Wait until OS X comes out. With Apple's new built-in MIDI services,
we'll be looking at a whole new ball game.
Of course, it remains to be seen which of the current MIDI interfaces
(if any) will be compatible with the new scheme. Herbie Robinson, on
daw-mac, had some interesting comments on this a few weeks ago.
According to him, OS X's built-in MIDI service will only function
efficiently with interfaces that support time stamping. I know that
the MOTU interfaces (with MTS - "MIDI Time Stamping") do support
this, but it's my impression that the Logic interfaces with "AMT"
do
things differently. Perhaps they'll be able to solve this with a
firmware update. At any rate, it'll be interesting to see what
hardware makes the jump. Personally, I'm holding on to my stable of
Studio 5 LX's until it's clear how the chips will fall.
I sure hope we can return to an industry wide standard (greatly
updated, of course) like we used to have with OMS (this time, under
Apple's evenhanded control so it can't be appropriated by a jerk like
the CEO of Gibson). It would be great to be able to use different
applications and synth plug-ins and not have to fret about numerous
proprietary MIDI schemes with an alphabet soup of acronyms.
I also hope that all the manufacturers see the value (to the
consumer) of such standardization, and don't cobble together some OS
X kludge to stubbornly maintain their proprietary way of doing things.
