Sirs,
I'm looking for a good partner of Logic. In other words, ususally I import
vinyl in order to edit in Logic, are there application suitable for this
kind of operation? I use Mac OS X.
Best Regards.
Angelo Andina
Dear Users,
Has anybody successfully synchronized MIDI between Sibelius and Logic
on the Mac? I am starting to use Tiger right now and I am interested
in playing AU instruments in Logic from the MIDI output of Sibelius,
the program I prefer to use for a lot of my composing.
Any ideas how to do this? My computer is certainly powerful enough as
I have a G5 dual.
I know about the IAC bus in the Audio-MIDI set up. Unfortunately most
people I talk to have never found any use for it. I believe that a
lot of Sibelius users would very much like to be able to make use of
audio instruments on the Mac but without some sort of communication
protocol it is not going to happen.
Regards
Paul Nicholls
I did a Logic-Users group buy for Camel Audio. Camel Phat & Space work
fine, but I cannot
get Cameleon 5000 to work. I went to their website and followed their
instructions for
adding prefixes, etc.—no dice. Has anyone else had a problem with Cameleon
5000, but
was able to resolve the problem? If so, how did you do it? Thanks,
Mitchell

Hey, I use LP 7 Mac osx I had a problem with ca 5000 and midi I was usin a
radium 49
through my tascam 1884. It appears that ca 5000 midi works on priority. it
would always
look at the internal midi first instead of my tascam . I would have to tuen
off the tascam start
ca 5000 the my radium would work then turn on my tascam and everything cool.
I dont know
if that will help you . OH yeah, If you dont need the iac driver disable it
Occasionally after I have quantized I'll notice that all the notes have
shifted a bit on the grid. I usually select all of them and manually
slide them back only to find that it has occurred in all the audio
instruments. Any idea what's going on? I'm using Logic Pro 6 OS X.
A similar thing... in my arrange I have accidentally shifted the
starting point in the arrange to a minus so that the starting point is
no longer 1. When that has happened I just live with it because I
haven't figured out how to reset it. It happens when I'm moving
sequences or audio regions or resizing and the cursor slips into the
"1" area of the bar ruler. I see it shift but can't figure how to
undo
it.
One last question, in Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" there's a
hooky
instrument that starts right after the drums. Does anyone know if that
sound is included in Pro 6? I can't remember running across it in the
synthesizers.
Thanks Peter

I believe yor're referring to Stevie's clavinet. And
that's more than "a hooky instrument", it's a Monster
signature lick for that song, and probably THE nost
famous clav lick ever. (Actually it's several clavs
layered.)
I'm sure there must be some clavs in Pro 6 but they
won't sound anything like that track. The best
software ones that I'm aware of are in the Scarbee
Vintage Keyboard Collection. I just bought them but
can't get them to work in Logic. Demos blew me away
though.

Its a clavinet
Hi All
Wonder if some of you clever fella's can help. When miking a drum kit(I'm
pretty new at this Live Drum stuff BTW), I 've got a good Bass drum sound
using an AKG D112 a Shure Beta 56a on the snare and Audix Tom mikes and
overheads, no problems with any of these , however I have a Shure 16A
condenser on the hihat and can't keep the rest of the kit out of it no
matter what gating I do, it was suggested to me as a good mike for the hihat
but I'm not sure, the sound is nice but,, spill overkill,,, any suggestions
out there on isolating the hat at least to an acceptable degree.
Cheers

Does anyone know where I could find a transcription of
Stevie's clav on this tune? I've always wanted to play that lick and
I'm sure I won't hear all the parts buried in the mix to transcribe
it myself. Also, I'm lazy. :-)

I have no experience with miking drumsets but... (well, I could stop
at this point right now, eh? :-)
...according the the description the 16A is a cardioid. If you cannot
gate it with the other mics, even if the drummer does not play kick,
snare and hihat at once - does it probably aim to the kit or is it
too far away from the hihat? Should be rather close and aiming to the
outside if possible. That can be a problem with a furious drummer
though...

It is indeed! In my opinion (as a clavinet fiend!) the EVD6 that
comes with logic is a very good representation of a clavinet. Its a
string modelling synth with more than enough scope to pull of a vast
majority of clav sounds, I use it very frequently. If you have logic
pro 6 or 7 you already have it. before that it was a paying upgrade.
Just get a decent expression pedal, link it to the wah (built in to
the EVD6, whats a clav without a wah!) and insert a guitar amp pro
(in 7), tweak and enjoy. I've certainly been able to get that stevie
vibe from it, it just needs tweaking, the presets really don't do it
justice, Mike
Thanks for that info. I'll try that out.
When I bought Pro 6, Pro 7 came out about a month or so later. I'm
ready to buy Pro 7. You wouldn't know if Pro 8 is about to come out
would you?

There was a whole thread on this recently in the

The 16A is a condenser with a cardiod pattern as you say but I still can't
get enough separation with it even when it's right up against the hihat, I
even tried to put a little tube around it to stop it picking up outside
sounds(without blocking the vents),, nothing doing,,,,hmmmmm

No. Apple does not tell anything until they are sure about the
release date. But big updates are usually announced a while before.

the most common approach to the hihat is underneath it, there's
really no way to totally isolate the sound, but keeping it close to
the bottom hat should do pretty well.
Hi men,
There´s no easy way to get what you want, and miking
from the underneath usually gives you a muddy sound
with no stick definition.
I usually do this: I point the mic at about 30-45
dgrees with the upper hat BUT LOOKING AT THE OUTSIDE
OF THE KIT ( This means miking the furthest edge of
the HH ). It works well with AKG 451 and better with a
414 on hyper cardioid. Solo the track and check for
snare leakage. that´s all you should be worried about.
This way the snare is on the dead spot of the cardioid
pattern so it´s quite attenuated.
Try to get a compensated HH sound out of your
overheads by placing these mics carefully.90 % of your
close hh sound ´ll come from here and 125% of your
open HH as well !
Then filter your HH track with a low cut ( aka hi pass
filter ) and get rid of everything else. EQ for
silkness and stick definition.
Blend to taste and you´re done.
Also I recommend checking for hh leakage on the snr
mic, mostly when using condensers. Too much HH on the
snr mic will complicate things when tryin to add
brightness to the snr.

I agree with these suggestions. A good portion of the hi-hat sound is
the stick definition, which would be mostly lost by miking underneath.
It could be that the Shure mic you're using just has lousy rear
rejection, so trying a different mic may solve much of your problem.
414's and 451's have excellent rejection, as do small Neumanns like
KM184's---which have the added benefit of a very smooth off-axis
response.
Recently I've been trying a suggestion from an interview I read, and
miking the hat about four inches past the edge, pointing slightly away
from the kit and essentially at the floor, and I've never gotten a
more silky, sizzly sound. (be sure to keep the capsule above the plane
of the cymbals to avoid air puffs) Great for fusion/jazz, at least.
These retailers look like they might have a useable product of hip hop
drums. I say this because the price is so high. Has anyone got the
complete banginbeats 'no excuses' drum collection or the complete
modernbeats/mpcsounds 'original gangsta and street platinum' drum
collections?
Give me a review before I spend the cash.
Thanks,
Roman Pirie.
