I bought a new Ibook and it came with a Panther Upgrade CD only. It will not
allow you to install Panther from scratch. You have to install Jaguar first
then use the upgrade disk.
Does anyone know how to easily upgrade os X on a computer that does not have
internet? I have a music system where I removed the modem to put a stealth
port, and another internet machine. I just saw last night that there is a
new
upgrade 10.3.3 and I uploaded it automatically. However, it seems to be a
big
hassle to try to manually find all the updates (sometimes there are 6 or 7
at
once, to various system components from Apple). This seems like a common
problem
for music people with dedicated systems.

Just look on the downloads page, you can dl the 10.3.3 update on your
internet comp and then transfer it to your music comp.

Hi Guys,
I've been recommended the third party utility Cocktail for OSX system
maintenance. Do I really need that for doing music production on a G5 or is
Cocktail just for "Mac freaks suffering from paranoia"?
Best wishes

Can you be more specific?
Suppose you want to time correct a beat.
This is what I do. I make a rough cut of the
audio file on the arrange page. Then click on the section
to bring up the sample editor. Then you can move the
starting point, but make sure you select the menu option
NOT to update arrange position. Before or after, you open
the event listeditor to move that audio to 1 1 1 1 (or use shift drag
and look at the popup event list for that one item)
This is an area of Logic which is clumsy. I really wish they would
overhaul it. Make a grid, be able to move things around on the sample
window to snap to the grid. Otherwise its amazingly time consuming
and picky work.
It helps to have some keycommands set up, with different zooms, move
to front or back of selection, etc.

Cocktail is a great system-optimization utility to have... it really
has nothing to do with whether you're using your machine for audio,
art, video, writing, whatever... there's nothing paranoid about having
a "well-groomed" system, is there?

Of course not ;-) I guess I'll put Cocktail on my shopping list then. Thank
you for the feedback!

Use Yasu, it's free and does practically the same. And yes, you should
use it once every couple of weeks or so. It keeps your system healthy.

As nice as Yasu is, and a price that can't be beat, it really doesn't
do nearly as much as Cocktail does...

Oh man.... Changing guitar strings and backing up data is already stealing
too much time from creating music ;-) Why can't computers maintain
themselves and just work?

How about Onyx? It does everything that Cocktail does, and it's free.

Ok, but what does Cocktail do that Yasu doesn't that is essential to
keep your Mac healthy? I mean, sure it's nice you can custimize the
Finder and the Dock, but do you need Cocktail for that? On the other
hand, it's nice the app does it and it's not so expensive.

I highly recommend Macaroni for automatically maintaining your mac. Its
$10.

Never heard of it, but thanks for the lead - I'll have to d/l it and
give it a whirl...

Take another look at the Cocktail feature list - the UI section is but
one small portion of the list. Networking, cache cleaning, unlocking
files... Cocktail does quite a bit, and well.

These may be elementary questions:
If I insert a plug-in (ESX, EVP, Mini-Moog, etc) in an instrument
track I can only record midi data. How do I record it as an audio
track? (How do I get instrument input to an audio track input from my
plug-ins?)Do I need to output and patch back in through my patch-bay?
( I need to conserve processor power. If I can record my virtual
instruments one at a time to an audio track and close them, It would
help.)
System:
Motu 2408MKIII, Express XT, G4 OSX, Logic 6 Pro
Can anyone help..........?
Thanks

Solo the virtual instrument channel/track and "bounce to disc"
(done by
clicking the little "bnc" button at the main stereo out). Then put
the
resulting audio file on an audio track.
> Do I need to output and patch back in through my patch-bay?
This is another method. Some people simply "re-record" the output
to an
audio track because it's a faster way to convert virtual midi instruments
midi tracks to audio.

Freeze! I just scanned the Emagic pages and found no indication that the
freeze function is not a part of your version as well (Express)

Fine. But the question still remains: "which system maintenance
function do
we need for using G5:s for music production"? Usually a computer is
getting
better with audio if you keep the system slim and tidy.

Look up freeze in the manual
look up bounce in the manual

Hi Wolfgang,
Open up Logic Pro, and under the Help menu, open "Logic Audio
Help". In
the search window, enter "bounce". For my copy of Logic Audio
6.3.1, it
contains all the info one would need to solve your problem.

Hi folks,
Well, for those of you anxiously waiting to hear the music I've commented on
both musically and technically to find out if I can back up my words with
actual music, now's your chance to tear me to shreds. ;) My new CD called
"Midnight Roses" is finally online at CDBaby.com and will soon be
available
at most other music distributors such as Amazon, Borders, Virgin Media,
Waldenbooks, CDNow, etc. It's been a long time coming, but taking the time
to do it right has been worth it and I'm very proud of the result. Right
now, 2 minute sound clips of all 11 songs can be heard in both Hi-Fi and
Lo-Fi streaming audio (128kbps stereo and 32 kbps mono for dialup users) at
<http://www.cdbaby.com/zeekduff> Hopefully, someone will purchase it.
:)
I'll be revealing all of the gear, techniques, and "secrets" of
bringing
this project from a vague idea to completion on my web site in the coming
weeks, but first, I have a lot of follow-up work to do for distribution and
promotion. So, if anyone has any specific questions in the meantime, I'll
be happy to answer them as best I can if you contact me personally.
This notice is going out to roughly 20 pro-audio forums, so I apologize in
advance to those who are going to see it more than once, but all of these
groups deal with some aspect of creating music, and were/are an integral
part of the process. In making my first real (non-mp3) solo CD, doing it
right, finding and learning to use certain tools, all of these groups of
people have contributed enormously, and I just couldn't have done it without
the people here who freely gave of their knowledge and experience over the
past 5 years, and for that, I'm truly grateful. Thank you, one and all! :)
Okay, that's it, I'll be around as time permits, and keep making music!!!
Best regards,
...z
The trouble with doing something right the first time
is that nobody appreciates how difficult it was...
Zeek Duff's CD "Midnight Roses" is now HERE!!!

I doubt anyone who has ever read his stuff will ever think about that. For
me personally his materials have always been the greatest help, plus
following his advises led me and my mates to constructing truly amazingly
sounding studios (decent clock generators, Benchmark Audio's DAC-1, etc.).
Also I had a pleasure of hearing some works before and after his mastering,
and I must admit I was positively shocked though I usually have quite a lot
of healthy skepticism when talking about big names in the industry.

**<Bleep>ing GarageBand!** Apple Computer today announced the
availability of Bleeper, a free innovative Audio Units plug-in for
use with Apple's entry-level digital music program, GarageBand.
In a technological first for a plug-in designed for a music-
creation program, Bleeper integrates with Mac OS X's built-in
Speech Recognition technology to detect and "bleep" potentially
profane or obscene language in speech or singing in real time.
Bleeper can be applied either to existing audio tracks (to create
"radio mixes" of your GarageBand songs) or to vocals being
recorded in real time (so parents and teachers don't have to
worry about children creating potentially offensive material
with GarageBand). You can even apply Bleeper to instrumental
tracks, although the results can be a little unpredictable.
Bleeper itself is highly configurable, enabling music creators
to insert silence, a wide variety of substitution tones, or even
vanity noises whenever Bleeper detects a potentially offensive
word.

I guess this funny app would work with Logic as well. I wonder if you can
edit the list of "bad words"? Don't have the time to check it out
right now
so I thought I should see if someone here on the list have tried Bleeper?
