RTAS is inefficient, and does not take advantage of OSX's audio and MIDI kernel level processing. AU is much better. High end sampler plug-ins like Kontakt 2 don't work well in RTAS. Vienna Symphonic Library decided not to even make their new VI available in RTAS, because RTAS couldn't cut it. It'll be interesting to see what Digidesign does with RTAS in the future. It would be great for MacPT users is PT supported AU, but I doubt that will happen.
