the soil in the amazon forest is useless without the forest itself. Its quality is very acidic and the region is prone to constant floods. At this time more than 160,000 square kilometers deforested with the same purpose are abandoned and in the process of becoming deserts. Deforestation (and the subsequent processing of the wood chips) on this scale will also release huge amounts of carbon (which is currently locked up in the wood) back into the atmosphere worsening the problem of climate change. We just cannot let this happen. Please copy the text into a 'new email' put your complete name in the List below, and send to everyone you know. (DON'T JUST FORWARD IT THOUGH AS IT WILL THEN END UP WITH ROWS AND ROWS OF >>>>'s. ) If you are the 300th person to sign please send a copy to: fsaviolo@... But I just happen to know the answer to your question: LAMP uses the Direct I/O driver (not DAE) with Digi001 hardware. f-erenc szabo, smarty pants Z+E+R+O+B+E+A+T "NOW POWERED BY THE MIRACLE OF THE TRANSISTOR!"

I always have edit window on 1 screen and mix window on the other: Especially good when writing automation, you can see whats coming up in the waveforms. I don't ever display the movie on the computer monitors: only on video output to regular monitor The sessions are fairly intense in terms of edits and automation etc. I do also use PT 5.1 feature to have more than 1 plugin window open at a time. The real drawback to the ProMax is lack of support for open GL. So when you've wrapped up the work for the day you can't play 3d games; [have you checked out ONI?] Peter

If you are going to get a new G4, I would get the dual processor, as Emagic supports these models. Somebody told me that it divides midi and plug in processing between the two chips, so you get better timing and response overall. I have a gig of ram in my G4 and it is great working with the EXS not having to worry, when loading huge orchestral sample libraries.. > From: René Evald <evald@...> > Reply-To: logic-tdm@yahoogroups.com > Date: Tue, 29 May 2001 09:23:57 +0200 > To: <logic-tdm@yahoogroups.com> > Subject: [L-TDM] New G4 > > I´m shopping for a new G4 and I need some advice on which to choose. > I´m considering the 533MHzdp, 667Mhz, 733MHz. > Does the dual processor have any advantages or should I go for the higher > speed? Also does anyone know a good place in the states >to purchase these? > >Thanks, Pete I'd suggest using both for a while - we use ESX-24 as an add-on to SC and it really makes a great system. ESX-24 is so cheap it's a win-win situation anyway even if you decide you prefer Samplecell for most of your work, and only use ESX-24 for those times that you run out of Samplecell memory. Then if you're in love with ESX-24 you can flog your SC card later. You'll want to up your 9600's RAM by at least another 128 though - but then there's a real bargain to be had for 9600s currently at http://eshop.macsales.com/Service/index.cfm?page=contact.html - around $40 for a 64Mb stick. If you buy the forthcoming Emagic System bridge then you can route ESX into TDM like you do with Samplecell. Subject: OT:ADSR envelope
Message #6137
I've sampled a grand piano with a very long natural decay before the loop. When I'm building a program in my AKAI S6000 I realize that this classic ADSR amp envelope isn't good enough. In for example my K2000 I can let the piano decay naturally until the loop and then let the envelope decay take over. In case of the ADSR envelope there is both the natural and the envelope decay that adds up, making the sound fade too fast. Am about to buy the EXS24, but as far as I know it also has nothing but an ADSR-env. In those basic envelopes there should be a delay parameter, before in this case the decay time... Any workarounds out there? Thanks in advance, Håkan Glänte

Subject: [ADMIN] LUG deal on PSP plugins, starting TODAY!
Message #6138
Hi, I'm glad to announce that the makers of PSP audioware ( http://www.pspaudioware.com ) have offered us a nice deal on their plugin packages! What's on offer: PSP MixPack and PSP StereoPack. Both packages are available for Mac and PC. PSP MixPack consists of: PSP MixBass, PSP MixSaturator, PSP MixPressor and PSP MixTreble. As the name of the collection suggests, the plug-ins which make up part of this series are specifically for use during sound mixing. However, the quality of the algorithms employed also allows them to be used in mastering. A demo version, as well as audio examples, can be downloaded here: http://www.pspaudioware.com/download1.html PSP StereoPack is a collection of VST plug-ins for PC and MAC. The kit consists of: PSP PseudoStereo, PSP StereoEnhancer, PSP StereoController, PSP StereoAnalyser. These plug-ins are applied for creating, expanding, improving, controlling and analysing the image and quality of the stereo signal in single tracks or mixes thereof. A demo version, as well as audio examples, can be downloaded here: http://www.pspaudioware.com/download1.html PSP MixPack and PSP StereoPack packages got rave reviews in Recording Magazine, TDM Magazine, KEYS and received the title of 'Ultimate Buy' from Computer Music, the title of 'Our Choice' from the Estrada i Studio. On top of that, PSP has just released v1.5 of the MixPack which ads even more functionality! The deal: Both packages for the price of: $100 if >= 10 packages sold (about 20% discount) $88 if >= 20 packages sold (about 30% discount) $65 if >= 30 packages sold (almost 50% discount!!!) The normal price is: MixPack 100 USD + StereoPack 24 USD = 124 USD. So once again we can use the power of the group! The more packages we buy, the less we pay! The deal is available for 3 weeks, starting today. This means it's valid until 20 June. Payment and registration happens in the week after that. How to order? Just send an email to BOTH of these addresses: logicusers@... and joeri@... In case there are any further questions, feel free to contact me at joeri@... Bye, Joeri Note from myself: I've been using these plugins for a while already and I'm highly impressed by their quality and functionality! The StereoPack's correlation meter is the ultimate phase-metering plugin for me. I use the other plugins of the StereoPack for detailed manipulation of the stereofield. Sometimes I use it on individual tracks and sometimes I use it on the master. The StereoPack is the ideal solution for mixing and mastering things for vinyl imo! The MixSaturator is my favourite tool for "warming up" tracks and giving them that "vintage" sound. The MixPressor is a compressor with completely different characteristics than Logic's internal compressor. Very, very nice! Both packages are a powerful extension to Logic's internal plugins! This is of course my personal opinion. Feel free to download the demos and hear/try for yourself! -- Joeri Vankeirsbilck joeri@... Subject: Mono Playback tracks
Message #6145
I'm running a logic 4.7 tdm system with adat bridge and two RME ADI-8 PRO's to and from an analog console. I was wandering is there any way to playback a recorded mono audio track out of logic on a single channel? I only see stereo playback choices. Just pan the track hard left or right to get a mono output. -- P e t e r H . S ø r e n s e n PS:MUSIK Gl. Pan hard right (for even numbered outputs: 2,4,6,8 etc...) or hard left (for odd numbered outputs: 1,3,5,7 etc....). It's no different than the way the vast majority of outboard consoles work. f-erenc szabo, smarty pants Z+E+R+O+B+E+A+T "NOW POWERED BY THE MIRACLE OF THE TRANSISTOR!"
