Incredible, a blast from the past.
Joe Glymph (the same one, as if there would be more...) was actually my
old violin teacher!

I use an Avalon 737sp and totally love it... you can often pick up a
used model on eBay, or a store demo, for around $1500.

I first worked extensively with them in a studio I used to work in a
lot. They had a pair of them and they sounded great. Couple years later
I upgraded my own studio and was happy to buy one. It kept breaking
down. Seemed to be heat related. After three times I insisted the
distributor give me a new one. This new one has been rock solid for 18
months and somehow sounds better as well. Terribly subjective thing to
say I know, but some other colleagues felt the same also...?
I get the feeling that the sound of valve gear in particular can differ
significantly from unit to unit. Even brand new off the assembly line.
Buyer beware....

Hi,
Is there any way to have the finder sort items by filetype? Couldn't find
anything.
I actually somewhat find the default behaviour of everything being sorted by
name useless.
Forgive me if this is a newbie question - but then, I AM new to OSX.
Thanks,
Sascha
I downloaded a bunch of the ohmforce demos today- the
quad fromage and mellohman, amazing vibey stuff.. I
can't seem to find any stores that carry the Melohman.
A couple stores carry the effects, but not the synth
stuff.
Any pointers would help!
thanks-

Like before (in OS 9) you have the list view, it's a button in the
toolbar of the finder window, assuming that you have that grey
toolbar switched on (klick the little lentil on the top right of the
window), or you can of course access it from the View Menu or by
pressing apple + 2.
This you can then sort by kind.
I don't know if you can set the sorting by kind for the coloum view,
although I agree that would sometimes be a handy feature.
Cheers

Try using List View for the window. Select "as List" from the View
menu.
In the window, one of the columns is called "Kind" (you might need
to
make the window wider to see it. Click on "Kind" to sort by that
column. Click it again to switch between acending/descending order. Yo
can also grab the column with the mouse and drag it to change the order
of the columns.
You can also activate other columns in List View by selecting "Show
View Options" from the View menu.
This article has a quick overview.

Hello,
I'm putting the finishing touches on my new CD and am facing a problem. I
know there are some pro's here, so hopefully you folks can offer a few
suggestions.
As i am mastering my new CD, i am having considerable difficulty getting an
overall level balance between the songs. Some of the songs rely heavily on
distortion, while others are mellower and smoother. Even though the songs
have the same mathematical volume, to my ears the noisy/vile ones seem far
louder.
I know i could just decrease the final volume of the noisy songs to even
things up, but this throws off the level of the drums between songs. I want
to maintain a consistent rhythm section from start to finish. The mellow
songs still contain heavy percussion elements that must match the noisy
ones. They only seem quieter because they lack the aggressive distortion.
This may be a basic question to most of you. I apologize in advance. If
anyone can spare the time to give me some tips, i'd be most appreciative.
I'm running LogicPro 6.4.2, OSX 10.2.6, and am primarily using PSP Vintage
Warmer in the final stages.

I don't want to tell you not to master your own CD, but the main thing a pro

That's your amswer right there! The only way to do it is to use your ears.
Having a VU meter helps as well - check out PSP's free one. Also, you need a
meter that will give you a peak-to-average readout. Elemental Audio's free
"Inspector" comes to mind. You should aim for around -12dB

Sorry, you can't do it by trying to match just the rhythm section - you need
to listen to the songs as a whole.

BTW - I strongly recommend that you upgrade to Panther - 10.3.5.

You should also invest in a multiband compressor. I don't think anyone can
master properly without one. A TC Finalizer is the most expensive, the
Behringer DSP 9024 works just fine for a LOT less $$. Both also have
"other" FX that are very useful to maximizing your final stereo
mix.
Haven't seen a VST one, but that doesn't mean there isn't one by now...

I've moved this over to -ot. When I bought the mouse I checked out
usboverdrive and bluetooth was not support and no mention of it was
made. I just checked the web site and they're now saying bluetooth will
be supported with the next release. Sweet. I'd love to have those
buttons on the side for quick zooming operations.

You know (not that this is exactly related), so far it was Emagic doing
their best possible to make Logic less compatible to anything than ever
before.
OMF support still seems to be broken (at least it was the last time I tried,
not too long ago).
MIDI file ex/import has allways been lousy to say the least.
4.8 export simply sucks. Couldn't be anymore broken.
There's no plugin compatibility at all anymore. Even if you own exactly the
same plugin in both VST and AU format, those won't be compatible (no matter
whether the VST version was used on Windows or OS9).
As said, this is not exactly related, as a Windows/VST plugin won't load
under any Mac OS anyways (at least not natively), but Emagic have done a
good portion on the way of being less compatible than ever before.
These days I have a REALLY hard time loading a Windows/VST song into
LogicPro - until OS9 it was no problem at all. And I allways take care of
not using any plugin that doesn't exist in both VST and AU format. Still,
songs won't load properly.
Seriously, if I wouldn't love Logic so much for it's elegance in terms of
anything having to do with ergonomics... well, I don't know what I'd tell
Emagic. It defenitely wouldn't be what would be considered politically
correct.

Apple terminates world-wide Emagic distributors
By Katie Marsal
Published: 02:00 PM EST
Opting to sell its music production software exclusively through its
own channels, Apple recently issued walking papers to several
international distributors.
Apple Computer this month began sending letters to its world-wide
Emagic software distributors, informing them that their services would
no longer be required.
Emagic--creator of the Logic music production software suite--was
purchased by Apple for a rumored $30 million in 2001, and has since
operated as a wholly owned subsidiary of the computer company.
Frustrated by the most recent move, some former international Emagic
distributors are crying foul play. They claim that the Xskey--once
used to protect Logic applications from piracy--is now being abused by
Apple to solicit customer information to the exclusion of the
ex-distributors and dealers; the same people who previously made their
living selling and supporting the software.
"If this were to reach customers ears that their information can now
be used [by Apple] to dominate and control the music industry, I say
there should be a Law protecting [this] flow of information," one
former distributor said.
Dealers also fear that Apple may exploit some of the customer
information once provided innocently to Emagic through it's
Germany-based website. Armed with this data and the power to require
additional customer info through future releases of Logic, dealers
claim that Apple will soon be capable of dominating the software side
of the global music production industry.
According to Apple, Logic is used by over 200,000 musicians worldwide
and is the industry-leading audio production software for professional
musicians, audio engineers, producers and film composers.
Around the same time that Apple began dismissing world-wide Emagic
distributors, the company also registered for a trademark on the word
"ProBand." Some insiders have speculated that the company will
eventually re-brand the Logic product line under this new name.

I can remember making a crack about the Axis of Evil
when the buyout was announced but this stuff is hilarious.
"Proband" (!)
Stevo's taste - who could fault it?

can anyone help me? I can't syncronize audio to midi for some reason.
I've tried:
-changing the sample rate and changing it back again.
-in the sycronization page under 'audio' I've changed it to free and clear (
actually tried all
the settings but none fix the problem.
-I've deselected all the functions under 'midi syncronization'
-ran the logic setup wizard thinking it might reset the problem but that
didn't work.
It was all running fine for months and right in the middle of a project
without changing a
thing, this started to happen.
thanks
Phil
I've been noticing some interest in Logic 7 by some LUG members
recently and thought folks might find it interesting to learn that
Apple recently applied for trademark rights for the name 'ProBand' as
well as some other names for future products. This seems like a logical
name for GarageBand's future big brother, (the former emagic Logic??).
It seems like this will probably be the case. ... Or will there be a
third 'middle of the road' product between the two?
I guess we'll have to wait and see. Apple has done just that with their
video editing series:
iMovie --> Final Cut Express --> Final Cut Pro.
Hmmm... Let's see, maybe...
GarageBand -> Can'tLeaveMyDayJobBand -> ProBand
It seems like this is the way things are going. It should be business as
usual (same thing
happened with iMac G5 for the consumer, G5 tower for pros). The only down
side I can see
to this is loss of the name. It sounds silly but there is so much history in
it. In all honesty, I
wouldn't want to switch from Logic to "ProBand" (what a lame name)
independant of a few
minor advancements. Damn have I been conditioned eh. :)
Although it's hard to complain because Apple seems to have done great things
with
making their professional level products being extremely high quality. It's
nice to see a
split between consusmer and professional rather than putting out a medeocre
'prosumer'
product to try and satisfy everyone.
Never the less, it should be interresting.
I am selling Garritan Personal Orchestra and G Media Imposcar. They are
brand
new in sealed cartons., never opened or used. $175 and $125 respectively.

I've been using a pc with logic since 2000 and would like to update
the program to stay current but i don't have a mac as of yet. Is
logic a forever mac program now? Are there any big advantages to
using the 2 together if i use logic for midi alone? I have a 24 trk
hard disk recorder and i have a 24 channel mixer. I've always used
logic for midi with a Unitor 8 since all my instruments are either
keyboards or modules. I've never used any audio features of logic or
any software synths. I'd be interested in any feedback concerning the
differences.
Thanks

Are you using Logic 4.x or 5.5.1?
If you aren't using the audio features you have no reason to upgrade. Save
your money.
If you want to use the audio features you can use lot of them with Logic
5.x Windows. There may be some compelling reason to go with the Mac if
Logic 7 or whatever Apple decides to call it comes out sometime in the next
12 Months. However, I doubt that this would be the case if you only use
Logic as a midi sequencer.

Thanks, I use 4.81 in my studio and i have 5.1 on my personal
machine. for my purposes, being all midi related, they both do the
job. i haven't seen the newer versions since it became mac and don't
really know anybody else that uses logic in my little part of the
world.
