I am a long time Logic Audio user (started on PC ver 2.0 and
switched to Mac summer 2002) using 5.5.1 now. My long time writing
parter (25 years!!!) is moving to the "other side" of Los Angeles.
He has a G3 - and a limited bugdet. What we are thinking about is
getting a simple audio recording software program on his machine so
I can email files to him (mp3), he can download and insert onto his
machine and record his vocal tracks. Once he's done, he would email
me the file (a wav or aiff file) and I would insert it back into
Logic and finish the tune - or at least get a decent recording of
the tune (we typically have other singers finish the tunes. He
doesn't have the budget for Logic Audio. I know he'll need a
digital interface so he can plug a mic into the computer. Is there
a simple digital audio program for the Mac (OS9) that this list can
reccomend?
Thanks in advance

Programs such as Pro Tools Free are on that site.

No of course not, at least not for the moment. Today, there's no reason to
make any considerations either way, other than OS9 -> OSX perhaps. I am
on
PC and is still using Logic, but I have bought Cubase SX too. And even
though I haven't spent that many hours with Cubase yet, I must say the audio
part in SX feels "better" than in Logic. More solid. Still there's
obvious
things SX lacks wich is so basic in Logic. Logic also solves some audio,
especially the mixer integration more elegant than Cubase. But, ultimately I
think I'll go Cubase sometime in the future, when it has better MIDI support
and Logic for PC is outdated. One thing I don't quite understand though; is
the coming VST3 and AU conquerent systems or wont VST3 ever be released for
OSX?

Hehe! No I don't concider MOTU creme of anything. My experience with MOTU is
rather bad. Poor drivers and terrible or non-existing support. I have sent
emails to MOTU which I think should qualify for the ho ho hotel. ;-)

Yeah, ProTools sounds like a decen solution for your case.
If you want to upgrade a little bit and have more than the 8 tracks
allowed by PT Free, you can find a used Audio Media III card on eBay
(maybe $50), and get ProTools LE ($50).
That should give you 24 tracks.
There. 24 tracks for under $100 :)
I applied for the Cape Town conference and am excited by the possibility of
being flown to South Africa to learn from top producers, maad!
Anyone been to one? Adrian Sherwood was there last year and Mad Lib, Babu,
Cut Chemist etc etc.
Wow!
Hi people, does anybody know how many tracks the Logic can
record simultaneously assuming I have right cards. TIA
>Hi people, does anybody know how many tracks the Logic can

Why is this OT?
Anyway I don't think there is any limit. It is just as many as your
hardware can support AFAIK.
Hi all,
you might enjoy this:
I have a song right now that maxes out the CPU to the full extent
(without overloading, I got it just right...:-). So I thought,
alright, let's look at the process viewer to see what that looks like
memory-wise and just out of curiosity (I'm no expert in these things,
just curious).
Now the process viewer tells me that Logic is using 140 to 160
percent of my CPU. Without being a fully educated mathematician I can
see that this is really well calculated. Does that mean someone came
in here while I was gone and installed another 533 Mhz Chip in my
machine? If so, I would like to stay subscribed to that service and I
will also leave the house a bit more often so those little helpers
have more time to get to what they do.... :-)
Anyway, just a bit funny... :-) at least to someone fiddling with
pixels and sounds all day...
Cheers
Hans
Yeah, here, the CPU monitor in XP's Task Manager often tells a very
different story to that of Logic's - until I discovered this, I didn't
understand
why I got overload warnings when Logic's performance meter was showing
only 25%. There's a whole bunch of CPU hits and spikes that Logic
seems to not register. Best to not rely on Emagic's performance meter
alone.

Does this combo work or is it time to part ways. I haven´t got a
single complaint about the card on Windows but I will crossgrade to a Mac G5
withinthe next 3-6 months and I am starting to prepare for the it. Of course
there´s also the PCI-X issue but only time will tell on that one.

Well, there have been reports of issues with RME products and OSX. I suggest
you do two things:
Wait a while after the G5 comes out and see if any reports (good or bad)
come out.
Check the RME forum for any information - maybe Matthias Carstens will
answer any question you might have there. At the moment, because there are
no G5's out there, it is kind of difficult to know what issues there might
be ;-)
Kind regards

Not sure if this has ever been mentioned, but I still use Zap for
backing up in OS9 from time to time and was wondering if it was worth
putting my hand up to see if we couldn't get a quick recode for OSX.
It would also be cool if it could take care of 32bit freeze files,
which ofcourse, have a lot of silent space and would benefit from the
Zap treatment. [you would expect high pack rates indeed and then when
reloading a job, you wouldn't need to refreeze all those gutsy tracks.
Any thoughts folks?
Matt

I am a songwriter expecting my new G5 to arrive shortly (hope hope).
Looking into Logic to do home-recording of acoustic instruments.
What do I need additionally? I already have a mixer and analog tape
recorder. Will I still need these or will I record and mix on
Logic? Other hardware/software interface? PCI card?
I know this seems very basic, but I am basically confused by all the product
references, etc I see on the LUG.
Please help. Thanks in advance.

If you want audio quality above that offered by the built in audio in your
Mac you will need to find an audio interface that will be compatible with
the as yet unreleased G5 -- this could be PCI (PCI-X even) , Firewire or
USB.
I would definitely hold off on purchasing an interface until it is clear
what is and is not compatible with the new G5 which, going by recent
reports, will not support quite a number PCI based cards (eg Digidesign's
Digi 001, M-Audio Delta series) due to incompatible PCI specs (the gist is
simply that G5 Mac PCI slots are 3.3 Volt only and all 5 Volt PCI cards
are not compatible) .
Some audio interface makers of good repute are RME, MOTU and Digidesign.
.

http://www.rme-audio.de/english/index.htm
http://www.digidesign.com/
RME's recent Hammerfall DSP series are 3.3 Volt and if your budget will
cover them might be worth looking into. MOTU interfaces compatible with the
G5s will no doubt be available soon enough.
The signal chain for decent quality recording acoustic instruments into
Logic is usually something like this:
Microphone --> Mixer --> Audio interface inputs
OR
Microphone --> mic preamp --> [external mixer -->] audio interface
inputs.
If you have been plugging a microphone directly into your mixer it may have
adequate microphone preamps but more expensive outboard pre's will easily
beat most chip based mic pre's you will find in mixers like the Behringer
and Mackie products.
If you are buying Logic Platinum you should get a pretty comprehensive set
of audio processing tools (reverb, delay, dynamics plugins etc) -- not the
very best available but they should get you started.
Regards,
Murray
First you'll need an audio card or interface. Personally i'd highly
recommend investing in a MOTU 828 or 828 mkii (£800ish - I've found
outboard gear to
be more reliable and far less noisy than putting all the pressure on my
mac).
This gives you 8 inputs/outputs, two of which have phantom power and mic
preamps. You can then record a live mix straight into logic just as you
would a
digital 8 track (if possible you should partition your hard drive or
install a second hard drive to store audio files but this isn't too
important). As
long as you don't mind mixing in software this way you wouldn't need a
mixing
desk.
If you're partial to hardware like myself, digital mixers are getting
cheaper
that are designed to work with programs like logic (some have built in audio
interfaces too but I think they're still expensive), I invested in Logic
control six months ago and find it's made me much faster and more productive
when
working with logic 6.
Of course you could still use your mixing desk if you wanted by connect it's
outputs to the MOTU's inputs giving you the benefits of both worlds!
If you still want to use the analog tape recorder (i.e if you're feeling
nostalgic! ;) ) and it has smpte you could sync it with logic but this kind
of
defeats the object..

Hi,
I have MOTU 896 and it has built-in Mike Pres.
I am happu with it.
Check out some of the recordings that I made with it here;
http:yavuz.dhs.org
Then got music section and listen to "Halay" and "Lost in the
City".
They are recorded straight into Logic thru MOTU 896.
Check out MOTU 896 here;

Good Luck.

I'm a singer/songwriter. I work with studios to write songs. I
don't play instruments much, but I can dibble dabble on piano to hear
sounds. So far, how I work is to have the producers give me some
sort of base tracks on a CD and writing melody and lyrics to that and
then record when I get back into the studio. That has worked so
far. But it becomes cumbersome when I want to deviate from the base
track. I want the freedom to arrange things myself as I am working
out the melody and lyrics.
I think Logic can be the solution. I am not looking to have a home
studio. All I need is enough so I can create my own base track and
at some point in the future, I would want to be able to record voice
as well. So, it's pretty basic. I know this is very basic, but it
would allow me to be a much freer artist. Can people tell me what
exactly do I need equipment-wise to do all this? Thanks!
I know this should be an easy question and for the ones that know the
logic 5.5 inside out it is but not for me. I initialy set up logic to
have maximum audio channels of 32. Now I need to add more and I
can't. What I mean by that is that when I "Creat Track with New
Instrument" I get a new track but I do not have mixer channel for it.
It shares the number with other existing track (i.e. audio 32) and I
have no clue how to add it. Can someone please help? As I said I'm
using logic 5.5.
thx a lot !

Select one of the mixer's channel strips, e.g.number 32, and
copy/paste it (make sure View > Lock Positions is not checked, so you
can drag the new copy into its proper place). With the fresh copy
selected, set its 'Cha' parameter (left side of window) to e.g.
'Track 33'. Finally assign your 33rd track to this new object. Done.
BTW, I don't understand why you post this to the L-OT list, as it's
not off-topic at all and thus could have been sent to the LUG.
