When's the last time you tried IAC MIDI, James, and what OS X version
are you running on what machine? I use it all the time on a 2 x 2.5
G5, and I can tell you that it's 100% set-and-forget reliable, day in
and day out. Not an issue in the world. Likewise I use MIDI Over LAN
instead of hardware MIDI interfaces for my slave computers too.
USB MIDI interfaces have a history of being a huge pain in the ass,
frankly. There's absolutely no reason to use cables on the same
computer anymore.
