I couldn't get this to work over eSATA. Firewire works fine for boot drives though. This was using an external case with eSATA, FW 400 and 800, with a S-ATA Samsung 500 HD. Subject: [L-OT] Mac Pro+Logic Pro 8+EWQL Plat. Bundle compatibility.
Message #6854
I'm thinking of upgrading to a Mac Pro with Logic Pro 8 and using the East West Orch Platinum Bundle with the latest OSX. At the East West web site they mention that: "Use of this product (Plat. Bundle) with an Intel Mac requires Kontakt 2.2 or later (not included)." My question is this: Does the EXS 24 in Logic Pro 8 include the Kontakt 2.2 ? If not, how much is the Kontakt 2.2 ? Are there some folk in Logic land who use a Mac Pro with Logic Pro 8 and the East West Orch Platinum Bundle with the latest OSX who could comment on how well this combination works. My primary concern is how well this system set-up can create a convincing orchestral midi mock-up. Thanks in advance, Jim ------------------------------------

Subject: [L-OT] Boycott Monster Cables (was: Monster cables vs coat hangers)
Message #6857
[reposted from the LUG at moderator request] > But the Monster line is apparently not a > good value for the money. Just like Bose, here's a great example of a company that thrives on a false consumer perception of the quality of their products. People (especially home theater consumers) think that they make the highest quality cable on the market, therefore it must be true. However, a much more important reason to never ever ever ever ever ever use anything from Monster is their vicious, absurd, thuggish litigation practices. They will pretty much sue anyone, audio-related or not, that uses the word "Monster" in their name. None of which would in any way be confused with their company, such as the TV show Monster Garage, the movie Monsters Inc., a vintage clothing store called Monster Vintage, so on and so on. It's ludicrous that they are allowed to continue this practice. A Google search will show scores of frivolous lawsuits they've filed over the years, none of which have merit and many of which have proved disastrous to the defendants, forcing many innocent business owners to spend untold dollars to defend themselves against these false accusations, and sometimes lose the companies they worked so hard to build. Boycott all Monster products. Period. No exceptions. ------------------------------------

Brian Pylant wrote: > Boycott all Monster products. Period. No exceptions. Completely agreed on. This topic has been raised before a few years or so back - and well, what can I say? I got a bunch of Monster cables to test with my live guitar rig (basicallly 4 of them - for the "main" connections, from the guitar to the pedal board, from the pedal board and back to an insert loop and the final output, with 2 more of them as a spare), and while they are certainly nice cables, I simply gave them back (to a friend who is some sort of endorser, even if he's currently re-thinking things). Could've kept them for free, but I just don't support any such tactics. In addition, there's cables for *way* less, sounding just as good to my ears, at least for instrument purposes (in Germany, Rockinger is supplying quite some nice pre-made cables for a lot less, but personally, I still prefer to just solder them myself). I really don't give a flying f*** whether there's lifelong warranty or not. I've got more than enough cables that I've soldered like almost 20 years ago - and they're still working. In case they wouldn't, I'd just either resolder them or get a new cable for 5 bucks, still using the same Neutrik plugs that I've bought back then. And I don't expect to get any older than 200 years. And well, there's simply no excuse to support any such business tactics at all. More to the opposite (actually, *exactly* to the opposite). In other words: That Noel Lee dude can happily rot in hell for what he's trying to do to folks. And yes, I'm serious. That's just no way to found an even remotely proper business. And fwiw, finally there's serious folks speaking up. See this: http://www.audioholics.com/news/industry-news/blue-jeans-strikes-back I seriously wish Kurt Denke all the success in the world. Hi: I was wondering if you could recommend a Symphonic Orchestra package for Logic 8 on a Mac Pro. What I know right now is EWQLSO Gold Bundle and the 2-4-1 special they have going on. This package is 16 bit. I am wondering if there is anything else that might be 24bit for a hundred or two more, and if I will really hear a difference. I am currently NOT doing professional work, but hope to do Film/TV Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Chaz ------------------------------------

Yes. Even very successful. Might be worth noting that everything is freshly installed, no updates, archive functions or migration assistents and whatsoever. Extremely stable and very efficient. Seems to be like that for quite some people using the most recent machines, OSX.5 and fresh installs. Fwiw, this does seem to be pretty much ON topic. I am certainly running 10.5 with Logic Studio! Tested and approved on my 2 macbookpro's and the tower! We are running huge automation and all virtual plugs and synths, with plenty of audio tracks as well. I would say there is conflicts with certain hardware (audio interfaces) I would look into that first as a suggestion, research compatibility issues. I am using the Motu 828mk2 and most of the time no interface at all since I am mixing on the road right now. Drew R. Szczygiel President & CEO (203) 979-9619 Imagine That Media, Inc. However, the word around the office is that the Miko & Niko really lack in the A/D conversion and sound card. The Niko actually has prosonus card sticking out the back in, which I hear looks pretty tacky. Rumor has it the Niko is expected to have a revamp coming soon. So if your really considering it, maybe A good idea to hold out. I¹ll dig a little deeper tomorrow. Are you considering purchasing one? For what reason? Honestly, if it where me, I would pickup the Fantom G by Roland. I have been learning this a little everyday, and it is wicked! This workstation blows away anything I¹ve played yet. Check it out. Hello folks, I always have a firewire audio device (Yamaha i88x) connected to my mac, and all of the audio output is directed to that device. It has worked fine for almost 2 years. Starting about 6 months ago, 'Mail' no longer outputs its sound. I have tried setting System Preferences > Audio to Output 'Sound Effects' to 'mLan' (Firewire) and to selected System output device with no luck. As I said, Mail's sound (New Mail sound) use to be just fine. Now it it no-where to be heard. Ant ideas? Thanks in advance, Dave Shirk Oriental, NC ------------------------------------
