All this makes sense. You are having problems with the the system starving.
When you start a recording the computer first alicates the HD space that the
recording is going to be stored on. It will assume that each track is the
length defined by the session. (Don’t Define a long session if you
know the song is shorter) The recording and storage is done under the
operating system and can complete even if the program in charge (In this
case Logic) as a crash or is interrupted. The Wave Form Display (sometimes
called an overview) is done by the program in charge, Logic and is a
separate graphics file. When it crashed it stopped creating the Wave Form
Display so you only see the graphic display up to the point where it
crashed. Try dragging in the sound file. That may force Logic to re-create
the Wave Form Display. Repair you permissions and blow out the PRAM. To see
if that solves the crash problems. Also leave your computer on overnight for
a couple of days. It should
automatically defrag your hard disk. Throw out old unused files.
