This is not a hoax, it's a real virus. <sigh> Some people...
This is confirmed by the website below. Non-Windows machines, of
course, are immune!
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w95.hybris.gen.html
ALL: Do NOT download any email that states 'the real story of
Snow Whites and the seven dwarfs'
I got an email from hahaha@.... When I went to
download it, my virus program detected the infection and I
deleted the file. I replied to the email address and received
this response...rather interesting I thought:

Hello,
You are receiving this message because a email, which
contained
your email address as the return / reply-to address, was sent
to
hahaha@.... This is a list of possible reasons why you
received
this message.
1) You sent an email to hahaha@... to request,
complain or notify
this user that they are SPAMMING, sending an email with a
virus,
sending an email that has content that may not be appropriate
for
minors, to be removed from a mailing list, etc..
2) Someone else sent an email to hahaha@... and they
are using
your email address as their return / reply-to address. If this
is
the case we are sorry that this email was sent to you but
please
do read it as it does contain information about a virus that
is
spreading around the internet that we are trying to stop /
slow
down.
3) You may already be infected with the computer virus for
which this
email is trying to inform you of. This virus (W32.Hybris.gen)
will send a copy of itself to the reply-to address of any
incoming
emails that a infected computer receives. So when you received
another copy of the "SPAM" that this virus sends out from
another
infected computer, the virus sends a copy of itself to
hahaha@... since hahaha@... is the reply-to
address
of the "SPAM" the virus sends out.
The truth about this SPAM, that contains Snowwhite in the
Subject, is
that a virus called W32.Hybris.gen sends out these emails with
attachments
that are also infected with this virus from a already infected
computer
hopping to infect more computers. This virus uses the address
book as well
as scans incoming and outgoing mail and http traffic for email
address
to send a copy of itself to. These emails the virus sends out
use a
fake / spoofed FROM: address of hahaha@... to hide its
tracks.
We registered the domain sexyfun.net in order to provide the
people
of the internet information about this virus as well as tips
on how
to detect, clean, trace and protect yourself from this virus.
Here is a list of other facts that may answer some of your
questions
that you may have already.
1) We do NOT maintain any mailing lists on our system.
2) This user (hahaha) does NOT exist on our system.
3) The email that you got with the From: field of
hahaha@...
did NOT come from sexyfun.net or the hosting companies
network.
This email address was FAKED / SPOOFED.
4) The email you got is in FACT a way for the (W95.Hybris.gen)
virus
to spread itself around the world / Internet like the ILOVEYOU
virus of a few months past.
5) If you would look at the Received: line of the FULL email
header, it
will tell you the real IP / Computer name that has sent you
this
virus, which is most likely someone you know that is infected
with
the virus and is not aware of it.
6) The owner of the domain sexyfun.net and the hosting company
has
setup a help page with information about the (W95.Hybris.gen)
virus, links to software that you can use to clean your
computer
if you are infected as well as other misc. information.
7) We did NOT create the virus or know who the person is that
created
the virus. We are NOT affiliated with this person / persons
and the
same applies to our hosting company.
NOTE: As long as you don't run / open / double click on the
attachment
of this email, this virus should not be able to infect you
just
by reading the email.
Here are links to well known companies of anti-virus products
that
will show that what has been said above is true.

additional
information about this Virus.

This is how all Web Sites should be designed. Methodical, easy to navigate,
easy to see where you're going and easy to see where you've been.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm lovely, I quite agree.

I said nothing about the structure of the site. I just said it looks like
Windows. Can't they be a little bit more inspired than to copy the lame
icons
from the Windows Explorer? That's just pathetic...

Well, that's my point...no silly flashing logos and unnecessary bits. It's
just an information web site after all.
The icon simply signifies a folder or container, and apart from changing the
colour or giving it an unnecessary picture you know immediately what
everything is for. I like this simplistic approach on this kind of web site,
but of course it's a matter of opinion and yours differs to mine. I'm sure
we would agree with a lot of things but Windows folders obviously isn't one
of them!

True!
I'd just use plain text and indentation for navigation, instead of multiple
graphics of folders and OnMouseOver actions :-)

Yes, this is quite genuine. I got the same thing about a month ago. My copy
of Sophos dealt with it immediately. Notice the difference in the text of
this one placing the emphasis about information about the virus rather than
the fact you should tell the World about it.
At the end of the day, if you have the latest virus software you should
avoid roughly 99.9% of all viruses, and the other 00.01% you will perhaps
never see. I haven't been seriously affected by a virus for about four years
now.

Hi P2B/LAWP users!
I'm presently running LAWP/2408 MK II on ASUS P2B/ Windows 98/ P II 350/
256 RAM/ 6 gig (prog.) /30 gig Maxtor ( Audio).
Everything is running well but since I whant to use softsynths in the
future, I whant to upgrade my P II 350 to a P III 800.
According to Asus, (www.asus.com/products/techref/chipset/p3cpu.html)
I will have to flash the BIOS (presently 1006) to 1011 or later...fine,
but they say that I need "PCB Revision R1.12 or later."
How do I check the PCB revision?
I checked at boot-up, checked on the ASUS shipping box, checked in the
manual,
checked on the board itself...??? ;(
Thank you for any help...

Don't own the P2B myself but you could try the Asus newsgroup:
alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.asus
(online at:
http://www.deja.com/[ST_rn=fs]/group/alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.asus )
There's also Asus' own forum - 'NetQ', I think, at their own site.

Simply have a look on the surface of the motherboard, it will be clearly
marked with a rev.
Phil
NO...the only sticker on the board is "MIC 26930"
no Rev. number...

I still say it will be there somewhere. If it is a PCB rev then it has to be
marked on the PCB somewhere.

Sometimes I look at the egroups page and there seem to be messages listed
there that I never received ... and sometimes I seem to have received
messages that do not seem to be at egroups. Is this usual? Or am I
imagining things?
Indeed, is there any rhyme or reason to the order in which messages arrive?
Sometimes I seem to get responses before the original question has arrived.
Thanks for any enlightenment.

Thanks. I'll check it out.
Wouldn't explain my extra messages though. Nor would this, I think, explain
the strange order.
E.g. I have just received your response to me directly to my Inbox. My
original plus your response, are both on the egroups site.
However ... I have yet to receive my original message as an egroups
subscriber.
I.e. you seem to have replied to me BEFORE I have actually received my own
message. (How do you do that, by the way!! Neat trick!!!)
I will let you know if and when my original message arrives.
But ... when you get this one is anybody's guess!!!!

Some mail servers are faster than others. I don't know much about it, but
I've been told that some ISP's bundle all their outgoing mails and then send
them off in intervals.

It is happening to several messages. This is the only email account I am
subscribed to.
As another example, your Admin mailing about insults has only just arrived.
But I received Sascha's response, my own response to that, plus Jesse
Widener's all yesterday. That is to say, after I had responded to what
Sascha said it then occurred to me that he had referenced a message of
yours that I had not actually seen. So I went to egroups and there it was!!
This is what set me thinking.
I think it best if I monitor the situation for a couple more days so I can
give you a better report and cite a few more specific instances. It will be
easy to track down what is happening that way. I will also contact you
privately about it because I am quite sure this is already tedious to
others in that I am the only one who seems to be having a problem with this.
Thanks.

Someone said:
>>> DAT tape is currently the best solution for regular, healthy
backups.
Tape backup is always a slightly risky business and is never and has never
been the most reliable form of backup, and DAT is probably the worst there
has been for SCSI tape reliability. It can be OK if you are extremely
careful and don't suffer bad luck the one time you need to rely on it, and
it has improved a lot over the years. If used for workstation backup for
maybe once a fortnight backups as a secondary backup and if the drive is
regularly cleaned when the drive's LED tells you it's time (very often
overlooked with people) the DAT is fairly good and relatively cheap. However
if cost isn't a major issue and you want tape I would use AIT, or if you can
afford it get a small RAID 5 setup and maybe back that up for extra
protection. CD is quite a reasonable backup media. The nice thing is it is
now so cheap to get a good backup routine working with CDs. I can still read
CDs I wrote 4 years ago. If the data was that critical I wouldn't go that
long without another backup anyway.
The trouble is, it is extremely easy however careful you are to find
yourself in a non recoverable situation. No-one is more careful with backups
and data integrity than me, but I've got into some sticky situations. The
most important thing of all is to back up and then imagine loosing
everything. How do you get the data back from tape or media and get back
fully working? What steps can you take to bring yourself back on line? It
may well be fine for you to reload the OS and then restore everything but
there are pitfalls in doing that, and it is time consuming.
I generally use this method:
Two hard disks, each with an image of the other, both images backed up to
servers.
Local work files backed up regularly to tape and to servers.
Servers backed up to tape.
Boot floppy containing system files and Norton recovery tools.
Servers with emergency recovery tools (Veritas Disaster Recovery)
Boot floppy to get me on to server under Dos (Win 98 DOS)
You can never over-backup! Even if I lost both local logical drives on
either workstation, I can boot under Dos to server, copy both image files to
local D, restore C from image file on D, reboot, copy image file of D to C,
restore D from image file on C. The whole process would take about one hour.
I should know I've just done it!
Warning, never select your hard drive under Wavelab as a sampler, it
destroys data on your drive completely!!!
Phil
Hi,
I'd like to install a second monitor. I currently have one 17" 1024*768
monitor at 100Hz. I'd like to know what the best (affordable!!!)
solution is to have two monitors: what videocard should I use??? I dual
head? If so, which one performs well enough to offer 100Hz for BOTH
monitors? Thanks.
On the website of Asus and Matrox, there's no info on what refresh rate
they support for two monitors at the same time. The Asus 7100 looks
interesting, but I really need the 100Hz. for both monitors and I don't
know whether it performs well enough...

Hi Joeri;
I have three servers that use the Matrox G400 dual head.
And these cards like LOGIC and LOGIC likes them.
LOGIC is fabulous with a dual monitor setup.

know whether it performs well enough...
