Subject: [L-OT] Problem converting GOS gig files to EXS24.
Message #6476
Hi, I received my Garritan Orchestral Srings last week but cannot get the gig files to import or convert to exs files. I copied the Gigasampler files into the Sampler Instruments folder. When I try to load a gig file into the EXS24 I get a dialogue box saying: "insufficient access priveledges for operation REULT CODE = - 5000" This happens for each sample I have tried to load. I'm not sure if my error is mac, logic or GOS related. I'm using a dual 1gig G4 with L7.1.1 on OS 10.3.9 Thanks for any helpful hints. Jim

Okay okay this is a nightmare to do by hand (as it were) but you can use a batch program to do it, in Tiger there is 'the automator' but I don't know about Panther (Lets look up more OS names in the book of big cats ;-) ). I'm sure someone can suggest an App if this proves to be the problem, Mike

Subject: reliable hardware
Message #6478
I am a logic pro user for over a year now. So far I have been using a Power Mac G5 (dual 2.7) and everything has been running perfectly in my amature home studio. However since I am going away from home to study in university I can not bring my G5 and all the equipment with me, . I was considering buying the new intel based iMac and use it with digidesig's Mbox for recording. In general I dont need more than 30 audio channels and 5 midi channels in my recordings, (or 25 audio 10 midi) but I can get quite heavy on the plug-ins that I use. Is this a reasonable amount of pressure that the new iMac could handle without having noticable latency, or am I better off not even trying to use the iMac for recording purposes? If anybody has had any experience with this please let me know. Thank you.

It's too soon to use the intel macs for Logic or ProTools software. You need to wait for Apple & Digi to release "universal" versions of their software. If you must get something right now and use it immediately, you need to stick with the G5 until the new software is available, probably a few months. Even then, it might be a while till they get the bugs out. - Dave

It's a simple program that puts an interface on a standard unix script. It will change permissions on a folder and every file inside it which can be many files, so be alert with your choices when you use it. - Dave

This is a very timely topic for me since I'm about to install GOS. However, I don't think its OT in the least. Maybe it should be moved to the EXS list? JP

On the other hand, if you are making music professionally and can't take a chance on work interruptions, it might be better to wait for a few updates to get the bugs out. And third party stuff will take longer to catch up as you pointed out. - Dave

I currently have a problem with my 5.5.1 system. Intermittently while playback and recording, the system hangs and playback stops, some notes stay on. I have to turn off the amt and unitor 8's exit out of logic and restart logic. Than all works ok. The question is, I can pick the operating system but which one is reallt the most appropriate fit for 5.5.1. I recently bought a 2005 Dual 2.5 G5 and since buying it have not yet been able to get my sound card to work. I've tried different PCI slots, sent it back to the factory to check compatability and it is. It worked fine in my old G4 under OSX 10,3. I'm using 10.4.5 with 3 gigs of ram and 2 250 gig internal drives. I've installed the driver and the mixer app in login items and still the card doesn't show up in the profiler. Any body else ever run into this? Thanks, Jon

I gather you can fry a G5 by putting an older PCI RME card in it - perhaps not your one.

Logic 7.2 was modified to work well with the intel chips, so no problem there. Also, the Imac is quieter than you G4 with it's loud fan, so it is better in the studio. Your english is excellent, remember that we can't speak a word of your language, so you are far ahead of us......G

OEM software from a reputable dealer is legit! By definition the OEM software can not be legally sold separately without hardware. Therefore some dealers will sell the OEM software accompanied by an old piece of worthless hardware to meet legal requirements.

Subject: [L-OT] DVD project, which app to use. Would Logic suffice?
Message #6495
Hi All, I have my first DVD project that involves video, voice over and music and am wondering what app to use. Any help and recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Here's a brief project descript. There are 4 tracks minimun of audio involved. Voice over, a breathing SFX trk, and music (2 trk). I have to edit these to video, combine and bounce to 2 trk 48K. Was wondering if Logic would suffice for this or if there was another app. more suitable. Pro Tools is out of the question, i have no Digi-design products. I was wondering if maybe Apple's Soundtrack Pro would work for this. The video is finalized and the music has been mixed to 2 trk. but will need to be edited to work with the video. Help here is greatly appreciated, thanks all.

This has little to do with Logic but Drumagog 4.04 rocks, I can' believe how easy it is to replace or make midi tracks out of audio. I was almost giving up on them and kind of regretted that I participated in the groupbuy but now....No sad snare drum will remain unreplaced.
