I agree but through this thread I learned about the Nano Head which
sounds like it is something I have been looking for for as long as I
have been playing the electric guitar.
I absolutely love my Digitech Genesis 3... it's very, very versatile...
andthe
SPDIF out makes it a dream to work with in Logic.

for this kind of sound ive actually played around with a Marshall
compressor pedal after the OD pedal. The compression boosts your
sustain (obviosuly), so even when you flub a bit you still have signal
in there to make it all sound continuous.
of course, you could just be a flawless player (unlike me) and have
perfectly executed arpgiation every time. but im lazy, i prefer to buy
gear instead of practice alot :)

of course you played with the Zvex OOh Wah and Seek-Wah for this too
:) right? right ? those things are awesome, when i have more
disposable income and less microphones and mic-pres to buy im getting
the whole zvex line.

yeah, i try to explain this to guitarists and get blank stares.
Nowadays having an amp above 30 watts is mostly a waste, unless you
have a big soundproofed iso-booth. even on stage i never could turn my
Pro Reverb (i think its about 30 watts) above 3 or 4 because of the PA
mic'in and the tubes dont REALLY start to cook until 5 or more.
I have an old Ampeg V-4 that i got modded with a Master switch so i
can actually crank the preamp tube volume to max and control the
output with the master, it sounds SO unbelievable. its a shame the
powersoak pedals kill tone because a solution like that without having
to mod every old Fender you get would be great.

i had a first gen 10 gig'er that was perfect until i dropped it really
hard about a month ago, and then i got a completely new one on my
warranty. never had a battery problem with it at all.

Funny, i work and play in NYC almost every single day, up town,
midtown and downtown and i havent seen a single poster. he would have
to be REALLY mad to put them ALL around the city. im not sure if you
have ever been here but its kind of big.
For anorak completeness, I can bear witness to Roger Mayer
pedals. Visually unique with their distinctive, 1950's
futurist styling, they're the pride of my unused equipment
collection.
BBC trained, Mayer was Hendrix's white-coat, tech guy in
the 60's. God knows if you can get them anymore but in the
late 80's, he was still hand building them with some obscure
old transistor parts he'd saved. They contained 'Germanium'
(or something) - I still don't know what this does but it
sounded impressive and it was missing from my life.
I managed to get Mr. Mayer's number from a shop in London's
Denmark St., and was invited down to his home in some
godforsaken suburb, possibly 'Staines', to audition the
pedals. He and his American wife even picked me up from
the train station.
However, once on site, they then proceeded to got me
leglessly drunk and the wife mauled me every time I tried
to leave (apparently she did it to everyone, sad really..
I suspect the toll of 60's hedonism - or living in Staines
- nevertheless, a scary bag-lady ceaselessly fondled
me in front of her oblivious husband as I struggled to write
down what he told me of Jimi Hendrix's preferred string
gauges.
Me & Roger jammed for a while (terribly), I left him my
Crybaby wah-wah to customize - it subsequently had a nicer,
throaty sound and an extra switch to flip sweep ranges,
and when his Mrs at last had to empty her bladder, we made
a dash to the car and I got a lift back to the station.
Anyway, (you still reading this?) two pedals of his which
I tried, later bought, and which I've never gotten
close to with anything else except, ironically, some
software fx, were 'Octavia' - fuzz with envelope/harmonic
doubler, and 'Axis' - overdrive. Listen to Hendrix's second
album and Ernie Isley's searing 70's Strat textures and
you'll know.
With my Tele & valve Fender SuperChamp, they're creamy,
overdrive heaven. However, having only the attention span
of a hamster, it takes me so long, faffing about, setting
it all up that on the rare occasions I need guitar, I now
just reach for the 'GuitarPort' and have done with it.
I saw an ad recently for a convolution mic or pre-amp
processor - I wonder if one could run these old boxes through
some kind of convolution process? Maybe that 'soon to be
released' Tascam convolving VST thingie will allow us to
capture stompbox er, footprints...?

That's my favorite! I've had it for many years and love the sound of it. But
it only sounds good on a strat playing the neck pickup. The tone filter knob
of the guitar does also have a great impact on the Octavia envelopes. This
pedal is very dynamic and can really make a strat more expressive ;-)

I have to agree with that statement if all of what you say is true, and it
appears to be. However, it was a featured news item on several national
news broadcasts. Seems to me if there's nothing to it, Apple would have a
pretty good lawsuit against not only the NYC poster guy, but the networks
who didn't bother to check the facts, as well. However, I still have
absolutely no use for one, so give it to someone who wants it, Dennis. I'll
take the money it costs, though... ;)

Yes, ofcourse....The Seek and Ooh Wah are great. I went with the Robotalk
because the sound is kind of frantic and I liked that. I'm still going to
pick up an Ooh wah. They do different things with different flavors:-))

Yeah, people still think they need 200 watts for a gig. I try to explain
it to my students but they don't listen...In one ear and out the other. They
see their favorite guitarist from Disturbed using a couple of stacks and are
convinced this is the only way to go:-)) I love when they get huge amps and
only can play them barely on one. They ask why their tone isn't very
good:-))

A tube screamer will work. If it's the early Ibanez sound you're looking
for check out the Maxon OD-9. They have the original chips that are
identical to the original Ibanez. Another solution which I like to use
instead of overdrive is a booster pedal. Not the treble booster you use, but
the Fulltone Fatboost. You can get some gentle overdrive out of it without a
huge increase in volume if that's what you want. It also has a tone knob on
it. Even when it's (tone knob) neutral you get more body from your guitar.
One great thing about it is it doesn't add as much color to your signal as
say a tube screamer would. It may not be right for you, but you might want
to investigate it a bit. www.fulltone.com

Oh no! Do you mean to tell me that the networks actually broadcast a
news item that was erroneous or slanted or inflated purely for the
purpose of making it appear to be a story? I thought such things
could never happen!

This is where people go wrong. Thinking that apple would actually be
in any way interested in pursuing such a law suit. Whether the guy
has a point or the whole thing is completely fatuous (and IMHO it is
the latter) to pursue something like that legally would only give the
gadfly more opportunity to do them damage regardless of the outcome.
Even if a jury agreed with me that it was ridiculous and they settled
in favor of apple (which is in no way assure, remember this is a
country where you can sue a restaurant for giving you a cup of hot
coffee without checking first to see if you are so stupid you will
pour it into your own lap) any money from a settlement in apple's
favor would still not cover a fraction of their legal fees. And
coming down hard on the pest to make an example of him would not do
anything for their image. It is a lose lose situation for apple and
really the only option they have is the course they are taking and
that is to do what they can to mollify the joker and wait for it to
blow over.

Hi,
that's exactly what my booster does! I bought it because it has an
aptly named "Balls" knob which adds (or subtracts) body to your
sound,
depending on what amp you play. It doesn't colour the sound much at
all. Because it sounds so much better, somehow more focused and bigger
than the Pro Junior should really sound like, with the pedal, I keep it
engaged all the time. That's why I need an overdrive option on top of
that, which will give me additional distortion without increasing the
overall volume even more.
Thanks for the Maxon tip!
Cheers,
Recky

now here's a conversation I can jump into. You are so right. I play at a
small club every week and they asked me what amp to get for the backline and
I told them an older 70's fender deluxe. They got this new Deluxe which is
way louder than an old deluxe, the one with the silver top and a distortion
channel. I can't play through it unless I put the volume on 1.5. No tone
whatsoever.
I started bringing my silvertone head that used to be in the 2x12 cab and
plugging it into the deluxe's speaker. Much better. You can crank without
being loud. Sometimes I even use a Magnatone custom 410 which is about 15
watts of class A. Great tone and the perfect volume for a gig where there's
a PA in small room.
The other thing about this is I see a lot of dudes and dudesses with their
amps on the floor. Anyone who does this always plays too loud and bright
because they aren't hearing any hi end or tone from the amp as it's pointing
at their calves. I always put my amp on a chair behind me. Better for
controlled feedback too... I saw a great band tonight and lo and behold the
guy had his amp pointing at his shins and he was 5xs louder than anyone else
in the band and the sound guy had him turned off on the board. It ruined the
gig.

How about the Lovetone Brown Source. Better bottom end preservation than a
tube screamer. I have a 1979 tube screamer and it is a little light in the
loafers compared to the brown source. Expensive, but worth it if you need a
real tube amp tone at a low volume.

I have a pro reverb too, blackface, sounds amazing... I actually prefer it
on a chair than pointing at my head from the floor. Takes out any strange
resonance from the amp touching the stage and keeps me from being TOO in
love with myself.

surely your not REALLY a guitar player if your concerned with being
too in love with yourself.
besides man, its not yourself your in love with, its the tone of your
guitar/amp that your in love with. at least thats my story.

ahh, see that's it...
I concentrate on making everyone else sound good, not myself. Then I
automatically sound good.

Hi Chris,
Don't know why it happens, but it's always the same way here after
upgrading/installing/reinstalling any system software, and it (nearly)
always gets to normal after 2 or 3 days of use, provided you choose
your setting as many times a day as you get to it... Not a reasonable
explanation, I know, but this is how it works here.

a couple things may be the cause. if you use FileVault i have read
that it tends to eat user preferences randomly. another one may be
that eithe r the folder your trying to set prefs for i slocked. you
can un-lock it by Apple-I for the info screen, and somewhere in the
permissions area click the 'unlock' icon if its locked.
hope that helps

Thanks for the tips guys!!! But, a few people contacted me off-list and I
got the
answer, and it worked!!!!
First, the answer: Delete the hidden file called "DS_Store" in any
folder that is giving
your "View" troubles.... That's it! These files can get corrupted.
You can find these files by using the Finder's search program (COMMAND+F),
and
then adding a second search parameter and make it search for
"invisible" files....
Then, when you find the "DS_Store" file of the folder that is
giving you issues, just
select it and DELETE!!! Problems gone, as a new DS_Store file is created
automatically.... Although I think that you have to logout/login first (that
is what I did
just in case)....
LASTLY, this was a "carry-over" issue that I have been having for
MONTHS, and was
not a result of the upgrade to Panther... I just got sick of it NOW, that's
all!
All is fixed, thanks to the advice!

You know there are some very cool new programs out there now.
Garageband, which I haven't bought...yet...
Mackie has put out Traktion and one of the cool features is the ability
to apply effects to only part of an audio region.
They also announced a bunch of cool new gear at NAMM. All gearheads and
tech-junkies should check it out.
