Subject: Apple Pro Audio policy
Message #6027
As some of you already know Apple has a "no free upgrade or discount to Logic 7" policy, even for those who purchased Logic Pro 6.4.2 two weeks ago. I had Apple Europe customer service on the phone this morning; it is basically a question of marketing. It may change only if Logic customers really complain about it. For now, I got answers like "VirtualPC from Microsoft has the same policy". Wow. In order to help Apple to understand how to manage pro audio products -say in a marketing perspective-, and following the suggestion of some other users, I have started a temporary group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/unsatisfiedlogicusers (attachements not permitted + members can hide their email address) If you want to help, please register, forward this mail everywhere, post some lines if you feel like, or just stand there, it should definitely disturb Apple enough that they might reconsider their actual and, more important, future policy. It is also the only place to discuss this matter, since Apple removes any not-technical post on their forum and other Logic Users groups are dedicated to other questions and do not need more mail on this issue. best basile

Subject: distortion in speakers but not headphones
Message #6028
I've noticed there is a lot of distortion coming from my speakers when I'm doing a mix in Logic but not in the headphones. I thought at first it was just something rattling but it is through the speakers. Although there is no clipping it sounds the same as clipping if I clip it intentionally. I'm using a Sony home theatre, 5 small speakers and a sub woofer. The headphones are attached to a TASCAM US-122 audio interface and not to the Sony. Is the Sony the wrong kind of audio equipment to use with Logic? It's only with Logic that I get the distortion. Thanks, Peter

Seems to me there's a bad connect, if it's logic, the headphones will also reflect the distortion, it's not the wrong equipment, it's a cord or if you have a go between device, or maybe that particular input at the sound system is bad.

I'm unfamiliar with your interface but you may need to buffer the audio level down before it gets to the surround speakers. I think they sell these devices at radio shack. They're used to go between +4 level professional operating systems and consumer level equipment which runs at at least -10. Danny

Subject: DC Offset
Message #6031
Hi Y'all, It seem that I am having DC offset problems when I trim short audio files, such as drum hits. This does not seem to be a problem with longer files. Anyone out there with any similar experiences? How do you remedy the problem? I've been using the remove DC offset in the sample editor for the shorter drum samples, but I like to run mixes through the Ren EQ with a steep cut @ 20Hz to prevent DC offset to appear on bounces. Are there any filter out ther that work around 10Hz? Thanks, Matt www.millertone.com

http://www.apple.com :) Exactly what I was saying the other day! Prices have dropped on a lot of Apple's product range lately but when you see the laptops drop a lot it seems something is coming. I am looking forward to the day when I can have a G5 laptop on the desk in front of me hooked up to a 30" Apple Display, probably have to settle for 23", with a couple G5s in the server room and be left with SILENCE. :) But I am a geek. Subject: Help With Sequencing on Logic 5 platinum
Message #6036
To anyone that can help, I have been creating my own sequences on Logic 5 using the Matrix edit and the mapped drums/ grandpiano etc channels. What I would like to know is how to create my own sequences using my own bass/synth/vocal samples. I created an Audio object in an audio channel and created a matrix but i could not work out how to import my own synth/bass notes and vocals onto the matrix to create my own sequences with them. I clicked on the menu and i saw Import Audio File on the matrix screen but it was faded which meant it was not accessible. Can you tell me how to do create my own sequences on the matrix with my own Wave files from my hard drive please? Also how do I work the exs24 to create my own sequences and what else can i do on it? Thanks for your help.

If you have an entire audio file, you can convert it to midi with the "Audio to Score" function. As an example, i wanted a back-up vocal part to be doubled by horns so i just made a midi score from that vocal part, and it triggered my keyboard for the horn part. But if you want, say a sample of your voice played as a midi part just insert your midi region onto an audioinstrument on the arrange page and on the enviornment page insert your sampler plug in with the imported wave file. good luck!! gajamb <g.battle@...> wrote: To anyone that can help, I have been creating my own sequences on Logic 5 using the Matrix edit and the mapped drums/ grandpiano etc channels. This is OT. I've had a website, The Jukebox & Who's Who Music http://www.thejukebox.tv for the past 7 years. It did really well in the past, but it's kinda been dying lately as I am really busy with other things and don't have time to keep updating it. I would be interested in having a few serious partners in this site to see if there is potential for rejuvination. Besides brainstorming, there is a need for administration, promotion, music news, reviews, graphics, web design and PHP programming. I also have a fairly popular webring, Songwriters WebRing http://www.thejukebox.tv/songring.php which is part of this site. To be realistic, the potential to make any real money off of the site is slim, but not impossible. If you have appropriate skills and experience and are interested get back to me. Thanks. I went with PTHD with the API8200/7800/7600 rackmount based system and just got a 10 slot lunchbox full of API 512c mic pres. So now I have big fader, little fader, and enough pres to track a pretty serious drum session. Plus I got to get rid of so many cables and a few patchbays and have less problems when I change something in my studio around now, everything sounds awesome, got the Mackie Control Universal with 2 xt¹s so I can use with Logic and w/ Pro Tools for doing automation Rides, and it CLEAN, FAT, PUNCHY and just plain awesome, I actually put an older SSL Logic FX G384 Compressor over the 2-buss, but its the old one not the new POS silver one. IN any case, I am an SSL guy and have been for a while but this system has been so awesome I have not been in a studio to do a mix in many many months as most of my clients have been extatic and so have I. My recommendation is to abandon the analog board, unless you¹ve got a big room and a big enough wallet to invest in an SSL G or old API or something like that, the best results I¹ve got have been with a good summing buss a good front end and enough processing power to have a party. jb

Hey All! I tried to post this on LUG - but as I figured - too OT. I just - finally received yesterday - Virtual PC 7. All previous versions will not run on a G5. Anyhow - other than the install instructions being all wrong - after a bit - I got it loaded - with Windows XP Pro. So far - I am impressed (and Surprised)! It runs great on the 2x2 G5 with 4GB Ram. About 2-3 times faster than my old 900Mhz Pentium box. Dave Shirk

Dave, It would be very interesting to hear about a comparison of audio applications "VPC7 vs OS X". Just any application that you have in both WinXP and OS X version. How much CPU power do we loose out on the VPC "middle man"? I've been thinking about investing in the Office suite and it seems that this VPC comes bundled then? I still have my SoundForge 5 and miss it a lot. My last audio PC went belly up the same week I bought my G5 one year ago (an action of protest?) Hi all, I am having a strange problem lately. G4 MDD twin proc 1.25GHz with MacOS9.2.2. At startup the screen will stay black. The computer goes through a fairly normal startup as far as I can tell (the lights on the digi interfaces stop blinking and go to their correct setting as they should do after a minute or so) but I can't do anything because the screen is black (22 cinema display). After restarting once usually the screen comes alive but all the maps, the trash and the controlstrip have changed location. They seem to think that the screen is much smaller and group themselves in the topleft quarter of the screen. Any ideas what might be causing this and how I can solve it? Thanks beforehand.
