Keep the Unitor (or in my case AMT8) turned on all the time and you
won't have any problems. It doesn't use any power worth talking about.
Alternatively, find a bus-powered interface.

FYI I just finally got through reorganising my whole EXS library using
the excellent EXS Manager Pro and to my surprise when I finally did my
final scan of my own libraries and EXS Factory library together I was
surprised to find clone samples. One lot was in my Vienna Symphonic
folder and the other was in my Garageband Samples folder. In other
words Apple must have licensed some VSL library when building their GB
library.
Go figure...

Nick, are you saying AudioMIDIsetup gets confused on not seeing the
interface on bootup then creates another copy when the Unitor is powered up?
Regarding purchasing a new interface, I've never seen this issue on my
McIntel with Logic 8 installed on a fresh system, so I think
clean-installing both the OS and Logic is better than replacing a perfectly
working interface... Just MHO...

Nope. I'm saying that maybe five years ago I used to have to phooph
around to get the MIDI interface to be seen when I flipped the switch
to turn on my studio. In all honesty I forget the specifics, but it
was never just "turn on the switch and play" like it is now - I
had
to power-cycle the interface sometimes, or maybe unplug and plug its
USB cable - again, I forget.
Now I just leave it turned on all the time and I haven't even looked
at it for ages.

OMG! Have you ever updated the firmware? Been using mine for 7 or 8
years and never seen it here... Or in the worst case pressing the
panic button made it work... Now I recall having an issue when
switching to USB, but I solved it right away by getting a top-quality
USB cable shielded on both ends... Am I just lucky or what :-) ?
Best,
Andy

So aside from the unitor and amt which from all the comments have an
acceptable level of midi voodoo are there any other worthy alternatives? I
am suspicious of the viability of the driver on intel machines and think a
USB 2.0 designed device might be wiser to go for.

Probably, but I have no interest in doing anything to it now.
Another reason to keep it turned on is that sometimes I launch MIDI
programs without my studio turned on, and I don't want to deal with
dialogs about not being able to find the MIDI interface.
Again, it doesn't use any power worth talking about, so I just have
it sitting in a rack way back under my desk along with other stuff I
don't ever need to look at.

The transition to USB MIDI in general was a huge PITA. Serial MIDI
worked perfectly (except for that horrible DIN connector), and then
all of a sudden everything was a mess for a couple of years.
Not all the interfaces worked right away. It took MOTU a ROM chip
upgrade, and there were other problems. This is all a good ten years
ago, though - water under the bridge. Now they all seem to work fine.

Oh, the AMT and Unitor are both very good boxes, and even USB 1 for
MIDI is shooting mosquitoes with an anti-aircraft gun. You don't need
the extra bandwidth.
About ten years ago I had all the multiport interfaces in for an
article when I was the editor of Recording magazine, and the reason
the AMT is the one that's here is that it's one of the models that
worked - if not THE model that worked.

Andy, how would one do this?
I have Unitor 8 serial & and a recently purchased Unitor 8 USB which
seemed like the best solution for more ports as I added some control
surfaces. The USB one connected to the computer and the serial one off
of that. I seem to have persistent not found type issues so I've
followed this thread with interest.
I tried all suggestions - reinstall U8 driver from Logic 8 DVD, and
also trashed AudioMidi preferences but no change.
Kind regards

There was a sysex file available with every version of Logic (until
version 5 AFAIR), which you dump to the unit with SoundDiver or Unitor
Control. Let me know if you need it (I still have all of my old
installer disks somewhere). Mind you, in your situation I'd try
replacing the cable first and only then mess with the firmware.
Best,
Andy

Thanks Andy. I've put on a new cable today. Quite a kick ass one which
came with my Epson USB 2 Scanner. Fingers crossed...

On the cable note what length cable is the max to use with a USB midi
interface?

It depends.
I had problems using anything over 5 metres unless you put a powered
hub or something in the chain.
I did have a studio with a machine room for a long while though- with
a good powered KVM I was able to get the cable run as long as 20 metres.
There is probably some standard info- maybe check with MOTU and see
what they reckon.

Hello,
I finally ordered the Logic Studio upgrade. Can I install the
upgrade and keep my Logic 7 intact? What do I need to do to make
sure Logic 7 continues to work? Do I need to use Logic 7 for any
old songs that need driver switching (like copying coreaudio setup to
DTDM). I use the audio configuration window for this now, do I
understand correctly that this window is missing in 8? Thanks for
any help.

Mine is 20' with no power hubs. It's shielded on both ends, maybe this
is why it works much better than shorter ones... Just guessing...

Hi Judson,
I have done so and Logic 7 works fine- I still use 7 on 80% of my work
anyway.

Hey All
Am I the only one having crashes when auditioning rex files through the
import audio file window? About every 4th file I listen to produces a
"tdm"
logo on the cursor and then the beachball of death. This is with PT 6.4,
Logic 7.1, MAC OS 10.3.4. Thanks!
Setup:
OS 10.4.8
Logic 7.2.3
2 x 2.66 GHZ Dual-Core Intel Xeon
3Gig 667 Mhz DDR2 FB-Dimm
TDM
Old 888 i/o
Few Farm Cards
Will this setup work with Logic 8?
Thanks guys!!!!
Hi
No this won¹t work at all. First of all, for a legacy protools system
you
ac use no later than Mac OS 10.3.4 and Quicktime 6.5. Also Logic 7.1 is the
last version of logic to work with Legacy TDM systems.

Hi!
I have updated my G4 with Tiger and I need to resintall Logic 6. However, I
can't find the original Logic Cd so I only have the Logic key and the key
number and I REALLY need to use Logic again! Can anybody tell me what's the
best way to get Logic 6 running again under these circumstances?
Thanks for your tips, Andrés
the authorizations (purchases) are written onto the
USB key, so they should still be there. However there
was a faulty series of USB keys and there was a
temporary exchange program (for free) with Apple. That
time ran out a long long time ago...
I suggest you browse the apple support pages, you may
find a hint, either a good idea or an e-mail address
at Apple that would actually reply. Don't shun these
pages, they are excellent resources
http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID6
When you start Logic 6 what does it say? Does it find
the key?
If ever you want to upgrade you may want to know that
Logic 8 doesn't run on G4 machines slower than 1 GHz.
However I recently found out to my surprise that Logic
8.01 does run on my old 887 MHz G4 laptop whereas 8.00
didn't.
Good luck

Hi
Has anyone else noticed this change of behavior since 8.0.1?
Values can't be entered in TDM plug-ins by clicking/double clicking and
typing. It still works with Waves and the new Soundtoys bundle (Echoboy
etc), but not with Digidesign, Echo Farm, Eventide, Soundblender etc.
Everything works in 8.0.1.
I'm still on PT 7.1x. Maybe it's different for PT 7.4 users?
Though I'm still using Logic 7.2.3, I try to follow how it goes with Logic
8.

Yep I noticed that.
Also still no channel solo on aux channels or things bussed to them.
I'm on PT 7.3.1cs4 .... anyone on 7.4 got any news on this ?
