A very interesting read. Must read for every Logic fan. Thanks again,

Hi there peepz,
I've been trying to download this file for a couple of weeks from the emagic
site, and it's not happening at all...
http://www.emagic-mirror.com/pub/drivers/u8upd131.zip
Even their tech support email want product reg, but I've bought one
second-hand (MK1), and am trying to prepare everything in advance to save
some time.
It's only 8k I think. Does anyone have a copy they can email me?
I've had no probs downloading the other unitor files, but they seem to be on
a different server.
Hope someone can help.
TIA

Hi there,
is anyone besides me who thinks that the next upgrade is going to be
really cool?
I mean, just the fact that there wasn't a small update in month now
makes me think they must be cooking up really interesting stuff over
in Rellingen
Can't wait for that to happen
Cheers
Hans
the stellar-coolest thing I can think of is
bugfix bugfix bugfix bugfix bugfix bugfix bugfix bugfix bugfix
and actually, I don't think we are supposed to pay for that.

Speculation mode on :-) .
1. Totally re-designed (simplified) UI (for DP/SX/PT converts to feel
at home from the first minute) with an option for us, old users/fans,
to still be able to work in the usual way.
2. Support for Apple loops and other Acid like bells and whistles.
3. Fulll TDM integration (the way it was in 4.x and 5.x), including
fully functional ESB.
4. Better Rewire support, including Rewire slave mode.
5. SoundDiver and WaveBurner incorporated in Logic (both still
available as stand-alone apps).
6. (almost forgot) Support for broadcast wave format (timestamping,
exporting region definitions, etc.).
(Can't think of anything else at the moment)
Speculation mode off :-) .
Best,
Andy

Very interesting, thanks... am I the only one, however, that is a
little disturbed at how much of the UI from the original Atari days is
still in place (such as the tool icons, etc.)? You would think over the
course of 15+ years these things would've been updated, perhaps more
than once, along with the UI enhancements that did happen.
Just a thought...

I personally would keep an eye on good old ebay. It's the
easiest/fastest way to find what you want/need and they ship around the
world. I bought some Digi hardware and RAM for some of my samplers
there, all works fine so far (knock on wood :-) ).

I am thinking about selling my TAC Magnum (36/24/8/2) if you´re
interested.
Includes harness.
Drop me an email with your budget.
I´m in Germany near Cologne if that´s within your range.

Incidentally, anyone know why Apple 'crippled' gcc so that it no longer
compiles Fortran, Ada, or Java, as 'out of the box' gcc does?

Are there maybe separate gcc-java, gcc-(whatever) packages you can
install? A lot of the linux distrubtions at least are splitting
things up quite a bit lately - SUSE 9.1 even splits up php into 20+
different packages, one for each PHP module. Here's all the
different gcc packages RedHat ES3 has by default when you install
the development tools:

1. Copy the file "oldfile" to your username directory (the little

Actually, to create a zip file is even simpler, with Panther (10.3),
and does not require using the Terminal: Control-click (one button
mouse) or right click (two button mouse) the file you want to zip, and
from the contextual menu that appears choose "Create Archive..."
That's it; you're done!

Ebay is not that great. If you want to buy, I often see things going for
outrageous prices. For example, I was looking for some Mac Radeon Graphic
cards.
They get bid up to the point that they are actually more expensive than you
could find them new. On the other hand, when you sell you have the dilema of
risking selling it cheap if you get unlucky, or paying a lot of fees to ebay
to
guarantee a high price (but not guarantee a sale). I put a mac motherboard
on
ebay for $60 and ended up paying $4 and no one bought it.
In the LA/San Diego, Southern California area, you can sell (for FREE) on
www.recycler.com.
Sweetwater.com used to have a "trading post" where you could place
free ads.
And there was a site at Harmony Central as I recall. Again for free.
If you are selling CD's or books, then Amazon is the place. I have sold
hundreds of CDs and books through Amazon. You pay nothing unless you sell,
and it
stays online 3 months and then you can renew if it doesn't sell. They
collect
the money for you, accumulate it, and wire it to your bank account once a
month. They also determine shipping, so there is no haggling and rarely any
time
when you even need to have communication with the buyers.

We use that one at work to help the design dept. migrate to OS X,
and
it's proven extremely valuable. Another highly recommended title
for OS
X migrants.

It's not so much that OS X is making an assumption, but rather just
that this is how Unix has *always* been organized, separating the
user(s) from the system. If you're the only user on your machine
you
really don't need to worry about whether an application is
installed at
the system level or for your user only; it's only on truly multi-
user
setups where that might be critical (and even then only if you have
a
need to restrict one or more users' access to certain programs).
IMO the Unix underpinnings of OS X are one of the main reason some
folks are resistant to X; even the average user needs to have a
better
understanding of what's going on behind the scenes than with pre-X
Mac
OS (although not as much as running a Unix or Linux system; Jobs &
Co.
have definitely smoothed the ride about as much as possible). I
think
there are definite advantages to learning these things, too, but at
the
same time I understand the longing for the simplicity of OS 9 and
before - just remember that with the added complexity comes an
enormous
increase in power and flexibility that pre-X Mac OS simply couldn't
deliver. In the end I feel it's definitely worth it...
> The font situation is total nonsense -maybe 3 or 4 places for
example.
This makes total sense given how Unix is structured -- in
accordance
with the principle of separating the user(s) from the system you
must
have both system-level as well as user-level fonts, preferences,
etc.
(What *doesn't* make sense is what Adobe has been doing the last
few
years, adding additional font locations for Adobe products (which
font
managers such as Suitcase don't control).)
Additionally, if having fonts stored in multiple locations bothers
you
there's nothing stopping you from moving every font save for the
critical OS fonts to your local user folder. (You may have to log
in as
the root user to accomplish this.)

This is built into the Finder, there's no need to go to the
terminal or
to copy the file from it's original location. Just control-click on
the
document or folder and select "Create archive of..." and you'll be
rewarded with a .zip file.

Hi guys.
Background
Been in Music Prodn since daysof Notator on Atari.
I use logic pro on a G5 with RME / LUCID interface/ convertors.
Been through the 02r SOny Oxford route between 1997 to 2003
and decided to go back to my old TAC Board over the last 12 months.
LOVE the return to analog. no longer brittle and harsh mixes.
SITUATION
Wanted to move ON re a replacement mixer (TAC is now 12 years old)
and am requesting any thots from those that have crossed this bridge..
possiblities
a) Dangerous Audio 16 to 2 Buss
Pro.: no mixer. clean, not too expensive
Con.: by the time u pay for the monitor section and more channels, costs
goes up
difficult to multi track drums for eg.. need lots of Pres to do direct input
into M/track
What about surround for film
b) not sure of any analog mixers to consider.
The AMEK NEVE Media 51 is a consideration
but no true total recall, just lights that tell u where you should be on the
eqs/sends etc..
re: sound card
am also considering the RME MADI as a possiblity to get more than 26 outputs
seeing as our beloved EMAGIC does not allow using multiple hardware since
"UP"grading to OSX...
used to do 2 Multifaces to get 56 outs. cant do that in OSX..Boo!
Bought an 002 thinking with a digi HW i could use DAE simultaneous with Core
audio.
was wrong and now have an 002 sitting in the rack purely for Protools
conversion to and from...Logic PRo...
anyone know what the deal with WAVEBURNER is now there is no OSX WB
support....
Thanks very much

Hello everyone,
I used to be a regular on the LUG until Apple
bought Emagic. I decided to stay on the p.c. platform (mistake) and use
Cubase SX. Well, now I'm considering buying a Mac for more stability. I
never really feel the p.c. is "not" going to crash. It wil at some
point
when you least expect it. I'm also looking to move back to Logic since now I
imagine it's really solid being specific to the Mac.
I do have a few questions, but I'll give you some
details about my studio first: I'm planning on doing most of my mixing
outside of Logic (via a Mackie 8 bus) so I'm mostly using Logic as a tape
deck with the exception of some effects and a few VST instruments. I'm using
a MOTU 24 i/o core system.
I was looking to buy the new G5 dual 1.8 gig with 1
gig of ram. I was also looking to buy a Glymph desktop firewire drive for my
audio. How do you suspect this system would work for me with Logic Pro? What
do I need to know about buying a Mac? Is it really set up right out of the
box? Can I run other programs on it (not while Logic is running) without it
screwing with my audio set-up (final cut for example)? I ask becasue right
now I have a audio only p.c. and it still has problems:-( I'm not looking to
use it for web, just a few other apps.
How does the MOTU stuff work with Logic and Mac?
Basically I want a system that functions. I know nothing is perfect, but I
want to be a little closer to peace and serenity:-))
I appreciate any help in this matter. Thanks!!

Hi there, lightpipe,
I'll try to answer what I can:

I'd look into the PCI compatibility of your 2408 system with the G5. If
you're talking about the latest revision dual 1.8, then you may be in
luck as it's classic PCI, similar to the G4 systems.
As for the Glyph firewire solution, unless you need RAID or
hot-swappable drives, there are cheaper cases out there from other
reputable manufacturers such as Lacie or ADS Tech. A lot of money can
be saved by buying a case without a hard drive and adding it yourself.

I run a Powerbook as my main mac. I also run Microsoft Office, Toast,
Virtual PC, Photoshop, and several other apps. I never have to worry
about messing up my audio setup as OS X is not as picky as OS 9 was
with configuration (i.e. loading system extensions, etc).

I use a MOTU 828 firewire device with Logic on my G4. I have had zero
problems over the past few years due to this combo. I'm unsure of what
the PCI performance has been, so you should investigate that.

Get at least 2 gigs of RAM for the G5/Logic combo.

What do I need to know about buying a Mac? Is it really set up right out of
the box?
Get a 250 GB internal SATA HD with the G5 and use the first partition (less
than 25% of HD space) for audio exclusively, or get a second HD (10,000 rpm
Raptor?). Use partition 2 for system and applications and partition 3 for
data. You should also read up on how OSX.3.5 works - the UNIX thing. It's
different from OS 9
Can I run other programs on it (not while Logic is running) without it
> screwing with my audio set-up (final cut for example)?

I'm using a MOTU 828 mkii with no problems (latest drivers) and often have
other progs open with Logic (including Web stuff, Indesign, Photoshop, Word
etc). Works much (!!!) better than on my previous G4 Sawtooth 400.
Have fun

Why do people buy GLymph? You can go to Lacie.com and get a 120gb firewire
for $150 or so. I have two of them (I bought 1 to 3 years ago) and never any
problems.

My understanding is that Glymph drives are specifically designed for
audio. That's what I've been told. Their firmware is specific for aduio
applications.
How many hours a day would you say you use your Lacie? I'm looking for
reliability since I log atleast 3-4 hours a day. I've heard other people
mention Lacie, but I know little about them.
