begin to speculate on where you are going right or wrong.
Hay anyone out there have issues with the OSX Date and time?
I have X on a different drive (10.1) and whenever I boot from that drive it
defaults to Jan 1 1970. ;-/ Everything is then fine when I boot back to
9.2.2.
Cheers,
Matt

Just guessing.
Perhaps your battery is down (I'm assuming it's not a laptop), and
you have a broad band internet connection. You have in Mac OS 9 on
Date & Time Control Panel network time sinchronization on and in MAC
OSX Date & Time Sistem preference - off!
Perhaps?

No I dont think it is that.
I have 2 imacs that do that and the battery's are fine.
10.1.5 for me. Network time server works fine, but local time setting doesnt
work.

You're right Dennis, action speaks louder than words :-)
Here you find a link to a small, but high quality mp3-snippet:
http://www.cone.nl/content/download/example.mp3
I'm interested in your opinions, about:
-how to obtain more presence and 'power'
-while played on lo-fi systems, no distortion
-other tips & hints
Thanks in advance for your time and attention.
EK
> I'm interested in your opinions, about:

Actually it sounds like a pretty good mix to me.
On my hi-fi speakers (Dynaudio BM6As) I feel like I the bass might be
a touch loud and I might like a little more of the percussion. On my
tiny crappo Lo-Fi speakers the percussion balance sounds better right
but the bass line is a little hard to pick out.
One thing you might take note of is that the bass is a pretty pure
sine wavy bass and it tends to get lost on speakers that can't
reproduce it when it is loud enough to actually be kind of blasting
on speakers that can.
NS10s for example roll off on the bottom at 60 hz but a low E on a
bass is 40hz so it is the distortion and overtones that give you a
clue as to what is going on on the bottom. The fundamental does not
even exist on most speakers. The upshoot of this being that if you
are aiming for crappo speakers you may want to use a bass patch with
more overtones in it.
As for sounding more "powerful" I don't think any mastering you do
to
that particular piece is going to make it a whole lot more powerful
because it is kind of lite music and light tones.
Just my opinion and someone else may be able to help you more.
For Matt and stuff for anyone interested,
> Hay anyone out there have issues with the OSX Date and time?
Matt,
I really can't remember for sure...to be quite honest. But, there are
several updates from Apple. I have installed 10.1.2, then 10.1.3, then
10.1.4 and recently 10.1.5. You can get them at:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/
This is the DL you probably need:
Mac OS X Combo Update 10.1.5
system requirements are:
-Mac OS X 10.1, 10.1.1, or 10.1.2
-Security Update 10-19-01 Installed
-Mac OS X 10.1 Installer Update installed
That should resolve any/most issues that you are aware and not aware of.
------------
As for everyone else, check this one out...I just download it, probably
install it later. But, it from Bias...it is called vbox. All I did was
fill out name and email fields and the DL was honored. But it is a Demo.
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/audio/vbox.html
Looked interesting...so check it out. Or let us know the skinny on dis
puppy.
By the way, I am running Reason 2.0 for OSX and it is rock solid. Also,
bought one of those Logitech USB optical mice, with Right click and scroll
wheel. Had to install a driver for OS9, yet it works beautifully for OSX,
as anticipated, with no drivers. No more left hand on control key, the
ultimate in laziness...LOL. Works really well with Reason, IE, Netscape,
SparkMe, etc.
Peace,
Alexis

Based on what I heard with your example, I offer my
My 5 cents worth:
Reduce the low bass level in the mix. A lot. It dominates all
else and it needs to breathe more to let other parts come
thru. A low shelf at around - 6dB, 125 Hz for starters
The loudness of the bass will lower the amount of maximising
you can effectively apply across the whole track so this is
likely to have some effect on the 'power' part of your problem.
A a slow gentle curve to boost in the midrange (a la 2k)
wouldn't hurt for presence either.
Think about leaving a bit more space in your arrangement too.
If you are monitoring on a less than decent system during mixing
It may be worth your time and money getting a spectrum analyzer
to check out your efforts visually.

The ES1 has a nice Theramin preset too. I use it all the time.
Ahhhhh... portishead.

Hi,
Could someone please send me, or post a nice sounding theremin patch for
one
of the built-in soft-synths in Logic 5? I'm assuming the ES M would work
fairly well.
I would really appreciate it.
Ok, sorry I didnt know it was pc only.
I will sample my theremax and if it turns out ok, post the samples some
where.

Hi all
I Just got a couple new hardrives for my Logic PC DAW, and have
technical questions that maybe some of you can answer...
1. When formatting the hard drive, I'm asked what size file clusters
I want.. what is best for a dedicated audio drive? what about the
OS/programs drive?
2. I'm considering employing my 2 new 40 gb drives in a raid stripe
configuration for dedicated audio. Will raid 0 be benificial or
detrimental for audio?
Thanks in advance for any feedback...
Ed
System:
Logic 5.2 w/ various vsti's
P4 2.24 ghz
Gigabyte GA-8IHXP mobo
256 rambus 1066 (will be increased when prices drop..)
Echo Mona
Matrox G550
1xIBM 4Ogb for OS/programs
2x maxtor 40gb for audio

It seems to have settled. (without a net time server). I read something at
the Apple knowledge base where they said just to reset it and it will
eventually work. Now it does ;-/

Hi Ed, you didn't mention the OS so I assume you're formatting FAT32.
I generally use 32K clusters for the audio drives.
The DOS format command looks like this:
FORMAT D: /Z:64
And use 8K clusters for the OS/system drive.
FORMAT D: /Z:16
Been doing it like this for a long time, what options do you have, are you
using formatting software?

I got one of those powermates ... a metal usb knob that turns with a light
that blinks. It works with Logic. I assigned key commands to scroll
left/right and holding down while turning gives me up/down and, hitting
it,gives me a play/pause.

Bollocks. Just because I didn't invent the car doesn't mean I cannot
understand how it works and build one. But it doesn't mean I can build a
car that works as well as the guys who've been building cars for a long
time. This is just about sharing techniques.
I'd like to know the effects processors and routings used for those
extremely wide, enveloping, yet mono compatible vocals that can be found
on every big record today.

Hardly bullocks and hardly a comparison. I doubt anyone who you look up to
engineering wise invented the FX processors used, they just learned the
skills of how to use them by practicing. What you need to do is not find
out other peoples techniques but rather try recreating what you hear them
doing. This will spawn true creativity, much more so than copying. If you
like a certian effect someone did, expiriment with trying to recreate it
because you will come up with something original and probably even better.
This is likely how the person you are trying to emulate did it as well. :-)

This comparison would be valid, if all mixes were the same. However
since all mixes are differently (at least in details) an IMO much
better comparison would be:
Tell someone the secrets you use to master tests in general. Do this
at a given example test. That way others will learn how to manage tests
in general. Of course they'd be stupid if they would apply the answers
to a particular test (mix) to all other tests (mixes).
If you ask me, those that do deserve the result... ;-)))
