If you are going Intel:
Asus P4P800 is cheap(ish) and good.
Asus P4C800E Deluxe is widely regarded as one of the best but it is pricier.
Get a P42.8C/3.0C processor and 1 - 2 GB of DDR400 (brand name)
Decent case and powersupply is a very good idea IMHO
If you are going AMD there are a bunch of choices according to processor
(Athlon/Athlon64)
RME forums - rme-audio.forum on news.x-networks.de has recommendations
from users on what to choose.
You could also look on www.TomsHardware.com/Anandtech.com for
recomendations.
The choice could depend on your sound hardware and what is working for
people with that card/Interface.

What should I buy if I need a low latency 2 in/out soundcard. It´s
just for home recording but it´s absolutely a must that it´s
stable. Latency should be low enough for playing softsynths, I seem to
remember that the Delta Audiophile is pretty good, is that still the case,
they´re very cheapnow.

I couldn't be happier with my Audiophile 24/96 card. The latency is so
low that I routinely play softsynths in realtime without noticing any
delay (I use the Audiophile's MIDI I/O as well as audio I/O), and I
have zero stability issues (using the CoreAudio drivers in OS X; YMMV
if you're not using OS X yet).

I'll test that now that I've got Panther. BTW, the version I use is the one
that has the Reason-like icon.

I just loaded Logic 6 into my 400 MHz G4 running OSX (Panther) and
unfortunately the Midi doesn't work. I am using a MOTU micro express
with a serial card (gee three). I downloaded the updated drivers for
both the Motu and the Gee Three card but unfortunately the Apple audio
midi setup doesn't seem to recognize the drivers. Any ideas out there?
Thanks in advance,

How does it compare to Quad Fromage if you know that one or are they two
different beasts. I am very tempted to buy this one to get the pre-order
discount but on the other hand how many filters do you need. I have
everything else by PSP except for the delays and to me they are one of the
best but so is Ohm Force.

When I tried the Quad Frohmage it enabled me to get a very hard and funny
techno sound on drum beats. Example:
http://www.boysen.se/audio/hard_techno_rock.mp3
The PSP Nitro is very different IMO. It seems to me that its strange is
dynamic filtering synced to song tempo. It can provide almost "3D
ambience".
I also have an external analog filter bank, the Akai MFV42, and with the PSP
Nitro I can get those sounds right away without having to route audio
externally through the Akai and record it back again.
I guess you know there is a demo of the PSP Nitro available? It's quite CPU
intensive so in praxis it will only be used with my G5.
Best wishes

Getting frustrated trying to work with drum loop regions within
Logic 4.8 on windows ME. trying to follow manual to no avail. I am
importing in a .wav file, easily copying but can't move the regions
by 1 click like the manual suggests, to get them to line up. Also
tried using start and end positions within event list, but I can't
change start and stop position. Anyone with experience please
help. I have only used Logic at this point to record "live"
musicians. I want to get into more "remixing" etc. Thanks! for any
help.
Make sure you have your environment tempo set to match the temp of the
loop you're importing.

Great for

This may not be what you are looking for, but seeing as nobody else
has replied - I have the 320 GB Big Disk from LaCie, and am very
happy with it. Gives me at least the same track count, used with my
laptop, as the internal 7200 drive on my desktop, and it is "only"
the FW 400 version. It is very quiet, although it does get quite
warm. I think it is safe to assume that the 500/1TB FW 800 models are
even better ...

Is this from an installer other than the one you get by purchasing
Panther? A special CD they send because you bought a machine that came
with Jaguar after Panther was released, maybe? I ask because there is
no separate Panther Upgrade product; when you buy Panther it's the full
$129, and you get the full version whether it's a new purchase or you
already own Jaguar, 10.0, etc.
Confusedly yours,
Brian

Emagic,
Please read the letter below. It pretty much describes how we all feel
about Logic's Audio Capabilities for working seamlessly. Please believe
me when I say that more than a few hundred people that need what this
message describes.
I still love logic, but I moved from PC to Mac, and I really loved Sound
Forge for audio editing. After moving to the Mac I haven't found a
program that allows me to work as fast as I could on PC, but the idea of
having sample accurate cutting of audio in the arrange window and
allowing us to move audio to any location we want, i.e. not limited to
tick mark resolution, is awesome!
Thanks for tools,
Paul Stephenson

For me the partykiller is the lack of sample-accuracy in the
arrange window. I want to zoom all the way in, make my cut
precisely where the zero-cross is, grab the edge and drag the
soundbite to some easily discernable predefined beat on the
time ruler, flash to the other edge, cut it at the zero cross
closest to the same time division, zoom out.
In PT, or Cubase, or DP, I can do the above in about 5
seconds in the same window, and have a seamless, popless
loop placed exactly where I need it. In Logic, it takes 5x longer
and I have to keep switching out to the sample editor, and I'm
never 100% confident I'm actually at the right beat division
until I press play and hear it.
So yes, I can do it in Logic, I can't argue that it's 'fine'. It's
just that I cut my teeth on editors that are 'exemplary', and
I miss them at times.
Respectfully,
u b i k

i've heard that disk utilities aren't as "required" as they were

are disk "utilities" necessary-- outside osX's "disk

or diskwarrior necessary after the move from os 9?

Been looking into ASIO drivers for a Soundblaster Value Card
in my Dell Dimension.
I'd like to install the 'KX Drivers' (ASIO) but have read
they won't work with a 'Dell' Soundblaster because of the
way Dell "configures" their cards ......
Does anyone have any experience or opinions on this ???
Thanks, ck
I could just get another card but for what I'm doing
(home/band recording) the SBLive is fine ......
Diskwarrior 100% YES. There is nothing like diskwarrior to keep your
filesystem running smooth. It's good to run every other month or so.
Norton is only useful for repairing files. It's not reliable for other
repairs and apple does not advise running speed disk. It could actually
make your computer slower.

i've never used the kx asio drivers, but if they don't work for oyu, try
asio4all. i'd post the link, but i don't have web access at the moment.
search on google, it'll be the first hit.

Well, I can only speak from experience and my OS X machine gets a
speed boost after every defrag. I do it every two weeks and it works
like a charm. And boom, faster working. Where is all this slowing
down stuff coming from? Did someone actually try doing it and found
it to be slower? Am I not paying attention to my system that I use
about 15 hours a day? Do I not know what it actually feels like for
the tasks I'm performing.. well... everyone judge for themselves, but
don't say things in a way where they sound like a fact. If it's your
experience that it's slower say so, because my experience is
certainly the opposite.
Cheers
Hans
I know several of you use Metric Halo interfaces, and they just released
a new driver that is supposed to fix all the issues with Logic.
