simply slow-double-click on the name of the file and it should change
to edit mode.

Hello
I use logic seven, on a G4 computer and I have a Sony CD burner. I have
been having trouble writing my songs to CD. Can anyone provide me with
information how I can convert the songs that was done as a midi file in
logic. How can I make the song file an audio file to burn to CD. Or can I
just burn the CD and the song goes from the MAC to the burner? I don't think
this is the way but can some one give me some instructions on how to do
this?

I've had excellent results with both La Cie and Maxtor triple-
interface external drives. I don't know what manufacturer's drives
are inside them. They do FW 400, FW 800 and USB 2. I have several in
various sizes, 250G, 300G, 500G and none have ever failed. I did
have one older La Cie 250G drive fail after four years - it was from
around 1999 or 2000 when the face plate was blue. I have three more
of those old ones still running now and they're working OK.

Many applications rely on libraries and preferences on the system
drive. So moving the apps to the second drive does not work properly
unless you use that drive as your startup drive. But I won't do that
because then you again record to that system drive, have your samples
here and two systems to maintain.
You can leave the apps on the current drive and have all audio files
on the other one: all your songs, samples, IR's, other sound libraries.
Be aware that you might need to reinstall some audio applications/
plugins if you don't find a way to tell them the new path to their
audio files. Aliases work in many cases but not in all. At least do
not expect to copy files and run as if nothing happened. May need a
couple of hours. Or days, if you have a lot to reinstall and
reconfigure. But it is worth the efforts.

Leave the apps on the boot drive. Then put all of your audio files.
and sample
files on the 2nd drive. In our experience, this works well.

thanks for the help.
Hi
I've been trying to get a garage band file to open in logic 7 but have
had no luck.
Also I cannot get logic to recognize the sounds that come with garage
band.
Nor can I get the DSP settings of GB to open in L7.
Similarly I cannot open a L7 file in GB even though the help file of GB
says to just drag a midi file icon into the GB time line.
Has anyone had any luck accomplishing any of these tasks and willing to
point me in the right direction?
Regards
Jim
Hi
Has anyone been successful Importing a logic midi file into garage band

Hi,
does anyone of you have a Focusrite Saffire and uses extensive
monitoring?
I don't like the monitoring via that control panel which does not
work properly anyway. I need two independend monitor mixes from Logic
panned and merged with 1-4 input signals and a full mix for the
engineer. But I cannot get enough independend audio channels while
recording, to monitor via a submixer. Only four.
Are there some hints for flexible monitoring with a Saffire but
without the control panel?

Hi Peter
I don't have a saffire, but do have a suggestion. Post this to the
LUG? It is certainly more on topic than some of the "intel mac"
discussions running right now ;-).
kind regards

I am interested in your suggestions, naturally.
Just the Saffire game is over for me. I returned the first unit
because of broken phantom power. The second unit worked a couple of
hours until phantom power went down again. The dealer told me
something about early series, repaired units and so on and the price
was very low but I decided to stop that experiment, frighten the bank
and go for a Fireface.
I started with an Aggregate Device Saffire+Firewire 410 as the
Saffire broke. That would make the system more flexible and give me 8
ins and 20 outs although I would keep the bigger latency of the 410.
We can go to the LUG with that if you want, I just cannot test
anything because the Saffire will leave the studio today. Would be
more of a theoretically discussion.

Peter, what's your overall impression of the Saffire? I've been
looking at it as a kind of Mbox for Logic... and picking one up (not
until the dust from NAMM settles, of course).
It seems perfect: a good Logic citizen, 4 in, 10 out, 24bit/192kHz
processing which nothing else at this price point seems to have. It's
surround capable, and the big gripes about the software interface
look cleared up with v 2.0 of the saffire control.
one other question OT...
so i'm at the stage where i'm going through the apple certified
books, teaching myself logic (and audio engineering in general), with
an mbox, powerbook, and a small midi keyboard.
it's a happy little home i have so far.
at work (mac IT) in our storage room is a mackie d8b that hasn't been
touched or used in well over a year.
a) what exactly is that beast?
b) is it of any use? what does it do?
c) can it be hooked in with logic somehow?
d) might it cost money to get it up to date and running? (e.g.
software updates, etc.)
any thoughts would be appreciated. i don't think my boss exactly
knows what it is or what its value might be.

Good device if you are happy as it is. You cannot have mono outputs
for monitoring, they are always paired and you can just balance them.
You need the control panel always open and visible, at least to
change between recording and playback.
There could be an issue with a "too hot" Firewire bus of the iMac
G5,
suspected the dealer after he got several units returned (two of them
were mine). But that was just a guess while they investigated the
problem. I can't say what the real cause is but the phantom power
went down below 5 V which filled the headphones with perfect silence.

The sound quality is very good and the effects either. Foldback
reverb is a relief if you record vocals.
You are right, in terms of sound quality there is nothing comparable
in that class. It costs 475 Euro here, some special price. I didn't
even find another device in that price class, not to mention the
quality.
I returned mine and got a Fireface because of the stereo-only
monitoring of the Saffire, the phantom power failure and the
software. Of course I payed the triple price for the Fireface and a
comparison won't be fair.
> and the big gripes about the software interface

There were big gripes? My God. One of the "small" gripes in the
Mac
version 2.0 was still a showstopper for me.
Conclusion:
If you want one, get one and test it. If you are happy then it was a
very good deal. If not but you want that sound quality, be prepared
to spend much more money.

It's a powerful, full-featured, automated digital mixing console. I've been
using it as the center of my studio for about five years, and though I do
have a few issues, overall it's a killer board. If you're currently using an
M-Box and one keyboard, setting up and making use of the D8B might be
overkill, as it's designed to handled up to 56 inputs (analog and digital),
has eight busses, twelve aux sends, two monitor sends and more. It would
only really be useful to you if you needed lots of inputs for keyboards or
external outboard effects, or are doing live multi-channel recording, taking
advantage of its twelve mic preamps and flexible headphone mix
capabilities.
The board does have possibilities as a Logic controller, but its size makes
it a little impractical for that use in most setups. I do my audio work on a
PC, using Logic only for composing, so I've never explored this option. I
believe D8B software version 5 turned it into a virtual HUI, but I'm not
positive about that.
You might want to plug it in and see what software version it shows when it
boots, and check out the back panel to see what kind of interface cards it
might have. Then you'd have a better idea of whether or not it might be
worth trying to integrate into your studio. It does require a large,
external, rackmounted CPU/power supply unit, so look for that. And, to work
with it easily, it really needs a keyboard, mouse, and VGA monitor.

Does anyone use in-ear monitoring instead of headphones for mic
recording? I think of getting good in-ear phones (cabled) and get rid
of the big thing on the head and the leakage to the mic (even with
closed headphones).
Are in-ears are comfortable enough, do they deliver a usable sound
quality to get into the right mood even for fragile songs? Do they
provide less leakage? What do singers say to that kind of monitoring
- do they feel more free or more "plugged"?

hi Peter,
you may find that some musicians are too sensitive to the in-ear monitors
due to their generic shape. This same issue may cause some leakage to get
back into the mics, that is, you may get a big enough gap due to a lose
fit.
The advantage is that you don't need to send too high of a signal into
them and that'll avoid a high level leakage.
Lastly, some singers prefer to have one ear on the monitor and one off so
that they can hear themselves. I guess you can always tape over the
hanging monitor and carry on.

I guess each person should have their own set of in-ears?

But that and the small size means usually less low end. Do the in-
ears provide enough bass for a smooth tone, to feel comfortable?

Usually I switch one channel of the monitor mix off and I guess in-
ears are just small phones and I could do the same, not?

if you don't EQ your signal, you'll be hard to please everyone.

If you have individual routes to each set of monitors, you certainly can
do this. My setup is low cost and most people share signals in a variety
of combinations. So, closing off a channel may affect some who need it.

I did not find an explanation in the manual or on the RME website:
The Fireface/Totalmix manual says the setting "Hi Gain" for the
outputs gives me +15 dB Headroom. There is another statement that "Lo
Gain" on inputs gives me also +15 dB Headroom. Could someone
enlighten me what that means? Does it make sense to enable both or
when should I enable the input "Lo Gain"? I can't see a difference
on
the level meters.
