Forum Index | Read L-OT: Policy/Rules Messages Threads Digests | Post New Message | Search! Hi ot-ers,
I seem to recall that the use of a graphic eq to deal with room
resonances, esp. standing waves, was found wanting in the late 1970's.
If you mix to a room with peaks and troughs which are compensated for
with eq, is the resultant mix what you want it to be - and in another
room (with an 'ideal' flat response) would it sound the same? My friend
says it will, using simple logic (not the programme!). I have a
sneaking feeling it won't though I am weakening in this opinion.
While I have your full attention ;-) I have a peak in my room
around 90Hz - and a trough centered on about 130. The room is
unfortunately not far off a cube. L and W are 9 feet, and the ceiling
slopes from 8 foot to 7 foot 6. The walls are 4" deep stud partition
with 2 x sheets of plasterboard + skim, filled with rockwool. Suspended
timber floor. I have floor to ceiling screens I use in the studio when
tracking; when not they fill the wall opposite the speakers - JBLs
4031s. The speakers are fairly close to the wall / corners - and have
to stay there.
Questions : would two triangular rockwool filled traps behind the
speakers help? They could only be about 3 foot high, and approx. 1ft 6"
x 1 ft 6" on the two smaller sides.
Or - should I try a 4" deep bass trap, filled with rockwool, and 7 foot
long, 2 foot wide, fronted with 3/8th ply, sealed all round, and fixed
to the ceiling above and between the speakers? Other than this being
elsewhere on the ceiling I can't fix traps eslewhere.
Regards,
Mike.

It's strange your right. I dunno whether you just got a bad seed and manager
or what. I have never had this much problems with them. Talk to someone
different and get to another manager and keep working your way up. Just have
the web site pulled up in front of you with shipping costs and ram ect.. If
you bother them enough they will give in. Also threaten to call the district
attorneys office in California to make a complaint about them, sometime they
are told to give in if something like that is brought up.

Most places wont let you do this. Ever try to cancel as order from Dell?

It's on macmall's page

Unfortunately this is true of a lot of computer and electronics online
companies, it's not a shady thing it's just fact.

Why is it obvious they open every computer?
You know this is just part of trend of dishonesty on the part of many
companies. I called AOL tech support and then they shuttled me to a free
offer of $25
for AOL net use, I never used it, then i started seeing $9 charges on my
credit card. I called and told them to cancel it, and they said they would
and
refund my $25, but nothing ever came. I called the credit card company and
they
said Microsoft and McAfee are doing the same kind of scam - sign you up for
something free then start charging you.
Regarding your situation - I woiuld fight it 100% with your credit card
company. First of all - document your story - with dates and times. You DID
call to
cancel the order. You expressed to them that you wanted to cancel the order.
You might also check to see if it was really shipped before you called them.
And then document the rest of the story. Also, check their website or
catalog
to read the fine print on shipping charges. Does it say "shipping and
handling"?
Overall you have a good case for "breach of contract" in a sense,
because
they charged more than they said they would.
You can also call Macmall and tell them you are willing to pay $X (their
price minus $100 or whatever), and if they don't like it, you plan to cancel
the
whole thing and buy from a competitor. From their point of view its better
to
take a hit but still sell you the computer - cuz they are still making money
and having more volume pass through their hands.
For comparison, I bought a $500 item from ZZounds ( a music item) and it
didn't quite work the way I wanted, and I returned it within 30 days and
they gave
me 100% refund (including the shipping, even though I used it for a week).
So
a few reputable companies exist.

Hi Mike,
EQing the monitor system with an RTA will only bring the system flat in a
specific zone (the "Sweet Spot") and you want that to be where
your head is.
BUT, it will do nothing about nulls and standing waves. Then, when you EQ
the rig to sound like "a typical stereo" system, those problems
are going to
be virtually unbearable.

A symmetrical room is the worst thing you can have. So, rather than placing
traps around, I think you should try to think of ways to break up the shape.
You could hang some pieces of carpet in strips about a foot high and several
feet long, staggered to form an uneven grid pattern on the ceiling, and you
could try to build a "fake" wall at one end to angle it some. You
could
build some baffles of 1"x4" and mount them along the side and back
walls to
help disperse the sound waves. The idea is to bounce the sound around to
infinity before it centers on one place (standing waves) and totally misses
another (nulls). Traps might help somewhat, but they won't stop the
problems caused by the symmetry of the room... Think of your speakers as
pool ball ejectors, and imagine where the balls would go given no gravity
and just bouncing around like Super-Balls until they lose all their energy.
Also, you might try moving the speakers so they aren't meeting on axis at
exactly 90 degrees (since you say they're in the corners) and focus them so
the axes meet just behind your head, when sitting in the sweet spot. Carpet
the floor if it isn't... With a room that small and that shape, you
probably won't be able to rid yourself of every problem. I started my
studio in a room about that size and quickly realized it simply wasn't going
to work and took over my entire basement (about 30'x60'), put a fake wall in
at about 55 degrees to one corner and facing an alcove at about 125 degrees,
so the sound never comes back on itself. A lot of work, but worth it. :

I have a dual 500mhz G4 and was thinking of upgrading my cpu. I mainly
use os9 (and will most of the time on this machine) so I was
considering getting a proccessor upgrade for it. Will I notice a big
improvement if I get something like the powerlogix Dual 1.4ghz
upgrade? I thought about getting the quicksilver Dual 1ghz but didn't
see much advantage. Thanks in advanced.

Generally most surveys of these kind of board upgrades conclude that
it´s quite expensive for a moderate increase in power. You might do
better waiting patiently for a secondhand faster G4 at a good price.
A lot of people -myself included - are waiting to buy a G5 soon.
I have a large music archive –my own compositions- which I need to
catalogue in table form, listing length, comments, etc. I suppose
this is easy enough with Excel, Word or similar, but it would be
great to have an application that can do this and play back the .aiff
Audio files too without having to switch applications or go into the
Finder. Maybe there´s a way to link a list of Audiofiles to their
disk location for Preview playback, I don´t know.
I´m checking out Library Monkey for instance
http://monkey-tools.com/pages/products/librarymonkey.html
but I find it rather expensive at $399. Most of the iTunes utilities
seem to be mp3-focussed, and I want to be able to make my own table
rather than use iTunes comments fields.
Any suggestions from the Media Pros out there please?
Thanks!!

I am new to the 828, can anyone recommend a good online forum or list
for either MOTU in general, or specifically the 828? (I was very
surprised to not see one at MOTU's website.) I am having trouble
updating the driver (to 1.09) and CueMix (to the new version, which
includes what looks to be a very cool talkback implementation). The
installer reports success, but nothing is updated.
Thanks!

Hi brian.
If you uninstall from the installer before you install 1.09 that may help.

Good call! Worked like a charm - the driver is reported at v1.09, and
CueMix Console is now showing the new features. I'm going to email MOTu
tech support to advise them that this should be part of the
instructions.
Thanks!

Hi Group,
I'm looking at upgrading my Delta-66 audio cards to something more serious.
I've been
watching the Motu stuff with interest, but recently found the Onyx line from
Mackie and
wondered if any fellow Logic users were considering using one of these as an
interface.
http://www.mackie.com/newproducts/onyx.html
I'm looking at either a 1220 or 1620.
I currently use a Behringer mixer for managing connections to my interface
but this would
eliminate it and give me an analog upgrade in the process.
Opinions?
rob
Hi Rob,
I haven't seen or used the Onyx yet. I generally think Mackie
makes good stuff at a great price (I own an 8 Bus and a small 1402 mixer).
They have been reliable for me. I do also own a Motu card which has worked
out really nice for me. I'm very happy with their product. I also own a
RME-Hammerfall Multiface which is also a great card. Very reliable.

hey LP,
The RME-Hammerfalls and MOTU 828mkII's are high on my wanted list. The
Onyxes look like they'd be an excellent cross-breed of analog mixer
and digital interface though. My one concern is that I'm not really
sure how the signal chain in the Onyx is laid out. They mention 2
outputs for monitoring, are those the only two outputs? That might be
a bit limiting for doing surround mixes.
anyway, these things are brand new and possibly not even available
yet. I was just hoping to drum up a bit of discussion about them as
they look like an intriguing bit of hardware.

Hello,
I just finished setting up my new G5 2hz to run both PT HD Accel2 and Logic
6.3.3.
Why is it that everytime I try to launch Logic I get this message "file
def can not be
found."
Can someone please explain this to me? What must I do to get Logic to run
the way it
should? I also started getting a -7400 error message when initializing TDM
on Logic.
I really dont want to let go of Logic but I also need to move on with my
productions.
I looked at what causes the -7400 message in the digi website and I followed
all
instructions to make it work right but I still get it together with that
"file def" thing.
I can still run Logic if I choose to continue but no sound is heard.

you'll hit a much wider audience if you repost it to the main LUG list.

No, this is the Off-Topic list (hence the OT in the name); the main LUG
list is located here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/logic-users/
Be prepared for a huge increase in emails; the main LUG has many more
members than the OT list, and averages a hundred or more posts per day,
whereas the OT list is lucky to get 10 (which is why we recommend
reposting your problem there - there's bound to be someone on the LUG

Hm, I don't recall seeing mod-wheel specifically. Maybe if someone
could hack up a midi driver for an analog joystick you could graft one
of those onto your keyboard. ;) (It's a "Thrustmaster"!)
seriously though, I've got a Korg Kaoss Pad which also transmits MIDI
control values in two axes. It would do the job of a pitchbend and mod
wheel but you'd have to program Logic or your MIDI interface to
recognize the values it's emitting. You might be able to find the
first generation Kaoss pads on Ebay for a decent price...
