I have found that a high percentage of the time, the failures are the
power supplies, not the drives. Try swapping them out. It really makes
a difference.
Also, reformatting the "failed" drives makes them work again,
usually
indefinitely.
I hate LaCies as well, but this has made a bad situation better.
